Yesterday, Eurovision 2017 winner Salvador Sobral, did not mince his words when asked about his thoughts on Netta‘s song “Toy” and set the fandom ablaze with his blunt comments. Among the many thousands of reactions all over the social media to Salvador’s opinion that the Israeli song was “horrible” came Netta’s comment, in the shape of a Twitter reply late last night.

Israeli singer Netta — who is currently the third favourite to win Eurovision 2018 with “Toy” — replied to wiwibloggs’ tweet with a simple but powerful message.

The loop artist wrote that she was “Sending only love to Salvador, and to all artists of all genres”. The tweet extended an olive branch to the Portuguese singer and was a sign that she did not take his harsh words to heart.

Moreover, the same message is a veiled comment on the fact that music comes in different forms and that all artists are worthy of respect for their artistry. Also interestingly, Netta chose to reply with a photo of her and the current odds-on favourite to win the contest, Eleni Foureira from Cyprus, whose song “Fuego” is bringing the fireworks to Portugal despite Salvador Sobral’s hope that his win would put an end to what he called “fast food, disposable music”.

Fans react to Salvador Sobral’s comments about Netta’s song

Netta’s “only love” reaction was a far cry from the comments of many Eurovision fans, who opinion-shamed Salvador Sobral for his criticism of “Toy”. Many of our readers in particular found the Portuguese singer’s words unacceptable for a Eurovision winner. For instance, wiwibloggs reader jPod says, “I think it’s time Salvador got off his high horse and showed some respect to those who worked really hard to be in this contest. Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but he has come off as rude and disrespectful.”

Some however defended Salvador Sobral for expressing his blunt opinion about a song that did not match his musical taste. “Salvador only replied to a provocative question that was already planned knowing he would give a very harsh but honest opinion on it. We all know that these songs like Toy and Fuego are the type of music he despises the most. Why on earth would be put a smile on his face and praise them knowing this is not music to his ears,” wiwibloggs reader Charles said.

Jacques Houdek: “Shame on you, Salvador Sobral!”

But it was not just Eurovision fans who reacted strongly to Salvador Sobral’s comments. Last year’s Croatian entrant Jacques Houdek was quick to criticise and even attack the Eurovision winner openly, in a lengthy post on Facebook.

Just like Salvador Sobral, Jacques Houdek did not mince his words. While defending Netta, he admonished Salvador for not being a gentleman, going as far as to call him “rude” “a poser”, “fake”, “a very small person”, and demanding an apology in the name of the Eurovision contestants.

The Croatian singer also attacked Salvador Sobral for participating in the contest despite being sick and for not attending last year’s rehearsals. “You may have tricked the entire Europe, but you did not fool me,” he added, highlighting the fact that last year’s winner was a very divisive figure in the contest not just among Eurovision fans, but also among the artists themselves.

There is no suggestion that Salvador’s medical condition was exaggerated for Eurovision. Earlier this year, Salvador successfully underwent a life-saving heart transplant operation and is happily recovering.

What do you think about Netta’s reply? And what do you make of Jacques Houdek’s angry reaction to Salvador Sobral’s comments? Sound off in the comment section below!

He wanted to get rid of the burden of being a winner of ESC, and he’s the winner with most scoring points. So i’d say he’s fine.

Actually, no, he didn’t mention any other countries, if by that you mean commenting their 2018 entry on ESC. He specifically said he only listened to the songs of Portugal and Israel (and this, only because Youtube suggested it to him — and, from his reaction, I’d say he didn’t listen for more than a few seconds).

OK, so now, for the first time, I watched Netta’s official video. Much better than the live performance (which I still find quite bad). It’s still that WTF entry, but after a while you get in to in.

Did that Croatian singer really said that ?
That someone who received a heart transplant was faking his health condition ?
And that the exception (for missing first rehearsals) should not have been awarded ?
Come on…
Find him also a new heart. He needs it.

No, he actually didnt. He said it was terrible that Sobral was sick (theres no arguing about that) but he added that if you have such a serious health condition (as Sobral did) you simply don`t undertake such a challenging project as the ESC.

He implied that he was faking, him being humble and the fact that he had an illness. He literally said he wasnt what people thought sobral was. So yes, he kind of said he was faking, in a way. And the fact that he thought he shouldnt compete, despite KNOWING NOTHING about his health condition. says it all. he’s a sore loser who got butthurt by his speech.

It’s not about Toy being bad or good. It was just the random song that came up on Salvador’s autoplay. It could’ve been any other ESC song, and if he is right saying that ‘nothing changed’ then most of them would fall under ‘horrible/fast food/fluffy pop’ category.
So for the sake of argument, replace Israel with Cyprus, Ireland, or your favorite this year.

Common guys , Neta is a joke . A good comedian , a funny girl but not a classic Eurovision artist. In fact she has nothing to do with the Eurovision Contest ‘s singers at all.
If you want her change Eurovision into a Newrovision. Than bring all the crazy to sing for you.

