After last night’s roller coaster of results, the Netherlands’ Waylon has reacted to his 18th place finish and Netta’s win. The country singer recalls the incredibly tense voting sequence, in which the juries and the televoters did not agree with each other at all, among many other surprises. He said:

“I had hoped we would go top 10, but the results… Wow! That went weird… You could tell from the noise in the hall as well. Everyone was like: what is happening here? The right side of the scoreboard was suddenly at the left side. It was a very surprising evening. (…) The hall was wild during the night. Then something crazy happened with the United Kingdom. (…) It was heavy, but you have always got some idiots who want attention… it’s part of it all.”

Waylon was not upset about his result.

“I am currently feeling very proud of the thing we did. That we have got to do something in which we all believe fiercely. (…) There is definitely no disappointment. Of course you want to be first: that’s the most fun thing for the party it is, because you want to take it to the Netherlands after 43 years… I think you have to do it by stepping up and we’ve done that. (…)  I thought we didn’t deserve this place… but it’s the place we’ve got… that’s okay.”

Waylon told journalists that he would love to represent the Netherlands for a third time. Maybe Waylon 2022 then? However, he had the following advice for the next Dutch participant:

“Keep doing your thing. We are a bunch of stubborn Hollanders and we have to give the example in tolerance, in loving each other and in doing something what you stand for. I think the Netherlands is such a country… I hope the Netherlands is such a country. At least, we did that and I am proud of that.”

He was obviously referencing his own performance. He included a group of four krump dancers, which proved to bewildly controversial. Waylon tried to explain that the dancers represented the “outlaw of dance” while standing firm on his decisions.

Waylon was not that keen on Israel winning. He sees Netta as an embodiment of the “freak show” stigma that’s often attached to Eurovision. He said:

“Israel is the rightful winner if we talk about what we are always talking about: the circus and the craziness. But what I just said, it will not add up to much change in [that type of] Eurovision. And that’s what I think is sad. Something should change one time. Last time, it was a woman with a beard, now it’s a chicken.”

In a way, he agrees with last year’s winner Salvador Sobral. Earlier this week he said that he hoped Israel would not win for the sake of music. Speaking to wiwibloggs yesterday, Salvador said: “It’s going to be a bit strange if I have to give the trophy to Israel.”

Holland was very efficient helping the naztis with exporting the Jews
Now holland is back with parody and criticizing Israel who tried to stay alive among millions of Arabs who wants its destruction and with the Euro who wants to stay with Iran’s plans
Shame on you Holland!!

So tiring those guys like Waylon and Sobral deciding for everyone else what good music is. In various ways, Eurovision has always been about more than just music. It has always been about bringing people and nations together in an extraordinary and wonderful evening full with music, fun and all kinds of acts on and off stage and along the long road towards the grand finale. The entry which gets most points from the juries and televotes combined is always the rightful winner. Participants who don’t agree with that and criticize their fellow participants in this low manner may have… Read more »

HEY!! Can we have Kensington now? If there is ever going to be redemption for rock, they will surely bring it!

Europe, witness the tolerance. Both on this board and from the mouths of contestants.

Waylon is casting shame upon the Netherlands. He was the only clown this year, dressed in leopard and playing a cowboy (which looked more like a parody than a real act), and yet he dares to criticize others about things that he himself did. Some people are just hypocrites and they don’t even realize it. Netherlands regrets his participation and we will never make the same mistake again.

Marc

Sending him to Lisbon was a terrible mistake but it happened and we cannot undo it now. However, if our PBS wants to impress with rock again, then it should do it professionally and seriously like Albania, and not to select another fake cowboy dressed in leopard-print pattern singing hillbilly boogie.

That’s what we get when AVROTROS selects entries internally. 18th place was too high for him!

Have a real issue with all these people like Waylon and Salvador moaning about circus acts and fast food music for godsake lads you entered the Eurovision song contest. Seriously what did they bloody expect avant garde music and world class compositions. If they feel it’s beneath them then why enter in the first place .

What song should win, that PIECE OF SH*T he sang at stage? Waylon, you’re just jealous.

I totally agree with him, the truth is that in the last 5 editions, 4 winners didn’t win for their music. In 2014 it was the woman with the beard that told her story that touched so many people from a certain category, in 2016 it was the perfect moment to sing about a Russian-Ukrainian war, in 2017 we had a social case, in 2018 we had a social message. Waylon is one of the singers who came there with pure music, which is not the secret nowadays. If we continue like this, in some winners we could see speeches,… Read more »

so what you are saying in regards on 2018 is that if he were to change the lyrics of his song to a social message (#meetoo or any other hot topic) he could have won?? let me answer that – Hell to the NO(!!) Netta did not win because of the social message Netta won because she is a full package – just to emphasize Eleni from Cyprus did not bring a social message *at all* and got to the honorable second place – Netta brought charisma, sass, life, loads of talent, a big voice, musical inspiration these are the… Read more »

@ Gaston: I agree with what you said about Netta. I found her song and her performance so lively, smart and funny. And the lady CAN sing live. What a powerful voice! And sadly, people say negative and bad things about her appearance as a person. However, I disagree about Eleni who represented Cyprus. She cannot be on stage without playback and backing singers singing louder than her. In my opinion, that’s not good when you participate in a Song Contest (it’s not a Dance Contest. But I guess people got blinded by her sexy look, fires, lights etc. (Don’t… Read more »

I don’t deny Netta’s qualities, I’ve said that, she has a great voice. But it was simply not the reason she won. The best female artist from Lisbon still remains, by far, Elina Nechayeva, who didn’t fight to win. About the show, I’ve seen much more inspired shows than Netta’s that didn’t impress. No, Netta won for the subject she was singing about, that’s the reason I can’t appreciate her win. I don’t deny the fact that she’s a good artist, but I know she didn’t win for that.

