Australia, Jessica Mauboy, 1

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to rank and review the 43 songs competing in Eurovision 2018. Next we head down under to Australia to listen to 2015 interval act Jessica Mauboy and her Eurovision comeback “We Got Love”. Were we feeling the love? Read on to find out!

Jessica Mauboy – “We Got Love”

“We Got Love” reviews

Antranig: “We Got Love” has shades of mediocrity — it builds up to be a banger but the chorus falls flat. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel in any way but that’s not always a bad thing because at the heart of it is a good song. Jessica’s brilliant vocals will be the selling point and she will nail it live. This will be the biggest grower once we hear the songs live. I’m very proud of this representing my country and I think Jessica should easily keep Australia’s top-ten record alive. Go get ’em, Jess!

Score: 8/10

Bernardo: A feel-good pop tune from down under! While it isn’t spectacular, “We Got Love” does its job and allows you to focus on what really matters in this act: Jessica Mauboy. I’ll be cautious to say it will work or bomb in Eurovision, because Australia always bring their A-game with the staging. Plus, if it’s paired with an incredible vocalist (Hey, Dami Im!) we can have a GOLD anthem here. For now, it falls in the average category.

Score: 6.5/10

Chris: There’s always a lot of expectation from Australia these days. Perhaps even more so for the “original” (of sorts), Jessica Mauboy. Maybe that’s why it feels like “We Got Love” misses the mark a little. There’s a slight cynical air about it, as if this was just an attempt at writing a “winning” Eurovision song. Therefore, it could be anyone singing this: Jess doesn’t feel like the star she obviously is. No doubt she’ll raise it in the live performance, but the overall package might let her down.

Score: 6/10

Luis: Australia’s entry is a part of “the generics”, a super group of Eurovision 2018 entries also including Azerbaijan, Finland and the UK. These songs meet a certain criteria: they don’t disturb, but they’re not distinct, way below the artist and they try to be anthemic but fail to do so. In the end, Jessica Mauboy’s song is just an average manufactured pop tune which she’ll no doubt elevate on stage. However, we have to judge on the studio version, and based on that, “We Got Love” just doesn’t do her justice.

Score: 5.5/10

Padraig: There’s trying hard and then there’s being a “try hard”. Normally the former, Australia feels like it’s the latter this year. “We Got Love” is all style over substance. The slick production values are undermined by trite lyrics – Jessica’s never struck me as a “love is stronger than fire” kind of woman. And while questionable lyrics are an integral part of many Eurovision greats, Jessica delivers them with such earnestness that it’s hard to get fully on board. She’s singing about empowerment, but the song is too incessantly peppy for one to believe that there was ever any adversity for her to overcome. If “We Got Love” was a cake, it would be a delicious sponge but with no cream or jam in the centre.

Score: 6.5/10

Sebastian: Anthemic beats? Check. Catchy hashtag? Check. A charismatic superstar? Check. “We Got Love” is very Eurovision by-the-numbers. And while this mid-tempo banger might leave some readers feeling a little lacklustre, the bones of a born-for-stage song is well exposed. The potential for this song to do well will lie entirely in what Jess can do on the night.

Score: 7.5/10

In the Wiwi Jury we have 20 jurors but only have room for six reviews. The remaining scores are below:

Angus: 7/10

Anthony: 7.5/10

Bogdan: 7/10

Cinan: 7.5/10

Deban: 7.5/10

Jonathan: 8.5/10

Jordi: 8/10

Jovana: 6.5/10

Kristin: 6.5/10

Renske: 7/10

Robyn: 5.5/10

Ron: 8/10

Steinunn: 5.5/10

William: 8.5/10

We have removed the highest and lowest scores prior to calculating the average. This is to remove outliers and potential bias. We have removed a low of 5.5 and a high of 8.5.

Wiwi Jury verdict: 7.03/10

In itself, the song isn’t bad. I have the impression that it ‘ s a song that Shakira could interpret at the end of Zootopia 2 XD.
But something is missing. This is the kind of song we’re happy to hear, that makes you move for three minutes, but then you forget. The singer is young, friendly, smiling, sunny and cute, but she also misses a little something indefinable to be noticed among all the other young singers, friendly, smiling and cute at the evening of the final.

This is not a masterpiece, but i find the song enjoyable. She performs well on stage ,is charismatic and full with energy. I think this is a decent song that can do really well in the final, like a top 10. It’s a 7/10 for me.

