Greece’s Katerine Duska performed with fencers and acrobats. Australia’s Kate Miller-Heidke sang while spinning through space on a stick. And after the confetti had settled, both women were among the 10 qualifiers from Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2019.
Eurovision 2019: Semi-Final 1 Qualifiers
- Greece: Katerine Duska with “Better Love“
- Belarus: ZENA with “Like It“
- Serbia: Nevena Bozovic with “Kruna“
- Cyprus: Tamta with “Replay“
- Estonia: Victor Crone with “Storm“
- Czech Republic: Lake Malawi with “Friend Of A Friend“
- Australia: Kate Miller-Heidke with “Zero Gravity“
- Iceland: Hatari with “Hatrið mun sigra“
- San Marino: Serhat with “Say Na Na Na“
- Slovenia: Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl with “Sebi“
Eurovision 2019: Semi-Final 1 Non-Qualifiers
- Portugal: Conan Osiris with “Telemoveis“
- Hungary: Joci Pápai with “Az én apám“
- Belgium: Eliot with “Wake Up“
- Poland: Tulia with “Fire of Love“
- Georgia: Oto Nemsadze with “Keep On Going“
- Finland: Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman with “Look Away“
- Montenegro: D Mol with “Heaven“
The voting results presented a number of surprises. For the first time since its Eurovision comeback in 2011, Hungary has failed to qualify for the final. It’s a big comedown for Joci Pápai who secured the country one of its best ever results on his last outing in 2017.
Another qualification streak ended for Belgian’s Wallonian broadcaster RTBF. The country swaps between Flemish and Wallonian networks every other year, and this is the first time since 2011 that the Walloons have stayed in the semis.
But perhaps the biggest shock of the night was Portugal. Conan Osíris was a firm favourite among the fan community, but his eccentricities failed to connect with the wider viewing public.
However, where there are shock non-qualifiers there must also be surprise finalists. The biggest surprise is perhaps San Marino’s Serhat. He narrowly missed out on the final in 2016, but tonight he secured the microstate only its second ever grand final appearance.
Did your favourite make it through? Who was done wrong? And who is going to make the biggest impact in Lisbon on Saturday?

If the people wants see Portugal in the final i think the people should do a peticion.??
I”m portuguese and i so corious how many points Conan will get at the final if he performs

Back to 1SF press conference…
Today, Sergey was complaining about air conditioning. (which I understand as he has to keep his voice).
Will you perform your “hate” on Segey just the same as you treated those Slovenians, when they mentioned an issue with air conditioning??
Only Australia deserved to advance, the rest were mediocre to abysmal – https://www.americaloveseurovision.com/2019/05/the-16-crimes-of-the-first-semi-final.html
Tulia pali sie underestimated 🙁
Only politically correct songs go through to the Grand Final. Eurovision is losing credibility. It is backwards. No more hope.
Eurovision is becoming a pop idol show. The songs with strong character are losing for those that are very generic. And to make it worse, the artists that passed to the final are not that good.
Poland Portugal and Hungary underestimated 🙁
So before semi 1 I felt quite alone in enjoying Australia’s song. Opera is not the safest card in Eurovision. After an astonishing performance I have a strong feeling they’ll end up REALLY well, like top 3/winning the contest. Anyone who did not like the song before and does do now?
I always liked the song and it was in my personal Top 10, but after seeing the performance on Tuesday I like it even more now and I genuinely think that it is in contention to win. I still think The Netherlands is winning, but if there is any other country that is going to challenge them it’s Australia.
It was my #1 from the very beginning and everyone said: “huh?” 😀 😀 Kate is defo the only one who can beat Duncan. I adore both of them 🙂
OK so everyone until the semi final was saying that Greece is the winner of the semi final, that it deserves to go through and end up on top 10 or even top 5 and the same about cyprus and san marino but now that these countries are through and portugal didnt make it youre all butthurt? Guys grow up and stick to an opinion and dont change it because it doesnt fit you anymore. I know how it feels when your country stays at the semis but come on, portugal was so bad in the semi. The act at… Read more »
I meant it qualifies thanks to the staging. Also I made so many mistakes because i I’m typing fast and I’m pissed off by your double standards
Except Australia’s song is actually good.