AurelianTamisan
Guest

There were a lot with full package. Denmark was killed by the juries, they were perfect. No, he wouldn’t have won by bringing a message, Netta’s message was the one that sold the best, no one would have won after she entered this song. And it’s the message that works so well nowadays, we’ve seen that with other ocassions. The winning success for next year? Just bring someone that sings about slavery, it is on top as well. Sorry, I don’t believe in coincidences, the same song with other lyrics wouldn’t have got top 10.

It’s fine. Good write up from Wiwi. One thing I do like to point out is Waylon was really respectful in his answers. It doesn’t translate at all in written words. So it’s slightly out of context in that regard as well as near literal translation to English.

Waylon and his team should be proud. It takes time for people to realise what it was about. I believe it was too forceful to get the point across.

Congrats to Netta and Israel. Take good care of her. She’ll need it and I’m not talking about just security.

Amy Kelly

He should have been called out on his comment. Totally rude. Same with Salvador. I don’t know why Wiwi folks put up with artists being rude to each other.

Can you stop hating seed once in the direction of Waylon? Now we know that you do not like him. You have made your point now, I thought so. Moreover, the Dutch Renske must be ashamed to publish something about a record of her own country. And if it was the truth now ok. But it is not even that. Waylon has clearly said that Netta has rightly won. I thought the underlying idea behind the Song Festival is All Aboard ?? Well, at Wiwibloggs I notice very little of that. This testifies once again to a lot of unprofessionality.… Read more »

Yes. You can also see the same guy being rude at the winner press conference . At the start of the conference while seated he asked Pedro Granger one of the Portuguese hosts to get out of the way, since he was in front of the delegation. To which Pedro replied “We have to be here”.

Eurovision has changed. Not because “Toy”, because people thinks their only taste in music is whats important. People have forgot what Eurovision stands for. The hate Netta’s getting right now with comments like “fat jew” is NOT what Eurovision stands for. It’s a shame to see what a contest about love, about being together no matter who you are and what you do become now to this Hate festival. Sad.

But what is Eurovision about? Cause I have the impression it is not a music festival anymore, it is a political speech festival. Netta is a great artist, but she didn’t win for that, she won singing about ‘women’s power’, a message that is totally dated nowadays. If she would have sang a normal song with a general message, no hate for her, but it was not her who won, it was the strategy and a message well thought. Same with Italy, we all know that their top place wasn’t win by their music, the difference was that the juries… Read more »

I completely agree. I’ve danced, sang and clapped along Israel song this year it is a really fun song, but I would never vote it as the best song this year. Fun can also win Eurovision of course, but for that the song should have some quality. the song of Israel is just a girl calling boys stupid and making chicken sounds, and I don’t see that as a quality fun song. If people wanted to go with fun upbeat songs Cyprus and Sweden would have been better choices.

Andy

Hypocrisy! You know the song, you sing it, you dance to it but its not worthy! You have issues man

TACV
Guest

No it’s not. One thing is to enjoy a song for what it is (crazy, ridiculous, silly fun song), other thing is to classify it as the better song on the contest. I enjoy TOY song in the context of eurovision crazy circus party, but i would never consider it to be a quality song deserving of the title of the best song in 2018 eurovision. People should realize there is a big distinction between the two.

Another fake news? How long will you continue to spread hatred in the Eurovision community, using purposely selected excerpts from interviews and distort translation? What makes me sad is that it was done by a Dutch! Twice in less than a week. Shame on you, Wiwibloggs. People, please, take the original interview and use Google for translating: you will see the difference. (I also checked with some Dutch in a forum that I am part of: they confirmed that the interview is also being used out of context)

And what was the preformance of the 4 dancers around him if not a circus in its glory? At least Israel gave an original song which is rooted in the Israeli multy cultural rhythms. I’m Dutch and totally agree! HIS performance was a circus anyway, and a bad one. The only reason he came second with the common linnets was because of Ilse the Lange. Her positivity and quality outshined Waylons sourness and arrogance.

Eurovision always claims to be one big and accepting family but that all ends in the moment the winner is chosen. I don’t exclude myself from the complaining behaviour as I didn’t like Jamala and Salvador, but Music has so many variations. Maybe we should just accept that one year people want the deep and meaningful stuff that goes right to the heart while they just want fun and fireworks the next. The world is cruel enough, let us not destroy Eurovision as well…

Calm down, he’s an amazing musician singing an incredible music. And it is frustrating when a great singer is beaten by an aggressive woman that is not singing good music, is transmitting a social message that is suitting so well nowadays, nowadays when the Oscars and the Nobels are given for the same things. As a man I am feeling ashamed for who won. WTF, in a century when the women are having exactly the same rights as men do, she wins it for crying about women’s oppressions.
