Cyprus Israel Ireland Eurovision 2018

Slow and steady wins the race. And no other Eurovision 2018 act has risen up the odds quite as slowly and steadily as Ireland.

Before Tuesday’s first semi-final, Ryan O’Shaughnessy and “Together” weren’t even expected to qualify. But now, after breaking into the bookies’ top ten following semi-final two, Ireland now sits at three in the overall odds table.

Ryan’s odds have been slashed by many bookmakers. Marathon Bet has reduced his chances of winning from 70/1 to 8/1.

Is the hype real? It’s worth remembering that most of the bookmakers listed by Oddschecker.com are based in either Ireland or the UK. Therefore, much of their odds could be driven by over eager local punters. However, at the same time, the British representative SuRie languishes at 23rd in the odds.

Another act on the move is Italy. They were virtually crowned victors of Eurovision 2017 before their arrival in Kyiv, only to miss out on the top five. This year the buzz has been much more low-key. But following last night’s jury show, Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro have risen from 11th to sixth.

However, in order for some to rise others must fall. Lithuania tumbles from fourth to seventh, while Norway’s slide continues. Alexander Rybak now sits at tenth after previously being as high as second.

Eleni Foureira from Cyprus retains the lead she established during rehearsals. How low her odds can go is anyone’s guess as we head into the Grand Final. After dipping slightly throughout the past two weeks, Israel’s Netta sits at two.

Balkan neighbours Serbia and Slovenia look like potential last place contenders. Lea Sirk and Sanja Ilic & Balkanika are both 750/1 at Boyle Sports.

We can expect odds to shift further as commentators react to tonight’s live grand final.

Impossible to predict anything this year. We just can share our hopes. I would be happy if the winner is a song with minimum of soul, depth and meaning, and not pure commercial crap just here to grab easy votes, that’s my only concern! So -apart from my own country- I’m gonna be with Italy, Albania, Germany, Bulgaria and Lithuania. With all my respect for countries who decided to sing in their own language, wich is a +++ for me. Kisses from Paris, France! Have a nice evening guys (and girls)!

or perhaps promise to buy votes from each other.. thats hows corrupt the eastern block countries are in all of this.
the song contest was so much better in the 1990s without these states coming into it with their negative draconian suppressed views, lack of freedom and lack of civil rights.

Not that it’s important but I have nothing better to do before our party starts: what will your reaction be like when Greece gives its 12 points to Cyprus? The usual booing or a ‘hooray’ this time? 😀

Cyprus song has only a nice show and a sexy singer but she doesn’t perform this song good not the greatest voice of the contest. I like Israel ,and if we vote for the song and not appearance then Cyprus’s best position should be 3rd or 4rd not better. Also Cyprus will be voted by Greece and maybe Albany too as always and it will have a boost. I think cyprious singer is nice but on this song she couldn’t show her voice skills and it was worse than the original/prerecorded song. Anyway if you want to vote for show… Read more »

Eugene – the complete wow package depends on the competing songs – you need the comparison to stand out – but with a lot of good songs this is not really possible.
To me it is kind of wow that a post-metal band has won over so many people with their performance – and especially also people that usually don’t like thie genre. I think Hungary will do very well with the televotes and end up top 10 at least.

Good luck to all participants this evening, it’s feels like a very strange ESC with no Russia, Greece, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Romania – have we finally seen an end to diaspora voting? It looks like Cyprus year but I’ll be rooting for Albania, Italy and Portugal

2018 became the biggest chance for Cyprus to win a contest in which small countries have little to say in the last few years. I’ll vote for Eleni and hope it makes Nicosia 2019 possible. The country deserves it.

It will be very funny if Ireland wins (thanks to draw in final and before in semi, made by Bjorkam and Jon Ola) . EBU allow masive CGI for Norway, good draw for Sweden in semi and final . Bjorkam said and we read that before he quite Eurovision want to see Sweden break Ireland record of 7 th wins in Eurovision. Maybe he made mistake, and fix with draw not 7 th vicotry for Sweden but fix 8 th victory for Ireland.

