The Next Star for Eurovision — Israel’s artist selection for Eurovision 2020 — finally has the end within sight. After a staggering 33 episodes, the nine qualifiers to the quarter-final faced one last elimination before the semis. The nine acts were divided into three groups of three, performing one after the other. The artist who got the lowest score of the nine singers faced elimination.

The Next Star for Eurovision – Quarter-finals

Quarter-final 1 results

  1. Lali Kolishkin – “Girl on Fire” (87%) – First overall

2. Eden Alene – “Yekhefa” (78%) – Fourth overall

3. Loai Ali – “Ya Mama” (55%) – Ninth overall, eliminated

Quarter-final 2 results

  1. Orr Amrami-Brockman – “Aluf Ha’Olam” (77%) – Fifth overall

2. Moran Aharoni – “Love on Top” (68%) – Seventh overall
3. Raviv Kaner – “Always” (67%) – Eighth overall

Quarter-final 3 results

  1. Gaya Shaki – “idontwannabeyouanymore” (85%) – Second overall

2. Ella Lee-Lahav – “Wild Enough” (83%) – Third overall

3. Ohad Shragai – “Pe Gadol” (69%) – Sixth overall

Overview

The three quarter-finals ended after one hour of performances and one hour of commercial breaks. Loai Ali, Raviv Kaner and Ohad Shragai lost their respective quarter-finals, but Ali had the lowest score by far. Because he only got 55%, the judges chose to eliminate him.

Notably, the bottom three of the quarter-final phase were all men, while the top four were all women. The semi-finals will take place on February 1, 2 and 3, with the grand final airing on Tuesday, February 4.

Who will qualify for the final?

Semi-final results often reflect the artists’ success in earlier stages. So, here are the different singers’ average result in episodes 20 to 33.

  1. Eden Alene (85.8%)
  2. Lali Kolishkin (84.8%)
  3. Gaya Shaki (83.0%)
  4. Ella Lee Lahav (80.7%)
  5. Moran Aharoni (80.2%)
  6. Orr Amrami-Brockman (78.5%)
  7. Raviv Kaner (68.2%)
  8. Ohad Shragai (66.0%)

The margin between sixth and seventh place is notable, but it’s very tight at the top. While the five women still in the contest make up the top five, the three remaining men are down at the bottom. However, it’s statistically unlikely that the top four will qualify for the grand final. No Next Star final has ever had a one-gender final.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane, all the performances from this season are available on Spotify! The different episodes are available as albums, and the judges and hosts’ voices are removed.  To find them, just search for ” הכוכב הבא “.

Did anyone notice last night that judge Keren Peles already had a premonition about Lali before the results were known at that point? She told her that in case she doesn’t make it to the final it’s probably for the best because she’s so young not just in terms of age but also in terms of ‘mileage’. That’s only part of it, but you wonder why the same can’t be applied to Ella Lee and how much the judges stand behind sending someone at that age. Amdursky told Lali she’s the best vocalist Israel could ever send and that if… Read more »

@Sam I hope you are right but I think that the hype machine in Israel is behind Orr or Ella Lee. I 100% agree with the analysis and it seems very obvious to me that Eden and Lali both have the most polished voices. Lali lacked the stage charisma, but Eden is polished both in voice and performance abilities and is almost guaranteed to give Israel a top 10 and likely top 5 placement (assuming they send the right song – which I think they will). On the Eurovision stage she is completely unique and will be the first true… Read more »

Or was adopted from Ukraine by his dads when he was only a baby so I don’t think he knows or understands any Ukrainian or Russian so I doubt them giving him any extra points

Orr was too low. He is the best by far.

Ella Lee strongest performance in the first round today. Eden strongest performance in the second round. Lali is out and Ella Lee and Eden tied. Ella Lee’s inexperience came through in the second round. You can see it throughout the contest when she cries every time one of the judges criticizes her. You can’t blame her. She’s still a child after all. I think Ella Lee will win it on Tuesday because she is a clear favorite in Israel, but her inexperience will come though in Eurovision when she’s compared to professionals from other countries.

Ella Lee’s advantage tonight was that she demonstrated her carefree youth, vitality, empathy and ability to remain focused on both her singing and dancing. The other two went for female solo bops and diva anthems without going for a big production number. Eden Alene made a terrible error of judgement with the Riki Gal song because it was completely out of context for the semi final phase. She had a hard time making an emotional connection and sounded almost exhausted by the end. Lali perhaps came across as too serious and motionless. She could have been more generous with her… Read more »

I agree with you about Lali. Vocally she is great but she has no charisma on stage. Vocally though she is mature beyond her age and she’ll learn eventually how to perform better.

Ella-lee was the best. This is what she should sing at Eurovision- little, melodic songs. Her voice shines.

Orr is still magical, but his performances are all too similar, it’s getting boring. Same applied to Gaia. I feel badly for Moran Aharoni… Hope she feels better soon.

Ella Lee was brilliant with ‘Wild Enough’. It showcased all her strengths as a performer with an artistic persona. It’s weird how the average percentages for episodes 20-33 can both distort and predict what happens/happened next. Most of the eliminations till now were so predictable because the contestant with the lowest score always got kicked out. I think it’s totally unfair and distorting when the show eliminates 4 out of 8 contestants all at once based on one single performance. Get those handkerchiefs ready if you’re a real softy.

In this performance, Ella-Lee proved to be the best of all by far. She is my winner without a doubt.

While there are several strong vocalists, Ella Lee is the only special singer out of them
I really want her to win 🙂

@Roy – I remember last year you said Kobi will face plant hard at Eurovision and a lot of people here gave you slack because of it. You ended up being 100% right. Many of these same people now support Orr.

I feel like Orr might have a successful career here in Israel but won’t do so well at Eurovision
I feel like Ella Lee is the most unique singer we have this year
How well she’ll do? Depends on the song
However, I do like Kobi’s 2 new songs :3
And yea, Not only did people disagreed with me here, but also in Israel
He was a huge fan favourite to represent us

His song sucked. Ella is just Israeli Katie Perry. In Hebrew she doesn’t do well.
