You may not know her name now, but pay attention: Sonya Kay is a big deal in her native Ukraine.
The Chernivtsi-born beauty recently caught up with wiwiblogger Deban Aderemi at the Big Wedding Festival in Ukraine, where she rubbed shoulders with performers including ALEKSEEV, Monatik, Markus Riva and more.
The 27-year-old performed her massive hit “Listen to Your Heart.” The music video has racked up more than a million views on YouTube — and it’s easy to understand why.
Sonya, who has a master’s degree in interior decorating from Kingston University in the UK, knows exactly where to pitch her voice. It sits somewhere between sexy, mysterious and smouldering. The sound is full of fire yet totally cool.
Another success? The thoroughly contemporary number “Star Soundtrack”.
“You never know which song is going to be a hit,” she says. “We never in a million years thought that this was going to be the one. It was #1 on the charts, #1 on Shazaam. We were like what the hell is going on?”
“When we record we are thinking, ‘This song is going to be the one’ and it never ends up being the one.”
Given her massive following in Ukraine, surely she’s well placed for Eurovision. After all, it’s rumoured that she’s been invited to compete in Vidbir multiple times.
“I’m thinking maybe next year I’m saying yes. I’ll be ready inside emotionally and psychologically. It’s a very big deal. You get on stage — not just in one country, but in other countries. And you need to be super confident and think you’re doing amazing. I’m doing great, but emotionally it’s very hard for me to be on stage anyway. I’m thinking next year I’m going to be on Eurovision.”
And as she runs toward that goal, she’s also eyeing a breakthrough in other countries.
“We’re trying to be not only in Ukraine — but in Europe, in America, in Canada, in all these countries. My songs are actually playing on some radios in America, in Canada, but in Ukrainian because of the diaspora.”
