The Jutland city of Herning will host Dansk Melodi Grand Prix this Saturday. Now Greenland’s public broadcaster KNR has announced that they will broadcast the event live! But that’s not it: Viewers in Greenland are also able to vote for their favorite song by sending a text message or by using the DMGP app.
This is due to the participation of Wiwi Jury winners Julie & Nina with their English/Greenlandic song “League of Light”, which will mark the first time in 40 years that a song in Greenlandic will be sung at DMGP. Both singers have Greenlandic roots and speak Danish and Greenlandic. “League of Light” tells their story of being influenced by both cultures. Julie was raised in Greenland’s capital Nuuk and moved to Aarhus at 19, while Nina’s mother is half Greenlandic. A story they want to share not only with the Danish viewers, but also with the international audience.
In addition to Denmark and Greenland, the Faroe Islands are broadcasting and voting as well. Just like in 2008, when Faroese band The Dreams took part with “La’ mig være” and secured a fourth place finish.
The first and until this year last time Greenlandic appeared at DMGP was in 1979, when Rasmus Lyberth took to the stage with “Faders bøn” (Father’s Prayer).

Honestly “League Of Light” has to win as it’s the strongest in the selection and now Greenland is here and what better way to invite a country to broadcast and vote in your NF than with open arms. That’s sweet. They’re embracing diversity amongst the Danish nation. Hope that here in the UK we will have a larger national final one day then we can include some Welsh and Scottish artists as well.
I absolutely agree. Having a polished and well encompassing national final for the UK is something I dream for, however until we hit the Top 10/5 again (which could happen this year) I don’t see it on the cards. Also, with selections like Melodifestivalen, Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu and DMGP they unlike most national finals showcase all of their country including their territories and languages like with France and Australia did this year with the Corsican and Aborigine Languages respectively in their own national finals. It’s great that they chose to broadcast it, but giving Greenland voting rights this year because they have a contestant originating from Greenland dining in their native language feels like the broadcaster trying to get them to win,

Just to clarify. DR is not denying them access to vote but the time difference often result in the Greenlandic broadcaster deciding to send these types of shows with delay (which means they don’t vote. Greenland (and the Faroe Islands for that matter) can vote if they want to. I’m a Dane and the hype here right now is for Leonora. That song is a typical song the Danish public would choose (I know my people). But let’s see what happens tomorrow. It depends on the live performances. I’m not surprised that Greenland has got its own broadcaster, but I am surprised that DRK does not broadcast in Greenland.
