Wish come true: Malta's Janice Mangion releases new single "Xewqti"

She’s the Maltese star with a hunger for Eurovision. Her singles “Kewkba” and “Warda” have topped the local iTunes charts and secured her a spot as one of the island’s most sought after stars. In 2017, she narrowly missed out on representing her country at Eurovision. Last year, she impressed judges and fans during The X-Factor bootcamp. This week, Janice Mangion released her new single “Xewqti”, which means “My Wish” in English.

“Xewqti” is an awareness-raising radio-pop number sung beautifully in Maltese. The song is composed by Cyprian Cassar and lyricist Emil Calleja Bayliss, and marks their third collaboration. This time, their song is packed with a message — the devastating effects of cyber bullying and social media have changed the way young people experience hate. The spotlight here is on the issue, and the largely silhouetted music video is an added testament to its importance. Cyber bullying is real and accounts for many mental health problems that teenagers face.

Speaking exclusively to wiwibloggs, Janice explains:

“I approached Emil with the idea of “Xewqti” having noticed a lot of negative comments on various mediums of social media, from people who hide behind a screen.

Each and every person is unique and different in his or her own way. We must respect everyone because we are all special. This is the message of the song “Xewqti”. I really hope that one day, the world will be better. Remember, never let anyone silence you, let your voice be heard.”
