The night is long and Eleni Foureira needs you to hold her close and lay a kiss on her lips. Or so go the lyrics of her latest single “Caramela”. She released the toe-tapping, Greek-language track at the end of June, but has today followed-up with the English-language version. Her audience is vast and she’s ready to reach out to even more of you.

The Greek superstar worked on the collaboration with Doron Medalie, the man who wrote “Toy”, the only song that burned brighter than “Fuego” with the European public at Eurovision.

The Latin flair of the original remains in tact, but now her message comes through more clearly for a non-Greek-speaking audience. “I can be your Cinderella,” she says. “There’s nothing else I need tonight. It’s only you I got in sight…”

“Caramela” English version — Eleni Foureira

“Caramela” has a distinctly Latin feel and has trademark Foureira written all over it. The song may have originally been released in Israel last year by Moshe but Eleni’s version has a unique feel. It may not be the pop banger that “Fuego” fans are looking for but the Iberian flavour is nothing new for Eleni. After all, she released “Fuego” in Spanish.

Eleni’s version of “Caramela” is a blend of Iberian heat, Greek substance and Hebrew flourishes, making this a truly international collaboration. This isn’t the pair’s first time working together either. Eleni recorded her own version of Medalie’s “Golden Boy” in 2015, which she performed at the Wiwi Jam in Lisbon.

Foureira and Medalie also worked together on her 2016 song “Come Tiki Tam”. The result was an dance-pop banger that was submitted as a possible Greek entry. Ultimately, Greece sent Argo with “Utopian Land” and failed to qualify for the grand final.

Speaking about his latest collaboration with Eleni, Medalie said:

“Eleni Foureira and I are good friends and really enjoy working together. She really wanted to come to the Gay Pride parade in Tel Aviv but did not make it because of a tight schedule. Eleni is aware of the Israeli audience love, and I send her so many videos of people dancing to “Fuego”. Now that we (Israel) have won the Eurovision and the Cyprus threat is gone, I believe that an exciting reunion will soon be formed between Eleni and the Israeli audience.”

“Caramela” reminds me a lot of early Miami Sound Machine. The sound is maybe a little *too* retro for me (which is saying a lot), but I think a remix or two could be interesting.

Doron Madelie may not be the most pleasant person , but he sure knows how to write catchy music. Good luck Eleni! Good luck Doron 🙂

Netta about Eleni: “When she is on stage you are hypnotised” And she said other sweet things about her. This is a very interesting interview in my point of view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9obO-2xoG0

I keep hoping Israel does something like Azerbaijan did and invites former female Eurovision participants for an interval show with Netta and Dani International, ending with everyone joining in for “Diva”

Hey, a fella can dream, can’t he?

Out of curiosity, how popular is he in Israel? And how big was his version of Caramela?

1) He’s a mega star in Israel. His style is soft-Mizrahi music, so even Israelis who don’t like Mizrahi music don’t dislike him.
2) The song was a radio hit and was played pretty much everywhere – clubs, weddings, restaurants..

Thanks guys — v. interesting! Love that Eleni is able to work with a song written for a guy and make it her own.