Generic pop song. Really overrated by the bookies. Also a 7 is too high in my opinion. I hope the Jury don’t rank Australia too high like they usually do, because this year they don’t really deserve it. Australia is in my 27th place: 1. Germany (9)| 2. Albania (8.75) 3. Spain (8.5)| 7. Ukraine (7.5)| 11. Italy (7.25)| 12. France (7)| 13. Lithuania (7)| 14. Denmark (7)| 15. FYR Macedonia (7)| 16. Greece (7)| 17. Switzerland (7)| 18. Poland (7)| 20. Romania (6,75)| 21. On paper (the studio version), this is the weakest Australia’s entry to date, though I think the final package will be way better than last year’s (much more experienced performer and probably better staging). The problem here is that Australia is becoming that country that will always send something well produced, but safe. Too safe. They’re playing even safer than Sweden, that at least brings different things on the visual aspect. I wish Australia had a national final, so we could have a better idea if the local audience is on the same page as the broadcaster. After all, Australian… Read more »

Maybe they just know the juries will just push them in the final and in a good spot there and they just wanna catch the easy pray in televoting. Or maybe they just didn’t get it yet! The Big 5 also don’t put much effort but some of them from time to time show same panache! And not one country this year was so indiferrent about their entry, in my opinion.

I believe when a country get good results in a row, there’s a natural inclination on going with the same formula. And the more you start the process knowing exactly what kind of entry works for you, bigger are the chances you’ll play safe to keep the result under control. Since Australia selects their acts internally, probably the same few people are taking the decisions, which also doesn’t help. If they had a national final, the audience could fall in love with something different and dare to pick another kind of entry. On the Big 5 countries’ case, I really… Read more »

Uk, but also France. Fir me it’s controversial to say the least, for others it’s brave song that must win, but for the French it’s very middle of the road as song and message, very safe in their view.

It’s just a meh song, and the fact that none of the reviews is praising it to the high heavens clearly shows this. Had it been, say, Slovenia’s song, there would be zero hype for this.

The voice is there, she’s a phenomenal performer, but the song itself doesn’t meet my expectations. I wouldn’t call it “souless” but somehow she doesn’t match with this kind of song. I see Jessica as a more happy-clappy performer so to me she’s not made for this type of song or simply, “We got love” doesn’t match her personality.

Dami Im seemed more reflexive (not just because of her oriental looks, but helped) and this gave another level of meaning to “Sound of Silence”.

I put this one close to my top 10.

Everybody seems to rave about her live performance but dismiss the song a little because it’s “genereic”. Now, I vividly rember her appearance in 2010 and for me it was pure cringe vocally. I’ll grant you she sounded decent in London just now (with the backing track conveniently louder, but still…) but kind of shaky in the lower ranges in Israel. My trust in her performance ability is absolutely tinged with caution. I would think she needs good backing singers to help her and I hope she gets them either way. ‘cos see…here’s the good news: I know the song… Read more »

I’ve been reading a lot of negativity towards this song and some grumble bum all upset about Australia being in the Eurovision Song Contest…. yeah…. we all get “old man” syndrome and hold on to something they don’t like. But despite that, just something I remember reading in the past. If Australia ever wins Eurovision, they are not allowed to host it. They must select a country to host it. I am not sure how the selection process will be, but it could be like the Olympics host cities I guess. Anyway, I love Jessica Mauboy and she will definitely… Read more »

Jess is a natural performer with on loads of stage charisma. The song just does not match her abilities. It doesn’t seem like much time was spent in the song writing process and close to zero dollars were spent on the video. Clearly the Aussie team are working to a smallish budget. The song is simple and memorable – even after one listen and that has also contributed to it’s ‘generic’ label. I would have preferred more complexity or uniqueness in the music and less repetition in the lyrics. Jess has sung more difficult songs live and really excelled, but… Read more »

I see everybody talking about Poland being generic, but at least that song is enjoyable and puts you in a good mood. You look at Australia, and you could interchange their entry with Azerbaijan, Russia, Malta, or even the United Kingdom. Now, I don’t hate any of these songs per se, but they do have one thing in common: generic EDM empowerment songs sung by women. We Got Love, is slickly produced and has a pretty cool beat to it, and even a pretty decent hook that does get stuck in my head when I listen to it. Jessica also… Read more »

Australia have not really known how to follow Guy and Dami. They still have that quality production but do they really have the singers of the quality (that would be willing to do Eurovision btw) to get them to the next level? I feel Jessica is closer to Isaiah rather than the forementioned two and she attacks this song more with enthusiasm than world-class vocal talent, in my opinion. The song is a bit generic but I don’t think it is as bad as some people make out. I have found myself enjoying every performance that Jessica has put on… Read more »

I enjoy couple of uptempo songs too, but they have to have something original or unique among other songs of the same genre. We Got Love doesn’t. Sure, it’s happy and nice, but it’s basically copied and pasted from hundreds of other songs. But don’t worry, many people seem to like it anyway, so it’s most likely qualifying.