Salvador is acting like a precocious child. He knows very well what Eurovision is like. He also complained about becoming a celebrity after his win.
He had a nice enchanting song but it was just an act. He isn’t very nice inside but someone insecure who feels the need to put down other hardworking artists.
In the end Salvador will fade into obscurity possibly spending the rest of his life cashing in on his win touring tiny little jazz festivals whereas many artists whom he despises will achieve success he can only dream of.

It’s not. It’s actually the opposite. Nettas music doesnt represent anything new, she’s copying what’s done in Asia, specially k-pop. She said so herself. Netta was cocky, saying that she represents 2018. She certainly dont represent me or my view on 2018.

Sobral is fresh, young, different. He mixes a lot of different genres like jazz, classic music…but it’s way too complex for a fast food brain like yours to understand.

Not showing up for rehearsals send out a patronizing message to other contestants and fans. His song was not even good in my opinion. The most disrespectful thing a performer can do is screw his/her performance. If he had missed the rehearsals and then messed up his live act, then you could say he shouldn’t have missed the rehearsals. But his performance was spot on (literally a winning performance) even without the first few rehearsals, so clearly missing them was nothing important.

So he underwent a hearth transplant procedure this year, a last line of treatment for someone who has heart disease, perhaps one of the most risky surgeries ever designed to save the life of someone, if that is not enough to convince you that he was not in shape for doing 2 rehearsals for more than 2 hours, then you and Jacques are talking nonsense. For me our Netta already won. I love many songs in the competition including Cyprus, Hungary, Denmark, France, Lithuania, Italy, Germany Albania to mention a few and they all could be great winners. Netta did what no artist did. Few months ago no one in Israel knew who she was and now hundreds of millions know and love her. With over 45,000,000 views to her video she inspired millions of heavy girls to be and love who they are and for that only she is my winner no matter who will actually wins. I adore you Netta!

Yes, Salvador did not miss ALL rehearsals, he missed SOME rehearsals (the earlier ones). In fact, his grand final dress rehearsal is, and probably will be for decades if not for ever, the best rehearsal in the history of ESC: for other artists, rehearsals are just a means (practice) to an end (not failing during the real deal, the live show); Salvador made his rehearsal an art piece of its own. This is not just “anyone” – this is the winner of Eurovision who will be handing the award on Saturday. He should have refused to comment until after the competition. His opinion matters and he should have be mindful of that.

He should not criticize any song in that manner… has nothing to do with Israel… it has to do with respecting the institution which gave you a prize

There is nothing wrong in criticizing and sharing opinions….
It gets wrong, when you win by votes from Eurovision lovers, and then you slap them by saying that what they like in this contest is trash. That’s wrong attitude. Not criticizing. The attitude! Don’t you all get it?!

A bad behaved, sneaky and an arrogant creature is you, Salvador Sobral. I still remember what you did last year.
Having a sick heart why did you participate in the Eurovision last year? You took advantage of your healt conditionls. It was obvious, I immediately felt that you are not honest and humble.
Bulgaria had to win, not a snob like you.

Salvador might have been rude for saying his opinion about 1 song,
but what you said right now is 100 times worse.
You just attacked his health. Salvador had heart transplant, for god sake, he could have died. I am sure he would have rather had a healthy heart than win eurovision.

One day when you get ill, maybe you will understand and regret what you just said.

He participated in Eurovision because he won the national selection — a winning he never thought it would happen in the first place. He took advantage of his health?! When people started talking about his health issues, they downplayed it saying he was just recovering from a hernia surgery! He won because he blew fresh air in the competition, not being one of the handful of ESC stereotypes . And you say he shouldn’t have won because he is a snob? Is ESC a singing competition or a humility competition? Are they supposed to sing or audition to become Franciscan… Read more »

Jacques never said his disease is fake…he said that the way he acted, especially while performing is fake cause he thinks that he tried to appear nice and lovable but is not…

What do you mean, “the way he acted, especially while performing is fake”?!
Of course it is fake: that’s called performance; he’s embodying a man desperately in love.
That’s what singers (and actors) are supposed to do: make their performances believable. (Or do you think Ralph Fiennes was really a Nazi death camp commandant?…)

I’m sure the heart condition is real but I don’t think it’s what actually prevented him doing all the rehearsals and press events. He sees himself as above all that.
Either Toy or Fuego would be very worth winners.

Question is would he do the honourable thing and hand them the trophy if they did?

You’re clearly not a doctor… or a person that reads a lot. His heart condition caused severe fluid retention, making his belly swell, which increases the heart insufficiency, which increases fluid retention, and so on… (If, knowing that, you watch his videos from last year, you’ll see in many of them his belly protrudes immensely; he tried to disguise that with oversized jackets.) The way to control and reduce fluid retention is, from time to time, to plug him to a machine that helps the failing heart. That’s why he missed the first week of rehearsals: to stay as fit… Read more »

I dont know why people get mad over that , the thing is , winners can do whatever they want and say whatever they please , you may not like it , you may be mad about it , but thats how it goes. The fact is that you all voted for him and gaved him that power , you really loved him “beyond his bones ” so deal with it 🙂