The big 5 entries Uk, Germany, France running order 9/11/13 have been decided before even the SFs started. All is about money. Just put spain @2 so it ain’t not so suspicious.
The favorites who unfortunatly draw 1st half were doomedd since the beginning.

Wrong reply sorry, it was for Jonas message above.

From the runingorder I would say that Ukraine was 3 or 4 in secondsemi. And if I understand the pattern right. Sweden, Moldova or Hungary was between 1-4 in their Semi. But Norway start as 7th so Norway should NOTbe top 4 in the semi.

TOP 4 SEMI 2
Ukraine, Sweden, Hungary, Moldavia

So the odds sholuld change in my opinion. Hungary and Moldova should have a better position than Norway.

Pure guessing. Am I totaly wrong?

Could be the later draw. Germany is in the first part where there are two similar ballads already. Ireland being late between up tempo songs. Plus Germany is big 5 so harder to win.
And then of course rehersals could be a factor. According to press Ryan did an amazing job.

better staging by ireland possibly? It’s a song that people are talking about? It qualified from a strong semi final, beating some strong eurovision big guns?

I personally prefer the irish song over germany, but today bbc radio 2 played “you let me walk alone” and given a very nice introduction by the dj, Graham Norton. During the song, I almost cried. The introduction and the lyrics hit me on a personal level.
Best of luck to both songs.

I loved the studio version of Greece. I had it tipped as a potential winning song. But then after stage version, it slipped due to bad staging. . This was a powerful song and needed to wow the audience. Something that a solo person on stage with a blue hand could not do. Better luck next year.

bbc radio 2 played the cyprus song today and it felt like a radio hit. The sun was shining and this feel good song that we could all sing along to

As much as i would love it i dont think ireland will do it…. i reckon its a top 10 finish though and hey who would have thought that starting out? The bookies odds are definately not a result of irish punters…. these odds are across the board with bookies right across Europe and while there is hype around the irish song now, the irish public never cared enough about eurovision to start hype! Plus the stat revealed yesterday that 34% of all bets to win were placed on Ireland yesterday makes me think he will have a very strong… Read more »

I think Eleni’s voice is even weaker. At least Ryan mostly hits his notes. The music and her backup singers drown Eleni’s voice. Her dancing makes up for her lack of voice though. We’ll see if juries play into her act.

To be fair, Ryan’s vocals are not weak. In fact I think he does nail them. Live sounds almost the exact same as the studio version. Falsetto is also a hard vocal to hit.

Actually is not a new single, but the ghost track of his latest album released a year ago. He just made a video using images from his live tour (some of them recorded by fans) as a way to thank the support of the 140,000 fans who attended his Magellano Tour. It´s a kind of a video-selfie of his live tour. This year even if he is still working in his new album, he will be making a mini-tour in some historic locations throughout Italy.

I’m genuinely nervous about getting involved in The momentum that’s built up, and is actually continuing to build behind Ireland. I want to run with it, but I don’t know.
This voting will be so tight, so exciting and so so messy.
I don’t think Israel deserve to win. The song is great but the performance really definitely isn’t. It’s very awkward watching Netta spend the first few seconds of the song making chicken noises as she records her voice for that machine thing she has.
Prediction:
1. Cyprus
2. Ireland/France with other country takin get 3rd.

She isn’T using a vocal looper because it wasn’t allowed. They are doing it a-capella at the beginning. The thing infront of her is a visual kind of looper she – have you seen the “HEY”? So no voice recorded.

It’s still awkward watching her do it anyway. The staging is too 2008 too. I think it’s safe to say that Israel isn’t going to win. I predict 4-8 I need the final.
But again, this year has no clear favourite so who knows?

It’s a bit silly to ban Netta’s looper but allow Benjamin’s vocoder. Yes, the first is a recording, but it uses live vocals. I summon the vocoder is live, not a recording, but it’s practically autotune. Disclaimer: I’m not Cher so I don ‘t know everything about vocoders.
