As D-moll, they convincingly won last month’s Montevizija 2019. Now, following a slight rebrand, D mol has dropped the overhauled version of “Heaven” — Montenegro’s song for Eurovision 2019.
The changes are instantly noticeable. The revamped “Heaven” takes a much more Balkan approach, arguably the most out of all the countries competing this year.
Its original simplistic approach is abandoned in favour of rich ethnic production. There are fabulous flares of folk instruments throughout.
Each vocalist has their own time to shine across the verses. The group harmonies provide a bigger punch, avoiding the “wall of sound” effect. D mol went from a group to an ensemble, y’all!
D mol “Heaven” (Official music video) / Revamp
The music video plays up to Montenegro’s signature style: showcasing beautiful landscapes, nature shots and pristine beaches. It sells every inch of the great looking land. Who’s up for a layover in Podgorica post Tel Aviv?
Montenegro at Eurovision 2019
Montenegro selected “Heaven “after a national final which included two rounds of voting and multiple sets of juries . After a duel against runner-up “Nevinost”, the vocal group won with 62% of the popular vote. It has been hard work since then, between the revamp and the confirmation of their appearance at Eurovision In Concert on 6 April.
Montenegro will perform in the first half of the semi-final one on 14 May. They will vie for one of ten grand final spots. They’re hoping to qualify for the first time since 2015.
What do you think? Do you like the new version of “Heaven”? Do you think it has a shot to qualify? Let us know in the comments below.
The instrumental they added sounds a lot like the intro of Lauv’s ‘I Like Me Better’ — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7fzkqLozwA —
I don’t like the song at all, but the scenery in the video is AMAZING. IS THIS MONTENEGRO!? If so, I wanna visit so badly.
it is Montenegro yes, i liked the song already before, but this revamp has made it better 🙂
hmmm much better than before
I think the revamp was a little botched. “Heaven” needed to be cleaned up musically, and not totally Balkanized. It really only needed the piano and the percussion, which gave the original version a music box-like charm.
I want to visit there one day. Hopefully I will meet a group of music students. 😀
So, they have listened to Petra & Måns’s “love, love, peace, peace” and added an old man playing the montenegrin version of a Swedish “Qvinabuska” (or however yo want to spell that).
But there was just no way to fix this song…
Why you dont react for albania revamp?
I said before that I didn’t think a revamp could save it and sadly I stick to that. But they put a lot of effort on improving it and they achieved some things: the beginning and the ending are much better and the ethnic sounds made it more lively and vibrant. Then comes that moment where they try a lot of different things at the same time, including a key change, and they lost me (forever).
Maybe it’s just me, I do think the guy on the left in the beach photo is one of the cutest guys this year, perhaps even better than Switzerland and the Netherlands…but he will unfortunately go unnoticed.
and he has a beautiful unique voice
What is this, handsomecontest?
It is certainly a song contest, but wouldn’t it be nice if the song is good AND the singer is more pleasant-looking?
But which one is Merel?
My guilty pleasure this year.
I like to listen to it and I’m not even feeling guilty about it. 🙂
I appreciate the ethnic sounds, but this song can’t be saved by a new production. It is just bad.
I’m sorry but I laughed so much watching this video. Did they get the same hand choreographer as Michael Rice for the UK? Calm it down! The white outfit on the beach section looks like parody. And the song……. yeikes.
And very good it is, too – what a shame they didn’t sort it out straight away !
How did they have managed to make it even worse than before? I can’t. It’s a last place in a semi for sure.
Before someone asks…
No, the name change does not reflect the key change in the song. 😀
I am seemingly one of the few people who likes this entry. I don’t know exactly why, I just find it sweet. It also does evoke memories of my own music education, which was probably the happiest time of my life. 🙂
This one is like a music project that improves with each edit. The re-vamp has gone in a totally different direction to what I personally would have done with the song, and this is a pleasant surprise to me. Of course I know this will go the way of Ari Olafsson, but I still like the effort.
I like this song a lot, too. It’s really sweet and lovely. But I agree that it’s all wrong for Eurovision. Maybe they should’ve arranged it to feature just two singers, with the others as the choir. As much as I like the song, right now they look escapees from a showtune church camp. Uncomfortable.
Ngl I actually like it, much better than the original version
South Montenegro in action
This is a bit of an Ari Olafson case, there is no hope.
I prefered Our Choice. It took about ten times to hear the chorus of Heaven to even remember it. Honestly, when I did some early re-caps in my head, MIHAI’s last year entry of the same name started instead. It was not even one of my winners of SN 2018. That’s a really bad sign. And no, revamp didn’t elevate it much. Sorry, not sorry.
Ari had an advantage: the audience had time to get familiar with him. In this entry, there are many people singing. When you get used to a vocalist, a different one comes. Also, the more different people singing, the bigger are the chances someone’s singing style will make it less pleasant for you (for me, it’s the first guy who sings).
“Our Choice” sounded a whole lot better in Icelandic. That should have been Ari’s song for last year’s Icelandic selection final.
There are certain parts that sound a bit too overproduced that could potentially drown out the group’s voice during a live perofrmance but hopefully that can be fixed.
I must say, they’re trying to feel the lyrics with their respective individual shots in the MV with those hand and arm gestures.
I really like it. Does that make me a bad person?
No, of course not. Be more self-confident. 🙂
Not at all! It just makes you a person with a bad taste
And that comment makes you a musical snob, Laia. What a pity for you.
no definitely not, i find this song so underrated
it’s really catchy, good fun to listen to
they have that fun vibe what DoReDos had last year for Moldova, and hopefully this can surprise, i am so hoping for a miracle for these guys cause i want to vote for them in final
Wtf, D-Moll sounds better than D-Mol
Say na na na.
I didn’t even notice the name *change*!
