While MARUV may have won Ukraine’s national final with her number “Siren Song”, she won’t be going to Eurovision. Broadcaster UA:PBC now has a vacancy that must be filled. So who should get that ticket to Tel Aviv and represent Ukraine at Eurovision 2019?

The obvious choice would be for the broadcaster to select another act from the grand final of Vidbir 2019. But who should they pick? Have a look at the five remaining acts and tell us who you think should be Ukraine’s act for Eurovision 2019. You can vote for as many acts as you like, but you can only vote once — so make it count!

Anna Maria – “My Road”

The sisterly duo did not make a good impression with the grand final jury, who ranked them last. The twins were also ranked second to last with the public televote, placing last overall.

Brunettes Shoot Blondes – “Houston”

The indie rock band got off to a good start, placing second in their semi-final. However they may have been upstaged by their tricked-out piano at the grand final, as they placed fourth overall.

Freedom Jazz – “Cupidon”

Freedom Jazz made an impact with the jaunty song, colourful staging — and because one of their singers was heavily pregnant. Freedom Jazz were the jury’s favourite and place second overall. As they are the runners-up, they could be seen as the obvious pick for Eurovision.

KAZKA – “Apart”

KAZKA was a fan favourite coming into the competition, however lacklustre live vocals diminished some of the support for “Apart”. Still, KAZKA placed second in the televote and third overall.

YUKO – “Galyna guliala”

The electronic folk duo YUKO was the third favourite act of the jury, but the least favourite of the public. They placed fifth overall.

Which Vidbir 2019 finalist should Ukraine send to Eurovision 2019?

Maruv!!!. I sympathize with Ukraine in their conflict with Russia, believe Crimea is Ukraine, and absolutely do not support Russia but Ukraine is acting ridiculous. Aside from the actual physical conflict, often just as important in international conflicts is the image a nation projects to the world . If you continue to act this way Ukraine its clear that you simply traded one form of authoritarianism for another.

I think they should withdraw. With such negative publicity, they will lose their 100 % qualification record. And no matter who they will choose, he/she/they will be overshadowed by Maruv- and the delegation will have so many awkward moments everytime they interact with fans and the press. By the way, I am Turkish with Crimean Tatar heritage, and I am a huge fan of my sis’ Jamala. I was moved beyond words when she won. And I am 100% with Ukraine with the Crimean issue, it is an invasion of a soverign state by an intruder. But this whole Maruv… Read more »

But Jamala just ruin a vidbir with her political questions. Because she is a queen but anyone else is not. It’s doesn’t “matter” that Ja had concerts in Russia before (2015), but its MATTER that Maruv will have. This is so ridiculous.

I mean no one is “getting” a ticket because the artist chosen will have to fund their own trip and expenses for the performance if the broadcaster has the same standards and presents the same contract to any other artist. The tag line is disingenuous. Anyways I don’t think this article should have been published in the first place. If anything Ukraine should just withdraw. I understood the situation with Julia (rules are rules) and I liked Jamala’s song in 2016. But the politics have gotten out of hand at this point and the EBU needs to step up and… Read more »

Ukrainian singers and bloggers said that better that no one take part at Eurovision because they will have so many negative and contract is not good
Really you pay for all staff, but you cant say about political or something else, only with press in your contract. This is so disgusting

Typical measured, adult responses below. Seriously guys, they’ve said they will send someone else, and it’s this group to select from. Ukraine don’t give a damn what any of us think.

Colin
Colin

And THAT is the issue. They just don’t care about what anyone else thinks. They have no sense of respect or duty. If the winner dropped by any other circumstance (scheduling conflict, lack of interest, sickness, death, ect.), I’d gladly debate on who to pick next. I guess most of these songs are good, but that’s not the issue. This is a political ploy and a sabotage and it deserves to be dragged through the mud.

No, she shouldn’t.
It’s not Jamala who wrote that disgusting contract that was proposed to sign by Maruv.
Contract, not what Jamala asked during Vidbir is a reason why Maruv withdrawns.

But she facilitated the political agenda of the broadcaster by asking political questions that really shouldn’t have been asked. No one should be asking those question, not at Vidbir, and not at a press conference in Tel Aviv.

Ukrainians are proud nation and they want their representative to be fully supportive to the fact that Russia is an agressor and unlawfully took Crimea.

Nothing wrong in Jamala’s attempt to put Maruv in situation (of beeing asked the question) that she would be put in anyway!

Also just remember that this is the same country that in 2010 picked an artist in the December, had a national final to pick his song and everything, but literally a couple of days before the deadline they decided to withdraw him, hold a new national final then disqualify the winning song of that national final too. So in conclusion, don’t be surprised by any of this

Jon Ola Sand now you see what happens when you let you break the rules of the competition and allow political songs to participate, give them the victory. EBU must already learn to follow their own rules. 2013 – the admission number of Finland; 2014 – a victory based on a provocative image, and not on a song (this is with such a choice of great songs); 2015 – “non-political” song of Armenia (which I personally like very much); 2016 – “non-political” song of Jamala and low points for Lazarev, non-admission of Romania after the selection due to financial debts… Read more »

2014 ‘provocative image’? A man in a dress? That is provocative to you?! You must learn to go out more so you can be offended by the real things that matter in life. In 2014, you fail to mention that the song was powerful, well written and performed absolutely beautifully. The staging was amazing and reflective of the song and the vocals were by far the best of the night. My father, like you, does not understand cross dressing or ‘drag’, but even he saw the talent and agreed that the right song won. Don’t let your own prejudices get… Read more »

They will all refuse, I think. No one would participate after having known such conditions in the contract (if they’re true). It may be better for Ukraine to withdraw this year.

I’m sure Belarus or Moldova would KILL for the chance to send a song as good as Siren Song, but I guess UA:PBC just really doesn’t want to win again, or the leadership is terribly incompetent, or a mixture of both. Anyway, technically all of artists in the final seem to have something that could break the contract (including BSB, their Brexit line could be controversial), therefore by the way things are going if they all refuse to sign the contract we’ll probably end up with TseSho with “Hate” being sent lol

I hope that the new representative, chosen by UA:PBC, will reject to sign that contract too.
