He’s the comeback kid who impressed both juries and viewers at Melodifestivalen 2019.

And now John Lundvik is set to sing “Too Late For Love” on stage for Sweden at Eurovision.

All eyes are on whether he can capture an elusive seventh victory for Sweden and in the process match Ireland’s record for most wins.

The song is now one of the bookmakers favorites and has also reached the top of the Swedish charts.

Lundvik co-wrote the track along with Anderz Whretov and Andreas “Stone” Johansson. On stage, he’ll be joined by a choir consisting of Paris Renita, Loulou Lamotte, Ashley Haynes and Dinah Yonas Manna.

What do the “Too Late For Love” lyrics mean?

Speaking about the song, Lundvik has suggested the answer is in its name.

“The title says Too Late For Love, but what I want to say is that it’s really never too late for love. I dare to believe somewhere, in my naive heart, that everything can be solved with love.”

The song itself seems to tell the story of a man who wants to save a faltering relationship. He repeatedly asks if it’s too late for love to save the day.

“I wanna know, is it too late for love?” he asks. “I can’t take no more, is it?”

At times his pleas turn to fantasy — he’s explaining what he could do for that special someone, but also living out his ideal scenario through words: “I could be the sun that lights your dark, and maybe I would lit your world with just one spark, I could make it burn for you and me.”

Please note that lit is in fact the correct lyric, even if it is grammatically questionable.

This won’t be his only song in the competition, as he’s also one of the composers of Micheal Rice’s “Bigger Than Us”, representing the United Kingdom.

Too Late For Love lyrics — John Lundvik

Hey, how’ve you been?
I wonder, do you ever think of me?
Say, am I wrong
To wonder if it could be you and me?

Is it too late for love?
Mhm
Is it too late for love?
I wanna know
Is it too late for love?
I can’t take no more
Is it?

I could be the sun that lights your dark
And maybe I would lit your world with just one spark
I could make it burn for you and me
If I could be there
I would be there
Hear me
I could be the sun that lights your dark
(Oh, is it too late for love?)
(Is it too late for love?)
Hear me
I could make it burn for you and me

Days came and went
But nothing ever really felt the same
But you left a space
Where everything reminds me of your face

Is it too late for love?
Mhm
Is it too late for love?
I wanna know

I could be the sun that lights your dark
And maybe I would lit your world with just one spark
I could make it burn for you and me
If I could be there
I would be there
Hear me
I could be the sun that lights your dark
(Oh, is it too late for love?)
(Is it too late for love?)
Hear me
I could make it burn for you and me
(Oh, is it too late for love?)
(Is it too late for love?)

We could be a storm that rages on
And maybe we would own the ocean carry on

I could be the sun that lights your dark
And maybe I would lit your world with just one spark
I could make it burn for you and me
If I could be there
I would be there
Hear me
I could be the sun that lights your dark
(Oh, is it too late for love?)
Is it too late for love? (Is it too late for love?)
It isn’t is too late for love?
Is it?

Give this song to a lesser known country I ESC, and it no one will be talking about this mediocre piece.

Always overrated. Every single year.

Here is a sweed whithout good english that hasn’t notised the think some of you criticised about grammar etc. in the text, and I don’t think most viewers are that good in English. I think other sweeds love the song because of the positive emotions they get. And I hope there are a lot of people that share that positive emotion . The mesning of the song is delivered by Johns positivity in my opinion. By his eyes and smile. It wasn’t my first choice in melfest but I really get get happy by the song. And I think that… Read more »

He’s a competent English speaker though, having spent his early years in the UK. Having grown up though in Sweden, his Swedish accent have probably altered his English speaking to sound more neutral.

Well, constellation prize isnt about getting someone as a consolation prize either? He sings about getting the prize that was written in the stars all along or whatever. But I guess you have to be smart enough to not take everything to litteral to understand things like that sometimes

I agree with @dutchie, lyrics are not the most important thing in classic pop song, so this overanalyzing lyrics in pop songs is kinda funny to me. Catchy melody, memorable hook, likeable performer are important things in pop song. If you want good lyrics, then better see rock, indie or rap artists.

It’s also part of Swedish songwriters’ success that they don’t really bother with 100% correct English. ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Base, and of course every Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears hit: some of the lyrics don’t make sense, but the sound and the flow is all that matters.

I think there’s too much negative scent regarding Sweden at Eurovision. It’s a great song, every time I hear it it gives me a positive energy, motivates to work and I often catch myself unconsiously singing “is it too late for love?” in the shower. John is charismatic and likable dude and those backing singers sell everything. Lyrics’ premise is also very nice and excellently complimented by music and staging. John makes me believe in words he’s singing – you see all the emotions on his face, in his moves and voice, which makes me think he’s gonna get big… Read more »

Skiealko. Tack.
It’s nice to read something positive about Sweden. Agree. The song makes you happy the same way Lena did when she won. I don’t mean that I think the song is the best. But a good song that deserves respect. And John is fantastic

thank u for explaining the meaning of the song, the lyrics are just so mysterious n complex that it would’ve been impossible to guess it was about love 😮

From the facts you didn’t need to know: 19 out of 41 songs this year contain the word “love” in any form or language. Guess which song has the biggest number of “loves” (and in 4 languages).

Hahaha. It’s so true. And it is also a very clever marketing strategy. 😉
It generates discussion. Is it right or is it wrong, and should the word be changed? Discussion equals promotion. I see right through it.

I love these lyrics. They mirror my current life events perfectly. Although when I asked the question “is it too late for love?”, the person just said “yes”. Sad.
But anyways, I still love this song.
N.B. I look forward to reading discussion on the word “lit”. 😀

I feel you Purple, I feel you! If it would never been too late for love, I would sit in Hamburg now, holding hands with the most beautiful man I have ever seen in my life and enjoying every second. I do enjoy my life ofc, I am really fine, but it is a pity, because I know my true character (not my artistic figure (!!!) “ESCFan2009”) and it would have fit really well, seriously and without joking!
