In a competitive year with a number of fan favourites, Israel’s Netta Barzilai outdid everyone. The “Toy” singer won over European televoters and took the trophy in a storm of Mizrahi sounds, chicken clucks and bold colour. Now, as Israeli fans celebrate the momentous win, attention turns to Israel hosting Eurovision 2019 and the growing controversy surrounding that.

Iceland has emerged as a hotspot of dissent. Some of the country’s Eurovision artists — from both the national finals and the actual ESC — have called on national broadcaster RÚV to boycott the 2019 contest over the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Among them is Daði Freyr, who came second to Svala in the national final in 2017 and who has emerged with his band Gagnamagnið as one of the country’s most beloved acts. Fans want him and the band to re-enter Söngvakeppni…but it’s clear that 2019 won’t be the year for him. He is very strong minded when it comes to matters of Israel vs. Palestine.

He tweeted: “Gagnamagnið was considering a come-back in Söngvakeppni 2019. However, we can not with good conscience be a part of the joy that is Eurovision, whilst the government of Israel and its army is brutally violating the rights of the people of Palestine around the corner. We urge RÚV to not take part in 2019″.

Daði is not the only one calling for a boycott. Paul Oscar — perhaps Iceland’s most beloved Eurovision star ever — expressed his opinion on the matter in a recent Facebook post.

“As much as I love Eurovision, I don’t think it should be too hard to sit one out and boycott a contest hosted by a nation that is repeatedly breaking international laws, violating basic human rights and committing bloody war crimes every single day. And has been doing so for the past 70 years. In this modern day and age, the news about Israel are definitely reaching people who upon till now may have been completely clueless about just how serious things are at Gaza. I used to be one of those clueless people. I had very little knowledge about what exactly was happening when Iceland last competed in Jerusalem in 1999.

Israels imagery campaign is biting them in the a** now. We know better! A friend of mine said: “I feel sorry for the people of Israel, who went through millenniums of segregation and the Holocaust, without regaining any knowledge about what peace truly is about. Instead they have now become the exact replica of their enemies”. This is the perfect opportunity to protest, to object against the massacre on the people of Palestine and draw the line for Israel. Dear RÚV. Grab this opportunity and use our absence to protest. We shouldn’t engage in this joyous party of denial! Entertainment, pop songs and glamorous outfits CAN be a political matter. To try and separate politics from entertainment and sports is just a lame excuse to ignore the matter in hand. Murdering innocent children is beyond everything political. It’s inhumane!

Let’s boycott Eurovision 2019. To sit out on one contest is nothing compared to Israel’s massacre in Palestine. Who in their right minds wants to perform in Jerusalem, when there is a bloodbath right around the corner? I sure don’t!”

And the Icelandic public seems to agree with Daði and Paul. A petition was launched on Monday urging RÚV to boycott the contest. At the time of writing this post on Wednesday morning, more than 16,000 Icelanders had already signed it.

On the evening news on Tuesday, Skarphéðinn Guðmundsson, the TV program director of RÚV, said that Iceland has not yet confirmed its participation in 2019, and said that they had until the fall to do so. He also said that the broadcaster would have the Israel/Palestine situation in mind when assessing whether or not Iceland will confirm. This suggests that RÚV is really thinking things over regarding the whole matter. Speaking to MBL, however, it seems Iceland is leaning toward participation. Guðmundsson said: “We expect to take part next year as every year”.

Israel’s Eurovision win comes at a time of mounting tension, which coincides with the official opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. On Monday Gaza saw unprecedented levels of violence that left 58 Palestinians dead and thousands more injured. As The Jerusalem Post reports, it was the highest death toll from Israeli fire since 2014.

Other European nations might also be thinking carefully about their next step. Dublin’s Lord Mayor has already called for Ireland to boycott for the contest.

Wow! I am stunned… The comment section here is absolutely DISGUSTING! Reading most of the comments make me sick. People, go and enjoy spring while it lasts and stop vomiting garbage on eachother! This is more than boycotting Israel over one terrorisr attack that just so happened to be fabricated. The Israeli government has been systematically forcing Palestinians off of their land and creating settlemenrs on that land. Iceland isn’t standing in solidarity with Hamas, but with the people of Palestine who are undergoing a system of apartheid similar to South Africa, pre-Mandela.

