Australia – Kate Miller-Heidke

She is the radiant songstress taking Australia to new heights at Eurovision 2019. In the lead-up to her performance on Tuesday, Kate Miller-Heidke has released her new song “Ernie”, dedicated to her son. Kate also made an appearance at the Australian Eurovision Party in Tel Aviv yesterday.

“Ernie” — Kate Miller-Heidke

The story of “Ernie” is a tale of the difficulties Kate faced following the birth of her son. She sings “I hope I don’t make too many mistakes”, sharing her insecurities about motherhood.

Kate sings about how the birth of Ernie changed her life. She says, “He landed like an alien from a distant, dark and liquid planet.” She reflects on how Ernie “turned this whole house upside down”, describing the profound impact Ernie had on her life.

Kate shares her worries as she sings “Is he only sleeping? Yes he is still breathing”. The song is a very personal tale yet the message and the emotions are universal.

Ernie didn’t make the trip to Israel and being apart from him for two and a half weeks is one of the hardest things Kate has had to do.

The prominent line from the song is “I can’t believe my luck”, which is repeated several times. Kate’s love for Ernie is undeniable and she finds the right words to describe her love.

Australian Eurovision Party 2019

Kate was also on hand to perform at the Australian Eurovision Party 2019 and our Deban, Sebastian, Antranig and Antony were on the scene to witness the magic. Artists from Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Poland were also there to mingle with the Aussies.

“Ernie” lyrics — Kate Miller-Heidke

Ernie sleeps and I’m awake
Does he see me, does he see me
Among the shifting shapes?
The day is tired, and so am I
Still I can’t believe my luck

I hope I don’t make too many mistakes
He fell off, fell off the chair
The second I looked away
Just about anything makes me cry
Still I can’t believe my luck

You’re a chubby little pudge ball
Half animal, half Cupid
You know next to nothing
Still you make me feel so stupid

And I can’t believe my luck
I am yours and you are mine
Oh I’ve really come unstuck this time
I can’t believe my luck

He landed like an alien
From a distant, dark and liquid planet
Turned this whole house upside down
We will never be the same now

But I don’t trust my own memory
Who you were last week – it’s blurry already
And I’m so happy watching you dance today
But by tomorrow you’ll be changed again

And I’m no good at letting go
Won’t you stay the way you are?
It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever known
And I can’t believe my luck

Is he only sleeping?
Yes he is still breathing
Is he only sleeping?
Yes he is still breathing
Is he only…? Is he only…? Yes he is still

Ernie sleeps and I’m awake

Touching, and this is the same person that invented Zero Gravity. I will learn how to write like Kate.

I had depression too, between 1999 and 2001. I felt paralyzed, and my parents thought I’m just lazy.
