Cypriot broadcaster CYBC love to tease – especially when it comes to their Eurovision act.
Back in November, the broadcaster dropped some hints about eventual entrant American-Greek German singer Sandro Nicolas. Today, they’ve dropped some hints about his song entry to Eurovision – featuring a video clip from Australia Decides 2019 entrant, Alfie Arcuri.
On their official Facebook page, CYBC made two posts. One featured a short snippet of Alfie’s 2017 song/short film “If They Only Knew”.
The clip features a romantic encounter between two boys at an arcade, with Alfie’s song an ode to struggling to accept his sexuality in his younger years.
What could this have to do with the 2020 Cyprus entry?

Hours later, the broadcaster confirmed that the clip would be related somehow to Sandro’s Eurovision entry. What could the relation be?
Alfie participated in the Eurovision selection Australia Decides last year with “To Myself”, placing 5th. He went on to sing at Romania’s Golden Stag Festival later that year, alongside Eurovision alumni Anna Odobescu and Tamara Gachechiladze.
Back in 2017, Alfie spoke of the themes of the short film in “If They Only Knew”:
“We have shot a short film for “If They Only Knew” exploring some of the challenges that young LGBTQ people face. I believe that by sharing our stories we can inspire empathy and help support anyone going through that struggle. Love is Love.”
The themes Alfie explored in his short film parallel our chat to Sandro back in December, where he mentioned that he writes songs for people “who feel alone and abandoned”:
“It will be something that comes straight from the heart. I’m a very emotional guy and I have a story to tell. I want to help people out.”
“I think music is also about helping each other and I write music for people that feel sad, that feel alone, abandoned. I wrote a song that is about that very thing — that not everything in this life is always good or about happiness. Our song has a strong message. I write music that is real and that comes from a very true and genuine place.”
Sandro also told us he doesn’t like to be “handed a song”, but prefers to co-write, and that he’ll only sing a song he truly loves.
With both Sandro and Alfie sharing similar themes in their songwriting, there may just be a song collaboration between the pair – with Alfie perhaps collaborating in the production of the Cypriot entry for 2020.
Back in December, Alfie travelled to Berlin to join some writing sessions, producing 6 songs. While the songs may be for his own personal album, there might just be a chance that he could be collaborating with the Greek-German Sandro, who was himself in Berlin earlier this month. Could the stars be aligning?
Sandro told us that back in December he was still looking through demos:
“At the moment there are a handful of demos that could be “the one” for ESC. We’re definitely getting close. It’s not final yet but there are a couple of songs that are being considered at the moment. It’s going to be a tough decision. I love all the songs — all songs come straight from the heart.”
What we do know about the song, is that, at least, it won’t be a dance banger. Instead, he imagines the song will ultimately feel like “Shawn Mendes kisses James Arthur kisses Lewis Capaldi”.
With the deadline for Eurovision entries coming up in just weeks, we should expect to hear Sandro’s entry soon.

I am smelling non qualification for the first time since 2013. Lets see the song but the hinting game never ends well (hello equinox). Next year they will definitely send a famous greek act
The problem with Equinox was not the hinting game. It was the fact that as a group they looked out of place and with no connection between them. And anyway they ended 14th which isn’t that bad nowadays
its not bad but they were in the top5 of the betting odds and everyone expected them to do really well

Honestly, as a gay person myself, if this is a song about homosexuality I’m gonna be mad. I’m tired of artists using us and our struggles just to get votes from the LGBT community. I think enough is enough.

Unless you live on another planet Rik has admitted almost immediately that the clue was about Alfie Arcuri, this same article of Wiwiblogs mentions it and so does other sites from Greece like the Eurofuns which was shared everywhere. So stop pretending your care is lgbt rights being exploited
