After two semi-finals, a viral sensation and multiple media mentions, the moment is upon us. On Saturday the city of Portimão will open its doors to the final of Portugal’s Festival da Canção 2019.

The final will have eight songs in competition but only one can win the ticket to Tel Aviv. And the honour of presenting said winner goes to Eurovision 2018 host Filomena Cautela and Vasco Palmeirim.

After a stunning victory in 2017 with Salvador Sobral and a last place finish in 2018, will Portugal be able to bounce back to the top again?

The running order of the show was confirmed today. Calema will open, while Ana Cláudia will close the show. Fan favourite Conan Osíris will perform in the penultimate slot, while semi-final two winner NBC will perform fifth.

But who should win? Listen to the eight finalists and tell us who you’d like to see win Festival da Canção 2019. You can vote for as many acts as you like, but you can only vote one — so make it count.

1. Calema – “A Dois”

2. Mariana Bragada – “Mar Doce”

3. Matay – “Perfeito”

4. Surma – “Pugna”

5. NBC – “Igual a Ti”

6. Madrepaz – “Mundo a Mudar”

7. Conan Osíris – “Telemóveis”

8. Ana Cláudia – “Inércia”

Who should win Portugal’s Festival da Canção 2019?

Everbody is focused on Matay… But I think the real contender to Conan will be NBC, because he has a greater apeal to mainstream Portuguese audience and jury.

I honestly don’t get the hype for Conan Osiris what so ever… I can’t connect to the song in any way shape or form. Personally, I’m rooting for Calema but will be happy if anything other than Conan or Surma win.

I am afraid of voting for Conan because every other artist that I voted for seems to be cursed and for some weird reason doesnt go to eurovision, either because they do not win or because their win and they end up “disqualified” (hi Ukraine!).

I hope this doesn’t turn into another of a long list of disappointing national final results from this season…even when we get the right winner (Maruv), extraneous factors spoil the celebration…RTP will have lots to explain if Conan can’t win because of poor jury score…they have been hovering around top 10 in the Odds and will quickly freefall if they don’t make the right choice…Portugal has been known to leave fan favorites behind and pick boring jury songs …still, this is the most competitive and high quality Festival da Canção we’ve seen in ages–they need to keep it up and… Read more »

As in the SFs I agree with the poll. Conan, Surma, Calema or NBC. That’s it. Hope the juries don’t kill Conan chances.

Surma’s my pick but Conan would be good, too.
Weirdly enough, only the first two in the running order would be bad choices. I think Portugal qualifies for the final with any of the other six. Great year for Festival Da Cancao!

I think everyone wanrs Conan Osiris and “Telemóvies” to win but for me it’s my 7th favourite! I love the Dihaj vibes that Surma gives me and her song is so mysterious along with the staging that it works and we don’t really have a song that gives me that feeling so I would like her to slay it and get through her semi

It seems RTP also wants Conan to win, that’s a great running order for him. He’ll sing after all the other contenders and between two very relaxing songs. Now it’s up to him to bring his A-game (and stick to the melody). I don’t know how the regional juries will see it (or Surma), but a big reaction from the crowd could help. I guess it’s between him, NBC and Matay.

Jake

Matay was second in the Semi with the public which makes him dangerous for the final…the final should have a more broader audience that might not be the hardcore fans that watched the Semis…I think Matay is lucky he does not have another traditional song in the final…Conan is competing with Calema/NBC for the Portuguese radio-friendly audience and competing against Surma for the avant-garde experiential audience…Matay is the only one selling a the “voice” unless NBC can steal some public votes from him…this is bound to be a nail biter…but not set in stone that Conan wins televote or that… Read more »

But many old folks also loved Madrepaz, it’s the type of song south folks enjoy, public vote gave them 10 points! So Matay will compete with Madrepaz. NBC also appeals to 30+ people. It’s more open than you might think (I hope).

This national final season NONE of my favourites won their national final (Maruv won but she won’t go unfortunately). So probably my favourite Conan Osíris will not advance either.

Those stupid old-fashioned juries will go with Matay and Conan will win the televote. At the end the jury favourite will win like we saw many times 🙁

I agree that sometimes the juries prevent certain acts from getting through, like Conan here – but for every time the jury prevents the weird and interesting it saves us from things like kamil show last year and many other ‘joke’ entries.

I do think Matay will dominate the jury but nowhere near enough televote to get the ticket.

Any you never know maybe the juries will have grown to like Conan

Sal

Kamil Show would have been so much more entertaining than Qami though! However, in a situation where it was Kamil vs. Tamar Kaprelian then I would have been grateful for the juries preventing Kamil show from winning.

I’m not so sure about that. Conan has several regional juries to please, and I’ve seen in the past two finals of Festival da Canção how the results from the each of the regional votes differed from other. In 2017, while Salvador Sobral won the jury vote, he came second in the televote, but his closest competitor had a lower jury ranking, paving his way to nabbing Portugal’s historic first win in Eurovision. 2018 saw the juries giving top marks to both Claudia Pascoal and Catarina Miranda (who had a more traditional fado/jazz song) so it was a more neck… Read more »

Also, since Hungary and Lithuania decided to burn their chances to win, this leaves only potentially Iceland as a possible competitor. But how 2019 goes, I am afraid Iceland and Portugal will manage to sabotage their chances. 🙁

I had them in my top 10 in 2012 and 2008, but yeah, it’s more rare. This year, they could shine!
EDIT: I accidentally wrote 2018 instead of 2008. I meant Senhora do Mar, but O Jardim is also beautiful and it was in my top 20 last year.

Most likely winners are Conan Osiris, Surma, NBC and Matay and surprisingly, I wouldn’t riot if it’s any of them. Calema seems to be less likely to win, but I’d support them as winners too. Portugal made sure to have a quality entry no matter what. No Light On / Run with the Lions gap in quality here.

Gun to the head, it has to be Conan, though, but since I am preparing myself for all options in this stupid year, alternatives don’t sound so bad either.

I still support Conan, even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of his contrived and somehow messy staging. Anyway I keep my fingers crossed for my favourites: Surma, Ana Claudia and Mariana Bragada.

He has the pimp spot of the running order so RTP wants him to win. And they should come on, he has 3.7 millions of views (live + studio combined) on Youtube on the fdc channel. He brings up the more money earnings and if he wins the hype will grow even more all accross Europe and he will hit 10/20+ millions views before the end of march.
Do they want to stick with no more than 500,000 with Matay ?

Most of the people are listening to the songs for the first time on the day of Eurovision during the show, so being a grower might help you with Eurovision fans following the contest during the year but not with a huge amount of the voters at home (including juries)

Will the difference in jury system for the final really make that much difference? A recurring theme this year is the NF favourites being knocked from the top spot by the juries – will this not happen in Portugal too?

Actually, if you go to his Instagram, Conan just confirmed a few days ago that he will stick to the original melody as much possible. That was one of the main reasons a lot of people (Portuguese and foreigners) were disappointed about his performance. That can be the reason the jury didn’t give more points. I love the song from the first days that came out but my live reaction for his performance has: “ok… we’re going to lose a good chance to win the Eurovision because he is not singing it well, he’s too nervous and the public will… Read more »

What is the deal with “Telemóveis”? Like, everybody seems to freaking love this song but I just don’t get it at all. I just dislike that song so much. No offense though! We all have different tastes in music and I actually love songs that are different but that is just waaaaay over the top for me.