I wasn’t so impressed by Greece tbh and don’t like her style of singing
Finally someone said that. Can’t believe that noone notices how bad she sang?! Greek entry is emperor new clothes
greece sang bad?! i’m gasping just from reading this. i can’t imagine in what world katharine’s singing is bad. she was flawless, hit every note perfectly and it’s not an easy song to sing
Oh yeah, Katharine´s vocals were mediocre and at some times really bad.
Duskas voice was not good at all, i was surprised she qualified tbh…
Who says that? Oh yeah, the same people who said Australia won’t qualify before they saw the staging. Come one, there were better songs like Poland and Portugal.
I’ve rewatched the finalists present on the first semi and have some (hopefully) constructive notes about staging (I won’t address vocal issues, but I’ve seen 3 problematic performances): Cyprus – I haven’t noticed before, but Jo is right, there are a bunch of little mistakes here, the camera is constantly a little behind what’s going on. The replay effect is unnecessary. Slovenia – they seem too aware of their movements, it’s clear when they have to look to a different camera and when Casper has a free hand. Czechia – I wouldn’t change a thing. Slick as hell. Belarus –… Read more »
Cant believe Goddess Katerine delivers such a stunning, aetherial performance and fans are moaning in this comment section talking about dissapointment. Camera angles are not Katerines or the greek teams fault, theyve been trying to get them right with the organisers but they suck at it. Still, Katerines performance is so different to everything else this year. I really love everything about it. In the sea of silly effects, Katerine transfers you in a mystical fairytale world.
Eurovision fans, if you cant appreciate art, you deserve performances like Toy
I think she was the best last night and probably won the semi.
yes…after Australia, Iceland, Czech and Cyprus (at least)…maybe was the best
Goddess ? What else we’ve to listen… She looked so nervous, amateurish, without winning vibes. Without even a small smile on camera, with pain expressions in her face and instability in her vocals in the first half of the song. Bad directoring (we saw dancers to run in order to catch the camera…we saw Katerine to walk on the right side and the tv screen on the centre etc) and bad sound (almost for all entries). So bad tv result…almost tragic. I believe that Greek entry passed 5th or 6th in the final. A song with a potential for top5…will… Read more »
I agree. She was nervous. The vocals were not good. And the directoring was really weak.
Performance was ridiculous with those ladies with swords, they represent agressive greek fans if you say something against ”goddess” LOL
Totally agree with you, i think she became 6th or 7th in the semi, She is lucky that she don’t have to perform in Semi 2….
I am sad for Joci. I really wanted Hungary to qualify. His voice was really good on Tuesday, beautiful staging and moving song. Even though i don’t know the Hungarian language I felt its meaning . I have az en apam on my playlist. I really want to see Joci again on Eurovision song contest for a third time in the future.
Agree….but in esc 2019 ethnic songs have no change (false god…of esc…has decided to boost only silly pop without identity) !!!
Is it ever possible to express you opinion about what you really like without shamming the entries you don’t like? I enjoyed both of his entries and it’s a shame he didn’t make it to the final. He was in my top 10 for the first semi. But just because not every entry that made it to the final suits me, doesn’t mean I need to be all vocal about it. It’s a competition for the best song. Not the worst song. Over the years I’ve discovered serveral great musicians across Europe and more. And I can continue listen to… Read more »
You never know. No one expected last year’s German entry to finish in the top-half of the board, let alone 4th.

Hello, everyone! Please, join the petition! Not only for Portugal and Hungary but for all countries that suffered from injustice last night and to prevent more problems tomorrow and Saturday. Some people were unable to vote for their favorite countries. In some contries, a lot of people got the message “error” while calling to vote for their favorites. Their votes didn’t count!! All votes are important! Everyone has the right to vote!
https://www.change.org/p/eurovision-recount-eurovision-2019-first-semifinal
Puedo demostrar cómo mis votos a Portugal desde Barcekona fueron saboteado, solo conseguí votar 3 veces de las 20 que lo intente.
Escandaloso
Miguel you should send it to RTP in Portugal. The need proofs.
Sorry but every year somebody think that his favorite song was robbed. Portugal song was not just good enough for the final.