Hope in humanity restored. I think if Iceland doesn’t participate in next year’s Eurovision, many countries will follow their example and also withdraw from the contest. I am glad people are getting behind a cause and acknowledging the terrible crimes that the illegal state of Israel is committing against the Palestinians. As much as I like Eurovision, I would love to see many countries unifying against Israel’s crimes and boycotting the 2019 contest if it’s held in Israel. We cannot ignore or deny the situation behind the excuse that “Eurovision is not a Political event” well it is, ask Jamala.

It was already confirmed by several media outlets around the world that those who died in Gaza in the last few days were armed Hamas terrorists set out to attack Israel, so supporting this boycotting thing is supporting terrorism, period. I do think that the crisis in Gaza should be addressed and if you’re so concerned by it, why not do something about it in the rest 362 days of the year when it actually counts instead of blaming Eurovision? Also, we have to recognize Hamas responsibility for the crisis in Gaza too, that’s the only way we can move… Read more »

After 4 years of non-qualification, Iceland should definitely withdraw so they can re-think their Eurovision strategy, and come back stronger (like Portugal, Czech, etc). If they’re going to send another dreary ballad, might as well keep it to themselves. So by all means, withdraw

jimmy

The Actual hate for Iceland or Ireland to even consider not going to the ESC Israel 2019 is astounding. It actually shows how desperate they are to have good media attention for ESC 2019.
Well done wiwibloggs for showing use valuable information.

Marcelo

RÚV now considers seriously to withdraw from Eurovision 2019 after the petition got around 22,000 signatures. It will be sad that they miss out Eurovision just because of a political issue but I guess that’s only on them to change that. I highly doubt anyone will consider to join Iceland in this boycott, so good luck to them.

Still, you are looking way and way hypocritical as time progresses, Iceland. Remember when you send Selma to participate in Jerusalem 1999 and she got you your best result ever in the contest? Yeah… what happened there?

sam
Guest
Their placement at Eurovision has nothing to do with them supporting a Eurovision in Israel. If 1999 was hosted in London, for example, and everyone sent the same songs— they would have still most likely placed second. Has nothing to do with Israel. I also wouldn’t be too sure about nobody joining them in this boycott, minutes after the Israeli victory numerous nations called their participation into question— specifically the more liberal ones. I do believe Eurovision should remain an event to bring people together and should not involve politics whatsoever, and a Eurovision in Jerusalem is a politically-motivated gesture.… Read more »

OK poor Iceland. Already very isolated and they want to be even more alone. You forgot to say, Israel tried a few times to share Jerusalem with Palestine. But Palestine always went on war with Israel and because of that Palestine lost some territory. They always wanted to destroy Israel and the Jews, even centuries ago.

And since when LGBT family and Euro fans worry about Palestine and other people that kill gays?
I’m shocked with Iceland. I’m sure they are not Eurovision fans those that signed that petition.

Marcelo

Iceland is probably the most left-leaning country in all of Europe. That’s probably why Icelanders have a huge support of Palestine. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

But, boycotting Eurovision now? After competing 7 long years in the contest alongside Israel having already recognised Palestine as a state, it’s not consistent at all. It screams hypocritical.

IcelandDorgi

STUPID 22.000 Iceland people that forgot to boycott Russia during Crimea occupation and Georgian war. Fortunately I’m not one of them.

Lady Gaga
Guest

I have to say I totally agree with this. What Hamas did was a provocation, what were they expecting Israel to do, allow the people to cross the border & massacre civilians? Unfortunately, they got the coverage they wanted, to the delight of ultra-left leaning politicians. Also, agree with the point below, how can the West say they promote LGBT rights, while at the other hand they would support a regime (like Hamas) that kills LGBT people. Politicians should stay out of this contest

Julian
Guest

Iceland is scheduled to participate in Russia very soon to the Football World Cup. They are probably also thinking very hard not to participate.

Marcelo
Guest

No, actually. In fact, they are very thrilled to participate in their first World Cup. Just look at the Icelandic spokesperson this year: “Team Iceland is ready for the World Cup”.

Yeah, they don’t care it’s Russia, who has commited much more atrocities and violations of international law than Israel. I’m not angry at them because everyone wants to see their home team play in the biggest sports event in the planet but this sudden boycott for Eurovision seems hypocritical to say the least.

I find it funny that the Icelandic points giver was so proud of Iceland soccer team going to Russia, which is a country currently occupying a part of Ukraine (Crimea), in Europe, by force.
No boycotts there.

