We haven’t heard much from Azerbaijan this season. But the former Eurovision winners have finally given fans a tiny teaser of their entry for Tel Aviv. And this year they seem to be headed in an avant-garde style for Eurovision 2019.
Prior to the release of their act this Friday, March 8, the Azerbaijani federation has dropped this stunning teaser of what’s supposedly their music video.
Lots of water, a very Lisbon 2018 jellyfish, people painted in gold, neon and bright colours, and an electronic-pop base infused of ethnic vibes is what we find in this teaser of just 20 seconds.
The words “She is a killer” are the last ones we see on screen. What does that mean? Is it the name of the song? Is it a description of the artist? Could Aisel be coming back for vengeance?
What we know about Azerbaijan 2019
Sadly, it doesn’t look like the “X My Heart” singer will be trying to come back like Anna Bergendahl in Sweden. Aisel is not among the four shortlisted acts 2019.
As the Azerbaijani Head of Delegation, Husniye Maharramova, confirmed in early February, those four singers are Tofiq Haciyev, Leman Dadasheva, Samira Efendi and fan favourite Chingiz Mustafayev.
Chingiz’s name emerged in a since-deleted Facebook post from INFE Azerbaijan. He’s a singer-songwriter and guitarist.
Chingiz got his start in 2007 at the age of 16 when he won the seventh edition of the popular talent show Yeni Ulduz (New Star). In 2013 he represented Azerbaijan in the prestigious New Wave competition, where he duetted with Russian Eurovision star Polina Gagarina.
So is the teaser setting up a music video starring Chingiz? Does the “she is a killer” line suggest he’ll be singing about a woman?
Or does the line refer to the artist. In that case, it suggests either one of the two female candidates, Leman or Efendi, has been selected. Do either of these ladies have a killer instinct?
Nevertheless, all we can do so far is wishful thinking until the 8th. On Friday, Azerbaijan’s act will drop and we will finally get to experience their their entry for 2019.
Will Azerbaijan be back in the final in 2019? What do you expect from the Azerbaijani entry? Can they be a contender? What do you think of the teaser? Sound off in the comment section below!
I liked Georgia last year even though it was an estoeris genre and not popular with the public but this year their song is a tuneless mess, Armenia last year was boring, best song they had was lovewave, Azerbaijan last year had awful lyrics and dated production, Skeletons was a great song.
Come on, Azerbaijan… don’t let us down: We’re running short of ‘wooow’ entries this year.
Visually convinces me. Can’t wait for Friday.
Wake me up when the whole song is out…
I expect them to come back fighting after their NQ last year in Lisbon.
As long as there is no cringed, non-sendical lyrics like “Luna moon me up”.
Hopefully they learned their lesson.
I expect great things.
Sound like Melfest reject meets with azeri sounds
How can an 18 second instrumental teaser sound like a Melfest reject? Lmao…try again. Azerbaijan is gonna serve quality this year and, based on how bad Mello was this year, will probably best Sweden!
Apparently the composer is Azeri again – the guy who made “Skeletons” in 2017. Plus I think that it’s going to be better than any song competed in Melodifestivalen this year. It was a very weak year.
This sound promising but I’m not getting my hopes up. Remember Serbia 2017 and Croatia last year? Their teasers were so good but the songs were just ok
I was thinking the same thing…eek
Also Armenia 2017 teaser
Promising. “Skeletons” was a very positive surprise in 2017. I think tis one is going the same way. Really looking forward to it.
I would understand this teaser if it dropped like, last month, but two days before the release. It just seems a little pointless and dramatic. Anyway, can’t say I’m not intrigued.
This trend of dropping (useless) teasers and dragging the suspense until the very last minute is getting a little ridiculous. It’s a song contest, guys, no less, but no more. Just give us the song already!
This said, I’m rather curious about this one. Please let it be good!
Best will be if all songs can be listen just day before ESC semi-finals!!!
