Temos um vencedor! After a marathon show, Portugal has finally chosen Conan Osíris with the song “Telemóveis” to represent them at Eurovision 2019 in Tel Aviv. The hype was real, and now his ticket to Israel is too.

Tonight saw the return of the one and only Filomena Cautela to the Eurovision world as well as one of the strongest (if not the strongest) line-up in the history of Festival da Canção.

In the end, Conan Osíris managed to get the most points from both the jury and the televote: “Telemóveis” earned 24 points: 12 from the jury and 12 from the televote.

First up were the juries. There were seven of them representing the different regions of Portugal, and Conan Osíris was the artist that received the most points by a landslide! He received six out of seven sets of 12 points and a set of 10 points, a total of 82 points.

NBC came second with 54 points, and Surma came third with 46 points. Those votes were later converted to points in Eurovision-style from 12 to 3 (there were only eight songs).

festival da canção

Despite Conan’s landslide victory in the jury vote, the televoting was tense. While waiting for the top marks —  the 8, 10 and 12 — to be revealed, there was still the possibility that NBC got more votes than Conan Osíris.

However, the Portuguese public placed “Igual a ti” third and then “Telemóveis” in first, so Conan Osíris scored the highest possible amount of points.

Festival da Canção 2019 Final – Running order

  1. Calema – “A dois”
  2. Mariana Bragada – “Mar doce”
  3. Matay – “Perfeito”
  4. Surma – “Pugna”
  5. NBC – “Igual a ti”
  6. Madrepaz – “Mundo a mudar”
  7. Conan Osíris – “Telemóveis”
  8. Ana Cláudia – “Inércia”

Apart from tonight’s performers, the show also welcomed countless Eurovision stars. As interval acts, we had former representatives of Portugal at Eurovision including Vania Fernandes, Cláudia Pascoal and Isaura, and Anabela.

Do you think Portugal made the right choice? Who was your favourite? Do you think Portugal can be in the final for the third year in a row? Tell us in the comment section below!

And you certainly have spoons on your eyes! Unfortunately or fortunately Portugal will send something that is not just simply trying to please the audience with something mainstream the public can easily recognise and you’re a good example Musically the portuguese entry surely stands out and even if you don’t like let’s say it a brave choice and not an easy one such nearly all the other ones.

I can not resist. Since yesterday, 02-16-2019, social networks have attacked Conan Osiris and his song “Cell Phones” by Conan Osiris. This boy sang and (dis) delighted who heard him in the 1st semifinal of the RTP1 Song Festival. Although I enjoyed the music a lot, I had never bothered to understand it, especially the lyrics. That is when a netizen, after the atrocities that have been written, about the performance of this artist publishes a post that I strongly recommend his reading. I also read it (several times) and if I liked the music I liked it even more.… Read more »

People who don’t like this song have yet to form a good explanation for it. They don’t need one, but most of them try to.

“It’s way too weird”
“It’s out of sync”
“It’s scary” (I heard this!)
“It’s artsy-fartsy for people who think they are smarter”

When you squeezed them and their arguments they all end up at that point of “I just don’t like it”. If that’s the case just go for it, no need to bash who likes this song or to make yourself look smarter.

I can’t believe y’all think this is good.. the instrumental part is awesome, i will give him that, but i’m sorry it says nothing to me, there’s no quality in his voice, and i can’t describe this as conceptual music or art because it’s not well put together in my opinion.

I am not Portuguese and don’t understand overall the language (only some words) but I adore that song. Of course everybody is entitled to their opinion and express it freely. The problem with your comment (and so many others) is that you act suprised that other people do like the song, just like me. Indeed, this is a bit offensive as you are imposing your view on others. Your comment is actually not the worse I’ve seen, but it goes in that direction and this is what pisses people off.

Just sharing my opinion here, but am I the only one that really, really dislikes this song? Right now, it’s in my personal last spot. I think the staging is weird, I mean, the guy next to Conan looks like a bird?? I don’t like the dancing and I definitely don’t like his voice. It sounds too whiny and almost sounds like he’s trying to hypnotise you or something. I cannot really explain it well, but seriously, how do so many people seem to like this? Well, listen, you’re right that some comments are inflamentory… But you have to see, it has been years and years of laughing about the Portuguese entries in the ESC community. And now that the underdog has won and comes up with out of the box impactful material (whether you like it or not) there are fans that are reacting very badly to that and saying really bad things about Portugal (not only the songs but the country and the people, which is unfair and uncalled for). It’s natural that the Portuguese fans overreact.

I personally believe Telemoveis is extremely artistic, brave and interesting. I can see him being called by Madonna soon, while Keiino is nice but is a made up act for the Eurovision than won’t have any following after Esc because no one will be interested, not even them. And I’m not Portuguese, I’m from Spain(and I don’t rig polls nor usually like Spanish songs, btw).