When people want to vote, they should be able to vote. I have a group of spanish friends that gather every year for Eurovision and they always vote for Portugal because of our friendship. This year, and after several attempts, only 2 of my friends were lucky with their voting, the other 6 didn´t get their vote delivered. So, if we are complaining it is because many of us know people who live abroad (portuguese diaspora or just foreign friends) who tried to vote and weren´t successful. And this is very frustrating….We know Conan is not eveyone´s cup of tea,… Read more »
Portugal wore PS colours with Arabic archs exploding in red. Do you think Israelis and EBU are stupid and blind? Forget it. Portugal is out of the competition but forever in our hearts
Sailing back to Aquilonia (that is, flying back to Lisbon) right now. I’m sure he will try again in 2 or 3 years.
I hate to say it, but you’re probably right. They are my #10 overall and was #14 overall on the bookies’ board Tuesday afternoon (after being top-10 for a considerable amount of time). Bookies have them 7th in the 2nd semi right now. So, they’re riding the razor’s edge right now.
Ha, ha Epic Conan at the wiwi jam finishing off his performance by adding a little “say na na na” at the end, throwing major shade, freaking love this guy!!!

Where is Portugal pleaseeeee?!!!!
Waving the flag of the occupied country with pride!
Maybe they should have kept the outfits they wore at the Festival da Cancao. My guess is that their stage performance got old over the weeks since, and they should have come to the ESC with something different.
They were making a statement, they were wearing an occupied territory’s flag colours, you dumbass.
Portugal, best performance of the semi-final.
So proud of Conan. So glad he´s Portuguese. Can´t wait for his new music.
“Adoro Bolos” is amazing.
Wearing the wrong colours in the most political Eurovision ever worked for Portugal after all. It was not a non-qualification, it was a boycott. Good job, Portugal!
Georgia and Portugal were strong.
Enjoy the Beyonce´s, Pitbull´s, Adele´s, Lady Gaga´s and whatever “pop song artists” that remain.
Only politically correct songs go through to the Grand Final. Eurovision is losing credibility
Free PS!!!!
So happy Serhat qualified. Many people will blame him but this man loves Eurovision, he assumes his own style, he manages to talk to a public that may be forgotten by some fans, he is full of positivity and sympathy, it’s OUR drunk uncle. It would have been so crual for him to go home after an in-ear issue. I mean, no excuse for singing off key but this year he showed during rehearsal (the second official clip) that he is not only a lazy crowner. And for his last Eurovision, he deserved to be granted a place in the… Read more »
I hope they adjust the mics. And the hosts. And the generic songs to come. Maybe in the next year?
I miss Måns Zelmerlöw and Petra Mede.
What? Estonia fake and YOUR uncle is OK? Belgium should’ve have qualified, not your dear uncle Serhat..
Eliot is lovely and his song is great. But he was maybe too young and didn’t have the power and the stage presence.
Come on, Estonia is not that good, Stig was more inspired last year. Nonetheless, good tribute to Avicii. Serhat has that retro vibes
Elsa and Trh are overly obsessed with Conan…. they should see a doctor, the really should 😉
I hate to say this but I thought we had a lot of weak presentations last night. Greece was off, no energy and no emotion…I don’t know..itwas weird. San Marino, catchy song and I am glad for them but Serhat was talking instead of singing. Slovenia…I never liked the song, and their presentation was kinda creepy….also Zana and Gasper were very rude in the press conference last night, Zana has the whole time a “I dont want to be here face”…she may be shy but there is a difference between being shy and being rude. So sad for Portugal and… Read more »
I totally agree. Crappy vocals from Greece and Cyprus.. and very low energy… I don´t understand the hype surrounding Australia. THE STICKS ARE VISIBLE. THE GRAVITY IS NOT ZERO WITH A STICK. And the lyrics are poor. Very poor.. Powerful vocals from Serbia but… singing in English in some parts… bone killer… Lake Malawi sounded like a song from Bruno Mars.. amateur style.. Estonia was not good..not good.. really not good.. The expression in his face at the end shows that he knows that.. San Marino, well, he can´t sing… the performance speaks for it self… Is Iceland really that… Read more »
Maybe the cheesy performances of the second semi-final can save Eurovision.. Most of them are in English, with no relation to the country they represent.. So, it´s fine. There´s hope. I bet the Coldplay impersonator (Duncan Laurence) will win and save us all.
here are the latest news…
i am staying at the same hotel with some esc singers. last night anna odobescu of moldova and serbian back singer i don’t know his name he has no hair… spent the night together at anna’s room ;)))
So?