So far in that war, according to Wikipedia there are more that 10,000 casualties.
I guess Iceland finds that to be OK.
Well, then if you want to boycott – boycott, but at least have some integrity.

I also never see Icelandic people protest over Turkey occupying half of Cyprus.
Why is that?

I believe its not to the same extent (the damage being done etc)

I personally call on all nations to join the United States in its boycott of the World Cup.

Dear Israeli fans! In particular LILIA and BEFAN. Don’t pay attention to Bella and Denis and possibly CocoUK because it’s the same Swedish “person” whose only interest in Eurovision is to trash any nation that is not Sweden or its direct neighbours. He or she goes also by the name of Davve, Sara, Yankee, Hate Portugal, Anti-Jo. His/hers, who pleaded for the extermination of all Portuguese and whose sole purpose in life until next year will be to instigate hate against Israeli’s organisation of the ESC. Also he/she is a nordic supremacist, so don’t be surprised if will read anti-Semitic… Read more »

Im only myself. We are all different people.
But nice to see that English comprehensation isn’t very good in Israel. How you somehow got that we pleade for Potrtuguese extermination is beyond me. I would laugh if i wasn’t so concerned for lack of education

Really?

Again, a recurrent argument of this person. (Bella used it also). At least that is nicer than using blasphemy and wishing people were dead. BTW your English doesn’t seem perfect, as well, Denis/Davve/Sara/Bella/Anti-Jo/Hate Portugal. And yes, many times you used hate speech against Portugal. Now I see it will be against any country that wins Eurovision and that is not Sweden and possibly Denmark, Norway or Finland.

Denis

UH OK. I’m not Bella and she’s not me. II’m not any of those persons. Unlike some I don’t create fake accounts. I have never used hate speech against anybody on here, especially towards countries. I’m not against any country that wins ESC, why would I? That goes against the idea of ESC.. And what would be the point? Why you have us made us out to be a new generations Hitler’s out to exterminate people is beyond me. Especially when no one has said so. The only one creating hateful mood here is you when you accuse us of… Read more »

Ooo, i heard a really good joke the other day! I don’t remeber all of it, but the punch line goes something like this – ‘Eurovision Song Contest is not about politics and is about bringing people of all countries together’ :p

If there ever was a need for moderating or even disabling comments then this comment section would be a good example. It is way past derailed and over the cliff. No one makes sense, especially the pitbulls called Lilia and BeFan or whatever nick they have right now
Someone moderate and show you have some sense!

BEFAN

Denis dear…. you need moderation NOW??? (after almost 3 days of this thread??) What happened?… Or simply you are out of counter arguments – in front of proven facts or the truth – hence asking now for an escape road with the help of moderation? Ha ha ha

Coming from and Icelander To see the Icelandic nation calling for a boycott is odd, as others have mentioned, if we’re so against Israel hosting, why did we let them participate in the first place? This is the 4th time Israel wins and the 3rd time they’ll host, so why are we so paranoid all of a sudden, we had a contest in Azerbaijan and Ukraine not long ago, the World Cup is in Russia, but Israel is too much? I like that Iceland might withdraw though, we’ve really gone downhill and if we ever wanna go back to yearly… Read more »

After reading Paul Oscar’s post, I do really have to agree with him, especially given the most recent events in Israel/Palestine. Not sure how European nations that claim to uphold human rights, etc can attend the event in good conscience. The Israeli regime is behaving in a near fascist manner, thinking it can escape unscathed. Boycotts worked for ending South African apartheid, and it may work for ending the Israeli version! Sorry, Israeli ESC fans, but if the shoe fits, wear it. Perhaps the EBU should consider an alternate, universally acceptable location that is willing and able to host the… Read more »

No, it won’t prosper. Just look how FIFA is happy with the World Cup (another entertainment event followed by millions around the globe) being held in Russia and Qatar. This boycott will not prosper believe me. If they didn’t say anything about ESC being held in Moscow in 2009 just months after the Russo-Georgian War, then this will go the same way. Plus, neither Israel nor Palestine are saints regarding this conflict. And I’m pretty sure many of its citizens don’t agree with the stand of their rulers (Netanyahu for Israel and Hamas for Gaza). We don’t need to have… Read more »

Anyone who thinks Israel ” have now become the exact replica of their enemies” is delusional and doesn’t care about the truth., and should be ignored. Israel is not completely innocent, but anyone who thinks the Palestinians are just poor little defenseless babes not doing anything wrong and being slaughtered by the big mean Israel is completely uninformed and ignorant.