Well, I understand not liking the song or the performance, this is personal preference, but I think the clothes that make him look like a bird is intentional, he’s trying to call the sky with his cell phone. I interpret this as some sort of fallen angel allegory, the whole song is metaphorical about death and connection with loved ones. I find it very original, but I agree that the performance is a bit off putting.

You want someone to explain the performance to you, so here you go. The song is about someone trying to call a person that is dead. It’s about the uselessness of technology (cell phones) to deal with “saudade” (a word that has no translation in other languages but is a mixture of longing and nostalgia for something that cannot return). The name of the singer, Osiris, is the Egyptian god of rebirth and life beyond death, which again connects with the theme of the song. The mask on his face is a reminiscence of this Egyptian god Osiris, but it… Read more »

I would like to say two things: 1st, although its completly valid for you to don’t like the song, you cannot deny that this is probably one of the best and captivating stage performances this year (pairing with Hatari). And he did that just with his stage presence (clothes and moves) and his dancer and without any fancy LED screen, props or special effects. Spain captivates with fun dance song. This is such a weird entry. It seems original I`ll give you that but not every original thing is a nice thing. Same with Iceland. Being original on the purpose of being original is actually not an original idea and generally fails

imo the song itself is not that bad but the performance is dead awful.i turned it off to search for the lyrics video
just my opinion but all this attempt to be as weird as possible kills the message and turns this song into a joke

I’m not portugese nor do i speak the language, but i have heard from a handful of portugese people that the lyrics of this song are very difficult to translate well into english because he uses a lot of words that have no english equivalent (like “saudade”, for example)

No, the problem with the translation is not the words but the meaning of the lyrics. It’s not entirely obvious the meaning of the song therefore a literal translation could be off. Still I feel it is indeed about saudade / longing for someone who died and maybe about getting to live after that.

There are layers to the lyrics, as in poetry, a verse can be about a thing and the next verse about something else!
This one is about a longing that can’t be bared and so he says: he’s breaking his phone to call heaven. Then it’s about a way to build yourself again, “breaking your phone” as a way to reconnect with your self again and trusting your self-estimat: “If I break my phone, it’s only mine to break!”
So it’s a journey of feelings, not just a concept.

Like someone else already said: The strength of Telemoveis is in the soundscape it creates. The ridiculous costumes and frenetic movement from Conan and the dancer only distract from the audio experience and as a consequence seriously weaken the piece.

Every year I’m supporting the class quality Portugal is sending. Before Salvador’s victory I always stood up for the Portuguese entries even when they were horribly underrated… but apparently they lost their charm. I’m sorry Portugal, you’re in my bottom 3. This is just not good at all and I’m really sorry for that, because I always enjoy your entries… just not this time.

The music is great but the singing part is awful. Can’t watch this performance without cringing and making wtf face all the time.

Dear Portugal
You know you’re stuffed when I like you less than I do Spain. And everyone knows how critic I am with Spain.
I like weird, I loved Lordi and Do-Re-Dos, but I liked weird when it looks like something Larry Rickard would write. This looks like a weird acid trip.
If you need me, I’m camping with Italy Hungary and Norway.

Conan is also very good, although my opinion is certainly biased. There’s no reason to put someone down to put someone else up.
I loved DoReDos traditional sounds and comedy act.
And the name reminds me of Doritos. I like Doritos. ?

I don’t value staging over the song. The song is terrible imo, so there is no amount of creative staging that can save it.

Someone that liked Do-Re-Dos doesn’t have much credibility. So, you little ridiculuos letter can go directly to the bin

Oh, it’s just another “very special, daring and exploring artist” which became a synonym for “I don’t know to sing, dance or play anything but people on internet told me that I should be musician”…. Can we please go back in era when having a decent song was good enough and not everyone was trying desperately to be shocking?

Eurovision should be all about the music, quality of song and vocal interpretation, not a personality contest, parade of semi-talented, attention wanting “artists” who are putting god knows what on themselves just to be noticed.

Except the SONG and his SINGING was what pulled people to like and even hype it before he even showed his act at the national final.

Oh please, what song and what singing? It’s just a sound of cat having birth with some uh’s and oh’s every once in a while. Fans love it because of his appearance. It’s plain and simple.

In a real music, you can be eccentric for all you want, but you must have a quality to support it (like Lady Gaga or Prince). This is just very weird guy with a male pole dancer who throws himself around.

Fans were already behind it when it was only the audio file. Many people were even disappointed with the stage performance when it came time for it. Juries included. (I’d say that’s why they gave him a low score in the semis – they wanted more from him.)

Disliking an entry is completely valid, for whatever reason it may be… But fact is, the fans started liking it when it was just the sound, no visuals. At least none besides the dude’s still face as the video’s background.

Eurovision should be… And then 2018 happened., with those top two. Never the less, our song has much more feeling than those and is more artistic.