Robyn doesn’t even hide her bias and negativity towards this song. She previews it with – “A delicious sponge cake but with no cream or jam in the centre”

This is deliberate. It immediately gets viewers viewing the song in an unfavourable light before they even consider the reviews.

Artists work hard on their songs. Why not preview with a less ‘harsh’ comment. Criticism and reviews are fine, but don’t launch straight off the bat.

It’s OK. Nothing more. A 7 for this is very extreme because it’s generic and lacklustre. It’s well performed and gets the atmosphere going but compared to other songs in Semi 2, it doesn’t stand out or appeal to me. It’s just boring and not as good as Jessica’s other stuff. I’d give it a 5, maybe a 6 if I was generous.

People need to realise Eurovision is a PACKAGE PERFORMANCE. It comes down to how the song is performed LIVE ON THE NIGHT combined WITH THE STAGING. (ofc when I say live on the night, I mean both jury and final shows.. cough cough Australia 2016) The fact is, I see this song doing quite well. 1. People need to learn generic is not bad. This song fulfils its purpose. It gets the crowd going and dancing, and it conveys its message across beautifully. 2. Jessica’s vocals are amazing, some of the best in this competition this year. I agree about the package performance. I always count the performance AND the song. Yes the performance can be good, but if the song is lacklustre, then it’s lacklustre. Generic doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad, there are really bad ones and some are just meh. This one is the latter for me. The song doesn’t make me want to dance and jump around, ofc I have my personal preferences on which songs REALLY makes me to dance. Late to the game, but agree that the comment is laden with anti-Australian sentiment. Implying that the song doesn’t have the same impact on the other side of the world when it’s a classic Eurovision pop number and is currently placed 3rd in the betting odds? Sure. I’m not a massive fan of Jessica Mauboy, and would much prefer to see some lesser known Australian talent there (like Dami Im). Someone like Karise Eden or Celia Pavey would be fantastic. But as of 2018, the public has no vote. Perhaps this will change as our position at Eurovision is cemented,… Read more »

Apart from Loreen and some others the best song doesn’t usually win eurovision. It just comes down to the whole package and how it translates live. There is no denying that Jessica is a fantastic live performer and because the song has received fairly positive feedback since its release and even more after her live performance debut of the song I see it doing much better than last year. Europe are not ready to let Australia win but I think they will come close again this year. This time a deserved spot.

@EugeneESCUK But do remember that betting odds do NOT reflect the song quality, and are instead an indication of likelihood of winning, so it is not necessarily that this is the 5th best song, but rather that this is very likely to win based on various other factors such as live performances, running order, previous ranking history (i.e. placing in top 10 in three consecutive years); the fact that the staging is being designed by SJB etc. All that aside, yes, I do agree with you that Australia is overrated this year, as it was especially last year – placing… Read more »

This song is highly overrated. For me it’s the most generic song of this year. Everytime I hear it, I forget about it. It is not awful, but completely irrelvant. It might have some impact on the show if the staging is right and her vocals ok. But even with a lot of fireworks, like Denmark last year, it does not overcome its irrelvance. 5/10

But the song this year is bad. It shouldn’t be scoring or rating as high as it is. We have seen the exact same song numerous times over the years by numerous different countries and they certainly would not see the Top 10. Definitely the right hand side of the scoreboard.

The song I compare this most with is X My Heart by Azerbaijan’s Aisel, for being catchy, well-produced yet generic pop songs. However, I think this should be rated higher than X My Heart, because I think this song has an overall better production and has an anthemic edge whilst also having lyrics that make more sense. In contrast, X My Heart does not fit Aisel, a jazz singer, at all and in my opinion falls short with its production, despite the revamp. Although I think both have been overrated by the Wiwi jury, but that’s probably for its pleasant… Read more »

Generic empowerment-pop. So cookie-cutter and by-the-numbers safe it’s almost offensive. She has a very, very good voice, she’s vocally amazing and she nails it live, but it’s such a shame that the song is so bad. :-/ The problem I have with all of Australian songs is that they sound very American. This is a typical USA sound, while the EU countries even if they sound modern like Sweden or Slovenia, still sound European, if you know what i mean. Is it just me?

