The ABBA heat is on — or was it ever off? Not likely, but with the sequel of the beloved movie Mamma Mia now in theatres, it’s safe to say the dial has been turned up a few notches in recent weeks. And Iceland will unleash their own ABBA extravaganza starring some Eurovision divas.

This autumn will see the return of a popular ABBA tribute show and it’s starring some of your favourite Eurovision divas from the north: Eurovision runners-up Selma and Yohanna, as well as Regina and Stefanía Svavarsdóttir.

Stefanía is well known for her numerous entries in Söngvakeppnin. Most recently she performed the club banger “Heart Attack” in the 2018 national selection. But Stefanía’s most memorable performance is likely “Augnablik” — her entry during the 2015 cycle.

This is not the first time that this particular ABBA tribute show has been staged. Back in 2014, Selma, Yohanna and Regína were in the cast, accompanied by singer-actress Jóhanna Vigdís Arnardóttir (aka Hansa). Jóhanna has some solid Eurovision and ABBA ties herself, for she was one of Selma’s backing vocalists in Jerusalem in 1999, and she also plays the role of Donna in the Icelandic version of Mamma Mia.

The 2014 ABBA show was a huge hit and in May they decided to do it again, staging two more shows. Needless to say, the two shows sold out within minutes. And now it’s time for a third encore, which will open in October in Harpa concert hall in downtown Reykjavík.

Due to other obligations, Hansa won’t be joining the divas in October. Stefanía will perform instead — and as we all know, she has some serious pipes! The girls won’t be flying solo. They will be joined on stage by Helgi Björnsson, one of Iceland’s most beloved singer and actors. Alongside Hansa, he was also in the Icelandic Mamma Mia musical, where he stepped into Pierce Brosnan’s shoes and played the role of Sam.

So Icelanders are eagerly waiting for October to come, because if there is anything that goes together like caramel and chocolate, its ABBA and Eurovision. Mamma Mia, here we go again!

P.S. Amanda Seyfried says hello. Earlier this week, Wiwibloggs was honoured to attend the world premiere of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in London.