It’s impossible to say something based on this teaser. But I have read that the composer is the same Azeri composer (Isa Melikov) who made “Skeletons” and I LOVED “Skeletons”!! Now I expect something really good from Azerbaijan. 😀
Yeah, Skeletons was EPIC, pretty unusual for the average Azerbaijani entries.
Don’t Forget to say always “low, average, great songs personal to me” 🙂
Looks promising! Definitely not going to be a ballad so i’m good with it so far.
Judging by the photo in the lower left corner, I think the singer will be Samira Efendi. I’m excited!
This is not Maruv that plenty of people are talking about, sadly.
Why would Maruv represent Azerbaijan though? Lol. Azerbaijan had auditions for singers months ago and they chose 4 of them last month.
Like I said, “plenty of people that talked about this”. I’m just referencing what others were saying about Maruv representing Azerbaijan.
Just for the bant?
It seems we have teasers for everything these days, but this is one of the few that got me interested. Please don’t disappoint me, Azerbaijan.
“She is a killer” !? I bet Azerbaijan is gonna sending English song again !!! What I want for Eurovision is an Azeri language entry not this creepy thing!
…so, can we maybe get a little bit in Azeri this time? Pop music sounds pretty good in Azeri, not gonna lie.
OMG yes please!!!!
I wasn’t particularly impressed with Azerbaijan last year, it was such and underwhealming entry that I thought it was going to come back strong for this year, but this snippet just ignited my desire to see it full. This could really be a banger but I’ll be more happy if the singer turns out to be male, I can’t be bothered if it’s a female but I haven’t seen anything that experimental from a Male vocalist who that would ensure the entry will be amazing. Anyways please make sure the guy/girl can hold the notes live, please.
Yeah, x my heart was definitely not Azerbaijan’s best entry, and it flopped for a reason. Let’s hope this entry is a real firework.
Maarch 8 is only few days. Let’s wait.
In Lithuania March 8 – is the day of Womans. 🙂
I think they should release the teasers earlier and not days before the dateline but that’s OK…. I’m intrigued, nevertheless.
Ganja 2020?
Nice try Azerbaijan, but you already lost all your fire to our holy queen TAMTA! TAMTA-REPLAY!!! AMAZING LISTEN TO IT SHE WILL WIN AND DO IT!!! CYRPUS FIRST WINNER EVER!!! SHES A WINNER BABY
Serbian fan – check
Cypriot fan – check
What’s next, Croatia?
That being said… our holy king of baldness, SERHAT! SAN MARINO THE BEST! WE WILL WIN FOR SURE!!! #serHAT #sanmarino2020
YEAH BABY! SAN MARINO 2020 LET’S GOOOOO!!!
Cyprus song is dreadful this year
You’ve got my attention, Azerbaijan. I already love the cinematography, though those jellyfish remind me of ESC 2018 design.
I can tell already from this 20 seconds snipet that this won’t be any good. It just won’t. Even less competition for Nevena now. This really is the year of Serbian victory. Move aside Azerbaijan! We have the best song and you just can’t compete! I just can’t wait when that moment in Tel Aviv in May when Nevena gets her rightful crown as the queen of Eurovision and the 2019 winner.
WTF is this comment? lol
Newsflash: NOBODY CARES
A serhat victory will be more possible than this
Calm down, Nostradamus.
I love Nevena but stop making this comment that will do more harm on her than benefit her.
I am from Serbia and as much as i love Nevena i can say that we will hardly get in the top 15…she is great and all but the song needs a serious work…
2009: Aysel
2018: Aisel
Confusing, I know.
I loved Azerbaijan last year but yeah, hopefully they’ll get back to doing what they do best…ethno-pop!
In that order next time Aisel maybe Elizade that time will represent Azerbaijan just in 2027 😀 hope so it’s just order and We will see Aisel Elizade coming soon in few next years!
Intrigued!
