Who run the world? Girls

And the same energy of that song pervaded S!sters performance in Germany’s first rehearsal at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019.

“Sister” is about women realising they stand stronger together and shouldn’t tear each other down and the staging is built around that idea.

The girls start at opposite sides of the stage, but walk together during the second verse and perform the rest of the song together.

Germany has a great shot where the camera pans around them, before zooming out to reveal the girls stood against a backdrop of different images of women.

They have widened the appeal of the message, crafted something compelling and elevated their offering.

Germany has some camera work to fix, but otherwise the S!sters are in a good spot.

In the wiwibloggs reaction video they were so positive about it and praised it. I believed them that the staging was an improvement, because usually they know what works. I have never liked stagings with photos in the background and thanks to Sleimok we know where they come from… And this is indeed weird that they changed the message from sisters to female lovers. I was no real fan of their voices and of the song, but I support the message that women often instead of promoting each other are “stutenbissig” (catty, bitchy). Imho we as women too often look for… Read more »

Because if it’s something about LGBT, it’s always “amazing”. Always :/

What if those pics are dummy pics and save the “real” pics for the show? I wonder. I am not a fan of the staging so far. Man (sisters), keep the platform. But I don’t know how much input those girls have into the staging. It’s them who perform, so they should have some input. I don’t like acts put together for Eurovision.

Phew! This was the staging I was worried N.Macedonia were going to go for. Thankfully, S!sters used up all the bad taste before Tamara could get a look in. In this rehearsal, they didn’t even sound that good either. Starting to look a lot like a last place in the final.

As Purple Mask, Sabrina and several others noted, North Macedonia does the feminist message better. Obviously, because they have a feminist message to begin with. I said many times now, Germany has a song about siblings / friends (who just happen to be female) and decided to keep promoting it as a feminist (and apparently, lesbian) anthem. So, good riddance. It’s on you, Germany!

Feminism is about equal rights for women and men, which is a legislation issue. Feminism strives for women having equal rights as men. The way I see it, “Proud” is an empowerment song for women and touches on cultural issues as opposed to “rights”. “Sisterhood” also touches on cultural issues, not on “rights”. Legislation is usually more progressive than culture. It’s just #myopinion.

This is why for the millionth time. Aly Ryan or Lilly Among Clouds should have won! Germany just why. why you made the worst choice ever?

That’s a major letdown for me. The rotating platform was taken away, but we didn’t get anything in return. The staging screams “no effort”, the atmosphere was ruined by the Shutterstock photos, and the message made unclear by the lesbian theme (don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the lesbian topic presence in medias and television, I’m a big LGBT ally, i’m just upset that the truly unique message of women’s sisterhood gets lost as a result).

Well someone used Google Images:)
North Macedonia does the same message better. I wanted Germany to do well after last year but I’m not sure..

This song keeps saying “sisters” but….the background photos make me think “girlfriends” more than anything…

Once again a generic song paried with non-existent staging. Welcome back to the bottom 5, Germany… And I can’t believe that they really used random stock images for this:comment imagecomment image

They could had asked for fans to send pics, they could had used the budget to take nice pictures, but no… Not even mentioning that adding lesbian couples can generate a distortion to the sorority message, as Tessa pointed here in the comments.

They did it last year, asked fans to send pics and it worked. The song was much, much, much, much better too.

Why do they think it’s a good idea to use images of lesbian couples for a song that is supposed to be about sisters? That makes it so weird and… well… basically a song about incest lol.

I wasn’t even a fan of the rotating platform, but they decided to stage it in the most basic possible way. On the other hand, now we’ll know them as individuals before they join each other on the stage, which adds to the narrative (though, it’s also very basic staging). They look gorgeous, sound good, but in terms of message I agree with Purple Mask, North Macedonia has the edge here.

NDR: *Think that this Sister stuff is a brilliant idea*
German ESC Fans: I’m tired, tired of always losing…

(Can we at least get some sort of award because we’re literally foreshawdoing our result in the lyrics?)

Sure, but note that Montenegro said “falling” a couple of times and Roko’s Croatian part “svijetu nisi dužan ti ništa donijeti”, translates into “you owe nothing to the world”. Also, doesn’t Like It have a line about empty words? 🙂

About the photos, last year’s Germany were about fathers, this year about sisters. Really? So much “inspiration” was “provided” last year. Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Cyprus. Obvious and ridiculous.

Next year we’ll send Angela Merkel as the uniting mother of Europe aka Mutti – The victory is ours!

That’s right. Father, sisters, Mutti – the short for Mutter (mother in German). Russia did it with the grandmothers in 2012. We will need to bring on brothers and grandfathers too.

North Macedonia does this message better.
Time for a re-think, IMO. Sorry, sisters 🙁

The pictures showing in the background seem confusing to me. If two females are in a relationship together (assuming that’s what the pictures were trying to show) it’s kind of logical they’re supporting each other, right? How does that correlate with a message of women supporting women and not tearing each other down?

So they sat in a table and thought ok we got the song and the singers, just throw them on stage and have some pictures in the background…… Bottom 5 (especially in televoting) is more than obvious…