Just hold the contest in Tel Aviv

Kris

I don’t understand why the conflict is still going on? Gaza strip and west bank are officially recognized by UN as Palestine no? So why the protests in Palestine(even though peaceful) and why the Israeli reaction to protests(when they’re peaceful) ?

Marcelo
Guest

Are they peaceful? Because Gaza is controlled by a terrorist organization who has said that their main goal is the destruction and extermination of Israel. If I were in that spot, I would be calling for more border security, honestly.

Also, considering that everyone knows the situation at the Gaza border, WHO BRINGS BABIES TO A FREAKIN’ WAR ZONE?!

Kris

Why do they want to destroy Israel? That makes no sense unless they have some nazi ideology

Marcelo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamas#Aims

They are looking for “liberation”, however considering they have a military wing that often retaliates against Israel and they have Islamic fundamentalism as a main ideology (the same as ISIS) it’s not hard to see what they really want.

Pollaski

Because they weren’t peaceful?

Dude, they were launching kites with molotov cocktails on them hoping they’d fall and set fire to Israeli fields over the wall. You see all that smoke? That’s from tire fires the Palestinians set to smokescreen their movements.

Most casualties came from groups of Palestinians rushing the wall, encouraged by Hamas who told them the Israeli’s were fleeing and the wall would be breached if they ran forward.

Kris

Setting fire to the fields and killing people can’t be equated no? They could have used tear gas or water cannons no?

Are Palestinians also stronger than cannonballs?

Pollaski
Guest

They were using tear gas. And they’re in the middle of a f*cking desert. You think they have the water to repel thousands of people?

If you show up at myhouse, and say “I’m going to set your yard on fire”, and then actually try to, I would shoot you too.

Kris
Guest

They’re also next to a freaking body of water !! Yes they do have water in Israel!!

BEFAN
Guest

No Kris, not the west bank is recognized by UN as Palestine (because there is no Palestine state -it’s non existent). The UN recognizes the “Palestinian Authority” – that only handles civilian matters. The west bank actually belonged to Jordan – that they lost to Israel in 1967 war and Israel considers it liberated land (because the west bank sits actually on the hills of Judeah (which by it’s name one can already understand it’s the biblical land of Judaism)

Kris

The state of Palestine in 2012 was granted UN sovereign observer state status by a 138:9 vote . It equates to recognizing it as an independent nation.

The UN also recognizes Hamas as a terrorist outfit.

BEFAN

Exactly Kris; Observer!! and NOT(!) state but Authority ! (if it would be a state, the vote would be for membership status rather than observer) Enjoy your day 🙂

That’s expected since Iceland is probably the most left-leaning in the entire European continent. Their current Prime Minister is a left green politician and Iceland was the first Western European country to recognize the State of Palestine back in 2011. So it’s expected for some Icelanders to call for a boycott because of how much they love Palestine. But I bet Paul Oscar and many Icelanders are also really delighted to see their home team playing his first World Cup in Russia. You know Russia, the country who has supported the killing and slaughtering of LGBT people in territories like… Read more »

ok, ya’ll can not come if you don’t want to, though i don’t see the point in that. i’ll try to explain things from a left wing israeli jew: i feel like ya’ll have the wrong image of israel. you probably imagine a war country where people get shot in the streets. that’s not true. sure, the situation in israel isn’t great but it’s not as bad as you probably imagine. many jews and palestinians co exist in harmony and just want peace on borders, just the way we are. some of them don’t. some of them never will be… Read more »

In any case, can you assure us that in the case of a Jerusalem hosting, there won’t be fights and dead people again during the days of the contest? Beyond the security matters, what’s the symbolism of a party taking place where people are shot in their heads?
It should be Tel Aviv, otherwise EBU should look for another host.

Nitzili

People don’t get shot in Israel, people get shot inside Gaza. Obviously, I can’t assure anything 100 percent but I don’t see a reason why there should be any issues. I couldn’t care less which city will host but in any case, as I said, everything that’s happening in Gaza strip is unrelated to the Eurovision and I don’t see why mix the two. Hamas is responsible for what happens in Gaza at the moment and this boycotting nonsense isn’t going to help the situation one bit. I invite you to do more research to understand the situation better and… Read more »
