France, Jean-Karl Lucas, 3

France will have to wait at least another year before it brings the glass microphone back to Paris. Despite conquering Lisbon’s Altice Arena, Madame Monsieur and their electro-pop melody “Mercy” ended in 13th place during the grand final with only 173 points.

However, French Eurovision hype is growing stronger and stronger every year. On Saturday, the show gathered 5.2 million viewers — the country’s best ratings since 2009, when it fielded superstar Patricia Kaas.

France 2 confirms Destination Eurovision 2019

Speaking to daily newspaper Le Parisien on Monday, Delphine Ernotte, chairwoman of France Télévisions, gave us some good news. Destination Eurovision will return in the coming months to find the artist to sing for France in Israel. “We are renewing the show because it’s a good way to choose our representative,” she said.

Broadcast in January, the three primetime shows failed to achieve popularity among French viewers with an average of just 2.1 million people watching. Praised by the fans, the national selection may undergo some changes in order to attract a wider audience.

“Bonjour Minsk !” France returns to Junior Eurovision

The return of the national final is welcome, but it isn’t totally surprising. A more unexpected piece of news that gave rise to smiles is that France will compete in Junior Eurovision 2018. Unlike the original contest, France 2 will chose  the song internally.

“I’m so proud to be here tonight in #Lisbon with @MadameMonsieur and the whole French delegation and to meet @jonolasand! @FranceTele is getting more involved in #Eurovision: @France2tv will take part in this year’s #JuniorEurovision! @EBU_HQ” tweeted Delphine Ernotte.

France only took part once in Junior Eurovision, in 2004 with Thomas Pontier and the song “Si on voulait bien”. He ended up at the 6th place with 78 points.

Even if we knew since last Saturday that France would participate in Eurovision Junior, I ‘m happy that they renew “Destination Eurovision”. It’s a very good format to which there are not many details to modify (perhaps to suppress the covers of songs … They lengthen unnecessarily the emission and in the end, the only titles which the public wants to hear, they are the ones who will represent us perhaps at Eurovision). I especially hope that they will be able to find as many good songs for 2019 as for 2018, even the foreign public has hailed the quality… Read more »

So so happy for them!!! This year’s national selection was a success. So many good songs and a deserved winner. If sth is sucessful, you don’t change it. I’m looking forward to Destination Eurovision 2019 and I hope they find the winner of ESC soon!

I’m calling it now! Emmy Lyana should try again for France 2019!

It was the best national selection show by far (not including Melodi). They should host the show in a bigger venue though, the studio was so small and the stage tiny…

BTW 2.1m viewers for a national selection in France is all time record, that’s almost as much people watched Eurovision 2008 or 2007 in France. It was a very good number of viewers and that’s why they’ll do the show again next year.

I think Lisboa Jerusalem would’ve done better, it’s so theatrical. Nassi had an excellent song but he had to give it to another artist.

Hopefully the show is a smoother pacing next year. All the endless talking, covers round, etc all made the show a chore to watch. The songs were great, so just streamline the show and you’re good

Yeah but in France we like long shows. And oddly, most people love to hear old or hit songs so that’s why I’m pretty sure they’ll keep the covers. Most singing shows here are broadcasted from 21:00 (9p.m) to 23:30-23:45 (11:30 p.m). I understand your point but I’m pretty sure that the format will remain the same. Maybe they’ll add a third semi-final with 9 other artists since Destination Eurovision and Madame Monsieur, Alma, and Amir have really changed the way French people, artists, and label see the ESC 🙂

Une troisième demi-finale ? Bof… Read more »

I agree with Jo. No covers, no long intros (at least for the semis), no feedback from judges. I prefer short, dynamic, fast-paced shows, maybe with 8 songs in each semi final, and final.

Ukraine’s Vidbir should remove giving feedback to the contestants too. But I think they want people to listen to them because they are “stars” after all and that they are focusing more on showing their personality at the same time. Like what celebrities would typically do on other tv shows

Im glad France (and Wales) going to JESC, they will surely make the contest more diverse. DE brought some amazaing songs this year, and if they have masterpieces like Ok Ou Ko next year then it will very likely be my favorite National selection (again)! See you in Jerusalem and Minsk 😀

Loved Destination Eurovision! Definitely my favourite NF of the season. I love the effort that France is making with Eurovision once more. Ian really expecting them to win in the coming years. France and Italy have the best chances of being the next Big 5 winner.
I wonder will Amir return next year, he is half Israeli after all. (Really want him back <3 )

Destination Eurovision was my favorite national selection this year. The producers found a talented group of people and at least 5 songs could represent France in Lisbon. They should think about holding at least the final on a bigger venue though.

Read more »

Read more »

Read more »

It’s cool that they hold on to a selection which was obviously a success. But man, do I miss Patricia Kaas. To me personally, she was the one and only real star that participated in Eurovision so far.