Anyone else think Eurovision has peaked between 2012 – 2016, and it’s only going backwards since then?
I’m all for fun and entertainment, but such low quality performaces like San Marino should not qualify for the final anymore. Also, note to Poland and Portugal: Eurovision is not a costume show anymore :I We are not in the 90’s and 2000’s…
Most of these semifinal performances were either ordinary, boring, outdated, unprofessional, or clownish. Something like Euphoria should happen again, otherwise I have a fear that Eurovision will decline further in the next couple years.
Yes, 2016 was a quality peak (I don’t mean his will be the only one).
For me, 2015 was the best. 2015 Top 3 > 2016 Top3.
I actually really enjoyed most of last nights performances, and that’s music, everyone is different and you can either like it or not. I enjoyed it, even San Marino
Guess what, I also find Serhat entertaining, but entertainment =/= quality.
maybe not but he still qualified so maybe he did deserve it
So, first of all, congratulations to KAN for a great spectacle last evening, wonderful idea with postcards (some of them were truly amazing) and lovable hosts! I was a little bit pissed off about too much homosexual reference – I get it, liberty, tolerance etc, I just want to say it could have been made in more subtle way, no need to show off with it. The camera cuts were kinda weird as well, even though the stage is small, wide shots during chorus were distracting and I felt like they didn’t especially care about some songs. Press conference was… Read more »
I guess you can say Assi asked Miki a very uncomfortable question.
What did he ask?
He was just being rude while pretending to be fun.
By running order: 1. Cyprus – Tamta’s outfit was trashy but the performance was ok (a little bit off-key, perhaps). Fine with it qualifying but wouldn’t shock me if she didn’t. 2. Montenegro – It was better than what people wrote about it but stage was empty and their performance was chaotic. 3. Finland – it was fine but it was known from the gate that this song wasn’t up to the challenge. Good staging. 4. Poland – positively surprised by Tulia’s performance and hence disappointed about them not getting in. They deserved it but with no Ukraine, United Kingdom,… Read more »
I agree on most. Not Greece however. she was also out of tune i parts of the song and dId not connect with the camera or her dancers . Belarus was not really good either.
Jon Ola said public and jury agreed in 8/10 songs. One of those 2 songs is San Marino for sure.
So, to conclude, you have nothing positive to say.
This Semi was amazing. great show 🙂
Poland Portugal and Hungary underestimated
Hello! Please join the petition for Poland, Portugal, Hungary and the countries that noted problems with the voting count!
https://www.change.org/p/eurovision-recount-eurovision-2019-first-semifinal
I did sign
Almost every song I wanted to qualify actually quialify! I’m really shocked.
I may be the only person who really liked Belarus so I was so happy she qualified! San Marino wasn’t the best in vocal, but I just love music, very positive. The same with Czech Republic.
Cyprus and Greece was obvious, but still – I’m happy!
I just really like happy, catchy, energetic songs and it’s great so many funny ones qualified
Poland Portugal and Hungary underestimated
Serhat live performance was close to a disaster but I love that song and I’m super happy to see him in the final
seems you can qualify even if the song is sung out of tune… is no longer about the song, it’s no longer about the voice, it’s all about the show…
wonder what would be the result if we only could listen to the songs… which songs would make it through..
The lesson here is that Eurovision deserves to have more offkey performances with lyrics like na-na-na. This song qualifying just took the contest back 40 years. It’s embarrassing. If Montenegro sent this song, everyone would crucify it. But because it’s San Marino and Serhat everyone celebrates it. It’s beyond crazy. I hope next year we get 20 na-na-nas and la-la-las and oy-oy-oys. That will really make the contest seem relevant.