I love the singer, but the song is too repetitive and is lacking an obvious key change. Every time I play this one on the piano, I can’t resist adding a whole tone key change for the Reprise towards the end, from G major to A major. It just makes so much sense! Come on Australia, you know you want to do the Key Change! I’m sure Jessica can handle it. 🙂

Once as a guest is ok. But three times guest is too much. They bring nothing special to the contest. China, Mexico or Cameroon would be fun once as a guest instead of always Australia. Australia, why don’t you organise your own Oceania Chanson Contest with New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, Fidji, Tahiti, Nouvelle Calédonie. You would have a lot of fun and more chances to win. Eurovision started small with only six countries and continually grew.

This could be the Azerbidjan of 2011. Definitely not the best entry but with no clear song to win the both jury and televote this could sneak to the top of the board.
I wonder what a Baptist staging is going to look like when she does not have all the modern gimmicks to her disposal….

Definitely more of a grower than a show-er. Studio version is a bit of a let down, was hoping for an absolute banger, which Jess is totally capable of. Jesus I can’t dislike a song without being attacked can I? You guys are doing no favours for making me like it.
You’re a fan that’s great! (Gives round of applause) I’m not, and that’s my opinion. I can’t make myself like something I don’t.
If you’s don’t like my comments, ignore them. But I’ll continue to post my opinions here. It just looks sad watching all the “I love Australia’s ESC entry” sheep jumping to its defence….it looks ridiculous. You like it fine, I don’t like it, that’s fine too and that’s my choice.

I don’t like the australian entry either, Darren. You’re not alone. And I also think that this song would be judged differently if it would compete for another country but Australia (or Sweden). It would get to the finals. It would get points. But it wouldn’t get as much positive feedback as it does now. ImhO

If it was from Montenegro or Swittzerland, say, it would be last in odds and definitely NQ. I don’t understand why this love for Australia? They haven’t proved anything in these 4 years. Waste of time and space from other competitors.

Pretty sure Switzerland and even Ireland have sent this song in the past and they have not even qualified.
Russia sends this song every single year and people complain how it’s the typical “love, love, peace, peace” anthem every year from them.

Russia, of which I’m not a fan, never voted for them, puts some effort some years, last 2 were pretty bad . At least they are in Europe, they don’t have to justify anything.

Yeah right! It’s your personal taste to Australia’s entries but there are people who like their entries just like me. Dami Im will always be my 2016 winner for sure and they did deliver in 2015 and 2016.

I say it’s too high, someone else says it’s too low. Guess you’s should have just given it an average score. Take the song for what it actually is….average.

That’s why the score is an average 7.

7 is definitely not average. “Average” would be putting it somewhere around Russia and Ireland in the Wiwi Jury. 5 points.

I say the score is fair. Not everyone likes it but it has of love just like it’s title. I’m pretty sure it will get better reviews after her live performance. Besides Isaiah they always nail it live. It is my favourite for sure

I agree. She is a good performer and singer, but this song is CRAP. Generic, repetitive and overrated bland pop. I prefer previous entries from Australia, like Dami In and Guy Sebastian. Those deserved top 5.

Darren is a hater! He’s comments below show that. So happy he is attacked. Hopefully it continues forever. The purpose is not to change his mind but annoy the heck out of him. Lol

That’s quite sad @Revenge if that’s your goal. But anyway, you’re not even annoying “the heck” out of me. I’m sitting here laughing at your complete lack of awareness.
I’m not even a hater either, just have a different opinion regarding a song. If having a different opinion means one is a hater…well fine, attack me. It only shows your own ignorance and arrogance x

I really like the song after her live performances. However, I really think they should go with different composers and some singers outside of Sony next time ‘cuz Australia has so many talents from different genres. This type of song can do well but will never win, I must say. Too obvious and unoriginal. A national selection will be a really good idea.

That’s my main problem with Australia as well. Such a great music scene, but such a lack of musical diversity in their Eurovision choices so far (in Junior Eurovision it’s the same thing by the way).

Australia is a sure qualifier already because they are friends with EBU

Jess is a powerful singer, this song feels anthemic (bit similar to Pink’s what about us i think)

In Nashville? That pretentious American accent is a total turn off. He can jump in the ocean.
