Eurovision may have entered its low season, but there is still time for some high drama. Hold on to your tea, because Salvador Sobral is about to spill some of his.

For his first appearance on Spanish TV, the Eurovision 2017 winner appeared on Spain’s most watched late-night TV show “El Hormiguero“. As ever, Salvador discussed Eurovision openly and without any filters. From Netta’s victory this year to his memories of his time in Kyiv, he shared his true thoughts and feelings rather than the words from a PR machine.

“Music in Eurovision is just a small detail of the show”

And that’s how you land in a different country!

In May he shared his feeling that nothing had changed about the contest following his momentous win. Last week he was asked about his thoughts once more and said music is not the centrepiece of the song contest.

“[Eurovision] is an entertainment show, an audiovisual one rather than a musical one. Music is not really important there. It’s a small detail of the show.”

He echoed his earlier sentiments about Netta’s winning song “Toy”.

“Indifference. It doesn’t move you. Songs that go by and don’t say anything. Don’t think I will buy her CD.”

When talking about his experience at Eurovision, he told the audience how fame affected him and his surprise over the security infrastructure.

“[Hours after winning Eurovision] your body is asleep — it doesn’t understand anything. I remember having four bodyguards following me all the time. One of them remained at our hotel room door and when I woke up, he was still there. I don’t know what they were thinking, that terrorists would kill the Eurovision winner? They don’t even know who they are, but well, now with Israel, you never know…”

[Arriving in Lisbon] was rough. Wasn’t easy. Was too much. I left Lisbon with only 50 people attending my concerts and when I came back millions were waiting for me. It was all of the sudden.

But Salvador also recognised the many positive ways Eurovision has impacted him.

Sobral on the ‘Late Motiv Night Show’

‘El Hormiguero’ wasn’t the only late night talk show he attended. He also boosted his visibility on Spain’s beloved — and humourous — Buenafuente’s show.

From his stay in Andalucía to Spain’s recent change of government to his feelings about Airbnb and Uber, Sobral has plenty of words.

“I find Airbnb and Uber horrible — and the  —censored – mother that gave birth to them. Throwing people out of their typical neighbourhood and putting ‘guiris’ (a pejorative for tourists) there instead. It’s serious.”

Salvador says he is filled with happiness and gratitude following his successful heart transplant. As he explains: “I feel like a 1 year old, instead of 28”.

Sobral’s Spain Tour

Salvador Sobral is about to start his “Excuse Me Tour” around Spain, joined by his rock-electronic band Alexander Search. From north to south, west to east, the whole nation will be covered.

Check below if he’s coming to a town near you.

More venues to be announced soon

Instead of making headlines of Gossip and bad transcripts of what he said or didn’t say, it was better that Wiwiblogs would write about the reviews of his concerts. Here it is one review of his first concert in Spain Málaga: “The concert given by Salvador Sobral at the Cervantes Theater was a musical milestone, of those who create a trend and of those that will never be forget. See Salvador on stage, so small and so great at the same time, with that personality so pronounced that makes him different, without being conceited or overwhelming, with that sensitivity and… Read more »

The transcript Wiwiblogs made of the interview is not correct. The presenter asked if he liked the song that won this year and he replied that the song was “indifferent” to him, “didn’t bring any emotion”; then the presenter asked if he would buy the CD ; and then he said, “no I don’t think so…unless…” and the presenter interrupt and asked another thing . The way they transcript it’ s wrong, seems that was Salvador that brought the theme of the CD what is totally incorrect. Again, they are distorting what Salvador said in order to make it seem… Read more »

Yes, and in the interview he said that he is very grateful and that Eurovision brought him many positive things; also that he would compete again if he could go back. That fact is not incompatible with the opinion that in the actual show of Eurovision music is just a little detail. And I think he is right, the most important thing is staging , and that is ok, what’s the problem? Perhaps there is room for another format, with more space for music and live musicians .

I’ll be honest…I loved that Portugal won ESC 2017. I was rooting for Belgium, then the Netherlands, at one point Estonia, Bulgaria, and heck, the UK at one point even. But then I learned about Salvador and Portugal’s entry, and I knew it was special. When he won, I was excited. I was excited to see a country win for the first time. But then, Salvador started opening his mouth. I was excited for ESC 2018 in Lisbon and I thought it was a great show. But, unfortunately, Salvador’s comments left a dark shadow over the show. Did I want… Read more »

All the Eurovision winners have a full schedule, look at Netta, Celine Dion, Lordi, Mans etc.

The only winner that might not have a busy schedule is Conchita, otherwise the winners are always busy, wether it’s working on projects or touring…

So my answer to your dare is everyone

Måns is busy?… doing what? Hosting tv shows? Netta is touring gay parades. You cannot compare Celine Dion, as her fame did not come from winning Eurovision. And Lordi?… God knows…

It might not have moved Sobral – which is totally fair…
But “TOY” did make me feel something… JOY, which to me is every bit a valid emotion, like the emotions i felt when watching Sobral and Jamala…

I Think Europe needed som fun, light and joy, in these depressing times we are experiencing…

I do however Think, it would be a good idea PR wise, to not say anything if you dont have anything Nice to say… you Can clearly tell that the support behind Sobral is declining, which is sad to see since he is an Amazing artist…

Declining?! He is selling out the biggest theatres in Spain and has already scheduled a busy tour in Germany and Switzerland, for 2019.
He is one of the best artists that ever took part in Eurovision and he is here to stay. He doesn’t need the approval of Eurovision fans to have a brilliant career ahead (it’s quite the opposite actually… the most he distances himself from the immature Eurovision fanbase, the more respect he gets from his public).

The problem is that they are always asking him the same questions and he does not know how to lie. Honestly, I don’t like “Toy” either (I prefer Israeli songs from 2015 and 2017) and I was hoping Austria, Czech Republic or Estonia would win, but I understand why Netta appealed to many. Sobral should be more respectful to Netta, understand not all of us have the same taste and that his personal taste and style is not necessarily more sophisticated than someone else’s just because he sees it that way. More respect, please.

Well, I think you have a point. Perhaps it’s time for EBU to have two types of Eurovision show, one for the staging and big show as it is now (don’t have nothing against it but it’s getting so bad reviews from music critics, people in general have a terrible opino of the music that is presented in Eurovision) and another show for musicians, with live musicians, good songs and interpreters.

Yes your opinion should be expressed in a nice way. Example- Nice way. I really didn’t like that song. It’s loud and noisy and had no real meaning beyond fun. Arrogant way: That song really sucks and all songs like it are just trash and pointless and the people singing them are not true artists. One way respects other people and their opinions, the other reveals arrogance and the belief other people and what they think and feel doesn’t matter. You can totally choose to live your life not caring what other people think or feel. Acting like your opinion… Read more »

Salvador keeps trashing ESC because it attracts attention to himself. he knows what would make people talk about him so he keeps doing it, even in the midst of ESC week. I bet he dislikes TOY, FUEGO, HOW YOU WIRTE A SONG and all the other songs that have a beat. if he can’t see the message TOY tries to convey it’s his fault, we know people were moved and felt something good towards the song, as well as Fuego and that is the truth the voting showed us.

Other remarkable statements during his Spanish TV tour were: “Ok, i´m the Cristiano Ronaldo of Music but i do pay my taxes” (in reference to Ronaldo´s problems with the Spanish Tax Office) and “I need lots of energy when i am on tour, thankfully i have cocaine to help”. Probably the latter was a joke as his medical condition won´t allow him to do cocaine but this is still a bit risky on a familiar show anyway.