Why are you so upset about a “Na na na” song making it through? Are you all collectivelly pretending that the majority of the lyrics (especially romantic love themed ones) aren’t generic and borderline superficial anyway? 😀
Are you serious with Slovenia? That performance was so creepy. She was like lip syncing during the performance. And that was totally silly when she sings the song the boy was touching her without purpose. That was really awkward whats the point of these touches?
felt like soft erotica, was quite enchanting really
I think that if we understood the lyrics, it would make more sense to us
Finally someone saying it all. It looked so amateurish and masturbatory. I was appalled when they went through, but I think they stood out against the ‘loud’ performances…
Hate to say it, but your comments sound so stupid. The song is about them being star crossed lovers I think, that’s why they had the stars in the background. And star crossed lovers aren’t suppose to touch are they? I mean did you not learn anything by Dana like let them show some love. I thought it was beautiful. So intimate and so simple. The point of these touches was to show love and all they are a couple after all.
I only knew Polish and Australian entries before the contest (1. because I’m in Poland, 2. I had to watch Australia Decides because I’m a fan of Dami Im) and for others just titles and performers to avoid listening to their Eurovision songs if I can, to get everything during contest without spoiling or “growing on me” and have a fresh ear on the performances during semifinals, just like I think 90% or more televoters may have. I can say while Portugal may have been the fans favorite, it didn’t resonate with me at all with the performance yesterday, so… Read more »
A lot of ESC fans act like children. Stop fighting strangers you disagree with. Instead get the most out of the ESC week – savor and exchange all the fun with those you agree with. You’ll feel a lot better. 😉 I was afraid that Slovenia was doomed to be this year’s dark horse. Turns out it’s Portugal. I’m sad Portugal (and Belgium, Poland… would let them through in place of Belarus and Iceland) didn’t qualify but overjoyed for Slovenia. They deserve the Top 10. I’m glad about Australia and happy for Estonia. My bitterness over Serhat’s failure to make… Read more »
Love Poland Portugal Hungary
Love love love
Good luck Eurovision 2020
Last night there was a moment before they anounced the results, Bar Rafaeli and the host with glasses were introducing esc 2019 dvd and music album. And Bar said on dvd you will have behind the scenes and etc. And after the other host added ‘ if you are under 20 years old’ what does he mean i couldn’t get it? Can anyone explain me?
They explained the young generation (therefore the “under 20 years old”), what a CD and a DVD are 😀
Ola Sand has revealed that the score difference between #10 and #11 in last night’s first Semi-Final was just 2 points.
Which makes me guess that Portugal was probably #11 thanks to all the televoting love. I wonder who was #10, though? San Marino?
I am pretty sure Poland was the 11th and Portugal even lower or before last (MOntenegro)
10th place between San Marino, Belarus or Serbia.
11th place between Poland, Hungary or Portugal.
How is it possible? The overwhelming majority of the qualified artists had a terrible vocal performance .. Horrible .. And Australia? The visible sticks completely destroy the illusion of staging .. Jesus, eurovision 2019 is canceled for me.
I actually think the visibility of the sticks is cleverly done. First half of the song people try to understand how she does it and second half they talk about it when they see how she does it. Overall, they talk about the staging during the whole song which is good especially when the song itself might not be amazing.
It’s good they showed the sticks, otherwise televoters might think it’s a prerecorded music video and not the live performance.
Yo, you know Kate can’t fly, right? Just the thought that she can’t fly can kill the illusion if you’re not that into it. You know something is holding her somehow, rather you see it or not, it’s not like you really think she’s flying so… Really don’t get the “ThE sTiCk KiLlS tHe IlLuSiOn” comments. Also, not sure who you’re talking about when you say “overwhelming majority” because the only acts who did have some major vocal issues were Estonia, Belgium and San Marino, and out of 17 acts that is not the majority 😛
If you ask me “Who could be the most likely competitor for Duncan to win Eurovision, just to create suspense?”, after this semi I need to say Kate. Neither Mahmood nor Bilal will win. After yesterday, the run is between Kate and Duncan.
Sergey, Chingiz, Michaela and John, whatever are someone tastes, have very calibrated, clean songs and have the whole package. Mahmood is from Italy so will be robbed. Speaking of Italy, Duncan may do a Francesco Gabani. Luca can be better than expected and the song is still a strong contender. This year is quite open.
Lisbon…?
This is not serious anymore. How they hell did Belarus, Australia, Czech Republic and Estonia get through to the finale. And than there was San Marino for crying out loud. I think some people are really deaf. I do hope that all Belgium haters are happy now, but for me thé biggest upset was the non aualification of Portugal, i never really cared about the song but I was pretty sure he would make it.
really glad we won’t get to hear that Portuguese Byzantine rhyme again on Saturday
You really asking yourself how did Australia make it to the grand final? Uhm… maybe because they had the best overall performance of the night rather you like the song or not. And Czech Republic, not too far behind, nailed the staging and had the most fun and charismatic performance/performers of this semi.
