They say first the worst, second the best.

And today Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic took another shot at rehearsals at Eurovision 2019. Find out our reviews below.

Reactions to second rehearsals at Eurovision 2019: Poland, Slovenia and Czech Republic

Poland: Tulia with “Fire of Love (Pali sie)”

Earlier this week Tulia battled technical problems and in their second rehearsals the ladies from Poland had another false start. However, proving what professionals they are, they made up for it in successive runs. This has a mystical feeling that is not on show elsewhere in the running order. Their vocals sound fantastic and the use of the lazy susan transports you to another world. It is not the most kinetic of performances – likely a result of the intricate costumes they wear – however, this is memorable.

Slovenia: Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl with “Sebi”

Shades of blue, shades of the new. At Slovenia’s second rehearsal at Eurovision 2019, Zala Kralj & Gasper Santl nailed the intimacy that has become their calling card. In-ear problems troubled the first run through. There were new wider shots, but those tend to squander the intimacy between the couple. In a performance that is all about the connection between lovers, it seems a curious choice to play to the crowd. The galaxy backdrop is beautiful, but something between it and the feeling Slovenia is trying to convey does not quite match up.

Czech Republic: Lake Malawi with “Friend Of A Friend”

Unfortunately we had no feed in the press centre for this rehearsal, however our bloggers on the ground in the arena were making positive noises. The main note is that the band needs to channel their effervescent stage presence into a killer vocal. We love the enthusiasm from the jumping, but not at the expense of hearing the studio quality vocal we know they can deliver. No doubt Lake Malawi will have things locked down by dress rehearsals.

In his press conference, Albert addressed the “enthusiasm” criticism and said Lake Malawi are approaching the jury and televised performances differently. The jury show focus will be on vocal perfection, with enthusiastic elements unleashed in the live semi-final. And that divide and conquer approach could pay dividends.

Poland – Sounding a lot better. Still not sure about the visuals.
Slovenia – Confident in what they are doing. Bit worried that while other countries are getting better, they’ve kinda settled with what they have. Borderline qualifier.
Czech Rep – Still hoping there’s more to come in terms of their staging. It’s just not much, is it?

Poland: I love music from the beginning. Hates staging since I saw it. No improvements here (faces on the LED… please don´t!!)! And I’ve seen them with better outfitts.
Slovenia: again love the song but not a good stagging. It reminds me of alfred and amaia last year. There does not seem to be much truth in these couples. But is a good entry.
Czech Republic: Eurovision material. Not totally fan of the song but I like the vibe.

If you want Poland in the final, vote like hell for it if you are in any of the countries competing in semi final 1.

Poland – It’s good. Still not to my personal taste, but it’s good. 🙂
Slovenia – Very interesting that they have tried to change things up a bit. Nice to see creative direction. Let’s see where this goes.
Czech Republic – Cutey goodness. I understand why the key was lowered and how it has relaxed the performance. I am warming to this as it goes on.

Poland- I swear to god, if I see just one more time giant faces Houdek style on leds…. and those voices are annoying to me, sorry.
Czechia- can’t see appeal here at all, the most overrated entry in semi
Slovenia- well done.

Poland: everything looks very good. The costumes, the colors, the lighting, the singing, it’s all on point. Still don’t know how Europe will react to this, but the delegation should be proud.
Slovenia: I missed some intimacy, but this is a entry that will benefit from the nerves of performing live, because it will only accentuate their personal connection. It is what it is, you get or you feel cold about it. I get it.
Czechia: I can see both the juries and the televote falling for it. Good lighthearted fun with well thought staging.

Poland: It is a borderline qualifier. It will depend on the live performance on Tuesday.
Slovenia: Get a Spain 2018 vibes from this! Better song though.
Czech Republic: Really good but expected more colours!

Quick review #2:
Poland – the song is “Fire of Love” and the staging is fire as well, I’m digging it, it looks really cool, great energy
Slovenia – right as I expected it to be – intimate, low-key, it’s all about them, good job Slovenia
Czech Republic – joyful, fun, colorful, I guess the EBU is leaving the best bits for the live show

I am worried for Slovenia. Some of the boy’s facial expressions were a bit off putting in this clip. Maybe it will be better on the live running – this song is so intense that it makes it a fine line between getting the mood exactly right or coming across as a bit creepy and awkward. The song and staging is really good though – I want it to get through.

I’ve heard so many people comparing random entries (Spain 2018 or any ballad tbh) to Salvador Sobral, even though they have nothing in common with him. If you want to compare someone to his performance, it should be Slovenia this year. It’s about the intimacy.

Poland represents their country with etno – traditional song thís year in Eurovision. Unique song for this tournamet, but in my opinion, it is not understandable for Western Europe citizens and or fans of EV.
Personally i like it, but i live in Bulgaria and this kind of vibes are easily recognized for our music taste than for other Western Europe countries…
Good luck, i expect Poland in Grand Final!!!

Stupid idea maybe, but why can’t they choose who participates in which semi after all songs are revealed? I mean when you compare this half of the semi to the second half of the second semi its so unbalanced

The only way you could do this is if someone could invent a computer which could objectively decide what is a “good” song and what is a “bad” song. Whilst humans are involved, this will never be possible as everyone has such different views.

The Polish government is awful – but Polish people are not. And – as someone who understands Polish – I have absolutely no idea where you are imagining obnoxious nationalism in the song.
