One is a ballad, the other a dancefloor banger.

But now Katerine Duska’s “Better Love” and Tamta’s “Replay” have something in common.

Greece and Cyprus top Eurovision 2019 Semi-Final 1 odds (accurate 17:19CET)

Eurovisi

They’re the favourites to win Eurovision 2019 Semi-Final 1 in a few weeks time in Tel Aviv.

Greece is now as low as 7/4 at some agencies, putting Katerine Duska in pole position to win Semi-Final 1 in May.

Tamta follows close behind. The Georgian-Greek star is as low as 5/2 at some agencies. That suggests bookies have confidence Cyprus can overcome the disadvantage of opening the show.

Iceland‘s Hatari round out the top three. Some bookmakers have them as low as 7/2, while others are more speculative.

Thereafter things widen out. Portugal‘s Conan Osiris is in fourth, with best odds for Portugal at 7/1 with SportingBet. The perceived divisiveness of his song “Telemoveis” may be a factor here.

Slovenia‘s Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl complete the top five. Slovenia is as low as 9/1 at SportingBet, but as high as 14/1 at others.

Belgium, Hungary, Australia, Estonia and Czech Republic round out the top ten. Their odds range from 14/1-33/1. That suggests bookies don’t have the same confidence in this cluster of candidates’ winning potential.

Semi-Final 1 Odds compared to Overall Eurovision odds

The bookies current top three also make the overall top ten odds to win.

They are in a different order though.

Iceland is sixth, Cyprus seventh and Greece eighth at time of publishing. Discrepancies between odds and eventual results are not uncommon. Some songs shine better in a smaller field, but may fade into the background in a bigger set-list.

Last year for example Norway’s Alexander Rybak won Semi-Final 2, but only placed 15th in the Grand Final.

NB: These are not odds to qualify, only odds for who will win the semi-final.

What do you make of the odds to win? Will Greece come out on top? Or do you think Tamta can take it? Let us know in the comments below!

The top 5 are probably safe. No other songs in this semi have a bigger following and pre-contest hype matters way more in the semis than in the final.
Out of all the “weirdo” songs, I’d worry about Australia: It isn’t exactly new at eurovision, it will contest with Iceland/Poland/Portugal in terms of jury points and the last few years haven’t been easy for Australia when it comes to public votes.

I don’t think Slovenia is safe. Also, Australia didn’t do well with the public in 2017 & 2018 because the songs were too bland, not because they aren’t in Europe.

Seems accurate. I think Poland might sneak in there too, really love their live performance. I wouldn’t worry much for Portugal. Haters gonna hate, but Spain and France are voting in this semifinal, and to a lesser extent Belgium too. It has an middle eastern vibe which will appeal to Israel, Cyprus, Greece, etc to sneak in some votes hopefully. And after decades being at the last places of the odds, we are just happy if we qualify for the semi final with a song that represent us. Good luck to everyone, I enjoy Cyprus and Greece and Slovenia the… Read more »

That’s what I feel too, the nordics country seems not understand the vibe of Telemoveis but they are a minority in this semi final and it’s Iceland that should be worried instead of Portugal. Like I said several days ago Portugal has more friendly voting than Iceland on this SF.

I still don’t know if juries would like Iceland, since of the spoken word issue. Cyprus and Greece might slay, or might just eh, depending on how they would bring their performance, but they will probably qualify. Hungary has a better chance at qualifying.

One of the main reason of the prediction is that Greece and Cyprus are in the same SF, thus exchanging the televotes.

Yes so switching 12 points is enough to be on the top. Lol.

Btw Greece and Cyprus aren’t the only neighboring countries doing this but people only complain about them.

Hm… I’m happy the odds are predicting a Czech qualification (a very underrated song which will for sure shine on the stage), but Poland and San Marino will qualify, no doubts. May be a bit biased for San Marino, but there’s no way Poland is going to fail: their song and their style really come alive on stage. Some might not like the studio version, but they will smash the stage live.

Too many songs following each other in the running order are predicted here… My guess would be to swap Portugal or Estonia for Poland. The second half is packed with so many good ones it’s hard to choose. But these 11 surely deserve it in my opinion!

Am I the only one who thinks that Hungary will finish top 5 in this semi? I think the top 5 in this semi will be Iceland, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary and Portugal or Australia. I have no idea how Slovenia will do, it delends on the televote but I think they’ll qualify.

I agree Greece’s song is a more universal one and could have a big appeal to the audience and the juries plus it is a great song,so if the staging is god then it will absolutely win the semifinal!

I don’t think many people at home care as much about lyrics. The Swiss lyrics are garbage and nobody cares. (Me included.) Listening for the first time barely anyone will figure out wether lyrics make sense or not… Except for very obvious cases. People at home didn’t care that they weren’t able to understand Melovin last year, so I don’t think they really pay attention.

I care a lot about Swiss lyrics being garbage. This is one of the reasons why I don’t see it winning. I think it is also why Fuego did not win, but Toy did.

Toy’s lyrics weren’t exactly philosophical either…. I mean “I’m not your toy, you stupid boy” “You’re stupid just like your smartphone” “I’m taking my Pikachu home”

Mr Vanilla Bean, that’s a massive shame that you don’t get Belgium’s lyrics. For me they are the most powerful in all the competition. It may because I had a personal reason to need to fight for something really badly, and whenever I hear those lyrics they make me cry. They capture a particular emotion so well.

You can dislike the song because he doesn’t quite sing it as well as he might, but please don’t dislike it because you don’t understand the lyrics – that just shows a lack of understanding on your part.

You are not looking hard enough or you have not had the personal experience. Either way, you shouldn’t go around criticising lyrics as gibberish when they mean a lot to some people. Stop hating please.

Greece, Cyprus and Iceland will probably be the top 3 of Semi 1. But I feel like Slovenia might end up much higher than many expect. Calm and quiet songs sometimes hold the most power. In the beginning I thought Estonia would easily qualify, but I’m not so sure anymore. I think Greece, Cyprus, Iceland, Slovenia and Portugal are quite safe. I also see Hungary and Australia qualifying. The remaining potential qualifiers are Belgium, Serbia, Poland, Estonia and the Czech Republic. (Sorry @Serhat our lord and savior, but I still don’t see it happening.) Two of these still have to… Read more »

The thing is I wouldn’t be shocked if either Iceland, Greece or Cyprus miss Top 3 in SF1 unlike Netherlands in SF2 for example. I don’t see any country safe.
