The Sanremo Music Festival is without question one of the most hyped national contests out there. The long-running Italian music festival — which was also the inspiration for Eurovision — turns 70 in just a few days.
On 4 February, RAI 1 will kick off the 2020 edition and welcome its 24 stars, all of whom carry heavyweight reputations and some proper musical talent. No amateurs here, darling!
Keep your eyes open, since the winner will most likely represent Italy in Rotterdam this May. Yes, most likely: for according to the rules, the winner has to accept the opportunity to fly the Italian flag in the Netherlands. In the event he or she doesn’t, RAI will then select another representative from among the remaining 23 acts.
Sanremo 2020: Early Favourites
The bookies’ choice
Some weeks separate us from the final, and the bookmakers have already started to predict the final podium finish. They’ve declared rapper Anastasio — winner of X Factor Italy 12 — the favourite to win it all. And before him they were backing Alberto Urso.
He’s now tied for second with Achille Lauro and Eurovision 2017’s Francesco Gabbani. Giordana Angi completes the predicted top five.
At the other end of the rankings, Italian bookmakers lack confidence in Elettra Lamborghini. The reggaeton singer is in last in the odds together with Rita Pavone, Paolo Jannacci, Junior Cally, Rancore and the couple formed by Morgan and Bugo.

But of course, the bookies haven’t actually heard the entries. Therefore, much of their ranking may be based on the early previews printed by journalists and bloggers who actually have. Among the favourably reviewed acts are Elodie and Elettra, in contrast to the what the oddsmakers suggest.

I’m from Italy and I hope with all my heart that Levante or Elodie will reppresent Italy in Eurovision! I’m very exited , who knows , maybe a woman will reppresent my country this year !
I hope that Achille Lauro, Levante or Pinguini Tattici Nucleari will represent Italy at Eurovision and i hope that Fasma will win nuove proposte. If Achille Lauro will represent Italy this year at esc I will be so happy. Btw idk but i don’t like much that fact that Elettra Lamborghini and riki are in Sanremo, because i feel like they don’t fit there, because they make songs that reminds latin/summer pop music hit style and y’all know, in Festival di Sanremo mostly are songs that their lyrics is like poetry, ballads, pop songs and somethimes something more “wild” like… Read more »
Irene Grandi and Le Vibrazioni because of their names, Raphael Gualazzi, Anastasio, Bugo & Morgan, Levante, Rita Pavone and Pinguini Tattici Nucleari because the journalists’ reviews for their songs intrigued me the most.

Francesco and Raphael. I’m even going to say Raphael in this case. Enough time has passed for him to grow as an artist and even improve over his already pretty good skills. I’d love it if Francesco has something as good as Occidentali’s Karma, but it was so *perfect* in itself, so I’ll just say I want for him to have a good song. I’m trying not to be disappointed if the new song isn’t as impeccable as his last one.

I think Anastasio is gonna win this BUT I suppose he will not come to ESC (for several reasons). At that point, RAI will decide one between Elodie and Elettra.
Actually, there is a dark horse in this competition: Diodato, in that case… Will see.

I think if the winner declines, RAI will just go down the leaderboard to second place, like in 2016.