Dana Internationals song… you are amazing just the way you are …. Well her advice is not that, instead you should starve yourself. Her advice to Lynda W isn’t that you are good just the way you are. I don’t like that.
Look at 4.40
https://youtu.be/saoXy6o9-g0
On a more positive note, I predicted 9 out of 10 (and yes I did not included Portugal), but did not see San Marino’s qualification… (and I am not happy about it… ) Moving on, I became mesmerised by Australia, I now think she can actually win this and generally conforted by the fact that all the good songs (bar Portugal and Poland) got into the final.
Highs
Serbia, Iceland qualifying. Portugal and Hungary not qualifying.
Lows
San Marino qualifying despite an awful song and truly abysmal vocals. Belgium not going through. I love the song but staging and vocals were lacklustre. I kind of understand why it didn’t register with the public but still disappointed. Sorry to see Poland out. Every other qualifier I have no issues with.
Lets not forget that ESC is a party, guys! To celebrate music and meet new friends. Just because your country didn’t make it doesn’t mean it’s bad or because it’s politics. Just keep on partying, that’s the spirit of ESC!
Some of you forget that…
WORD
Thank you!!
Indeed! The party will go on tomorrow! The best message I read the whole day!
thank you for that piece of banal tripe
My first spontaneous thought: Germany’s chances of not being the last have increased. I did not discover a song that was really good. Cyprus is exactly the same as last year (song in itself I like, but is just something that has already heard 100000000000 times.) Iceland still stands out, even if it’s not my taste. Greece song in itself ok The Czech Republic has felt that it has already been heard tens of times. Belarus is exactly the same as Cyprus. San Marino you can treat yourself as a fun act, or let it be I do not like… Read more »
your taste is bad
Poe-Tay- tor- chip Or maybe only different from our tast?
Would guss most sweeds like Estonia, typical swedish music. But I love Hungary and like Poland … very unpypicsl Swedish tast. But what is right? .
And that shows me that ur taste is bad 🙂
not all uptempo songs are Fuego 2.0 for f sake. Cyprus didn’t invent the genre in 2018. It’s like saying all salsa songs are the same. Yes, that’s how idiotic you sound.
Well this was the bad halffinal tomorrow come the good one .paciente.:)
The directing was disappointing,it showed how small the stage is
The odds were moving quite well in Conan’s favor when he performed. The odds move according to how people bet so I’m pretty confident he had a nice televote.
This begs the question: how can juries bury this song when they gave enough points to San Marino and Estonia that they made it to the final? The two of them were off-key the whole songs. Aren’t they “profissional” jurors?
i bet san marino is way high in televote there is a huge turkish diaspora in europe but i cant see juries push san marino also portugal i bet its 11th with low diff with the 10th(San marino)
Estonia and San marino sang really well during the jury rehearsal, which is when the jury vote. The jury doesn’t vote in the live shows
There’s not a situation where Serhat can sing well. The guy has no voice. Simple as that.
no, he actually did sing well in the jury rehearsel, that’s a fact. you may not like his voice but that’s a different story. the jury performance went really well for him
I do agree with you. I don;t like to be negative but Serhat is not a singer.
the juries are corrupt and music industry types who are paid to vote for the rubbish that gets played on chart radio
I liked Slovenia and Iceland the best. They’re just different but in an interesting way. I don’t understand the hype around Australia. Good staging doesn’t compensate a boring song.
I think Australia’s song is great and it fits the staging perfectly. You know, she sings about letting go of all her worries so now she feels light, free, zero gravity and that’s why she’s “flying”. I think it’s brilliant
It’s okay Lukas. Everyone has his/her own preferences. But majority of people enjoys Australia performance. No doubt Slovenia and Iceland were pretty good too last night.
You’re right… they enjoy Australia’s performance but not the song itself. I just think it’s nothing special, rather boring and generic. I really liked the one from 2017 though…
I guess people’s tastes are different. Most people would see 2019 as an amazingly written one and 2017 as that generic one. It’s all up to our tastes.
