It’s the country that’s struggled at Eurovision for the past two years. But this afternoon, Poland took the first steps towards shaking things up with the semi-final one of Szansa na Sukces – Eurowizja 2020.
And out of seven acts, Kasia Dereń emerged on top.
Poland’s Szansa na Sukces – Eurowizja 2020 Semi-Final One Results
For Eurovision 2020, Poland is using the long-running Szansa na Sukces franchise to find its act and song for Rotterdam. The same approach landed them a victory at Junior Eurovision 2019.
Unlike traditional national finals, the early rounds see hopefuls perform covers.
Today, the show theme was ABBA Hits. Seven singers performed their interpretations of evergreen classics from the iconic Swedish band. After everyone was done, it was up to a panel of Eurovision veterans — Michal Szpak, Cleo and Gromee — to decide which one performer should progress to the final.
They opted for The Voice Poland star Kasia Dereń.
The full line-up was:
- Patryk Skoczyński “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight)”
- Emilia Sanecka “Waterloo”
- Julia & Wiktoria Szlachta “Dancing Queen”
- Kasia Dereń “Mamma Mia”
- Amelia Andryszczyk “S.O.S”
- Sargis Davtyan “Voulez-vous”
- Maja Hyży “Knowing me, Knowing You”
The series continues next week with semi-final two — Eurovision hits.
Semi-final three will focus on The Beatles. It won’t be until the fourth and final episode of the series that we will get to hear the potential songs for Eurovision 2020.
Poll results: Who should win semi-final 1 of Poland’s Szansa na Sukces – Eurowizja 2020?

- Maja Hyży 17.47% (142 votes)
- Patryk Skoczyński 13.65% (111 votes)
- Amelia Andryszczyk 8.73% (71 votes)

- Julia & Wiktoria Szlachta 3.2% (26 votes)
Total Votes: 813
Are you happy to Kasia progress? Could she win the whole thing? Let us know in the comments.
[…] the final of Poland’s Szansa na Sukces drawing ever closer, the winner of semi-final one Kasia Dere? has released her song for Eurovision “Ufaj […]
Kasia is A M A Z I N G. she must win
I’m happy that Kasia won this semifinal. She can actually sing, unlike a few other competitors
To listen new singiel Viki Gabor feat .Kayah “Rami? w rami? ”
Good luck Kasia Deren
Ramie w Ramie is the best song
actually pretty bad song
I think it’s worth mentioning that Kasia was a backing vocalist during polish act at Eurovision Song Contest 2018 (“Light Me Up” by Gromee feat. Lukas Meijer)
Off topic: Evgenya Redko is out of Lithuanians national selection.
I have absolutely no idea whether this format will be a success or not
Format Szansa na sukces is ok !
I know this format is a way to build some hype, earn some money from advertisment and get to know the contestants but the most important thing is the song. How does this work? I mean: do they have their own ESC song but they are only able to sing it if they reach the last episode? Or they don’t have a song of their own and they are only given one if they reach the final? I think both ways have its downsides and this NF is more focused on advertisment and the voices rather than on succeding: –… Read more »
Some of them have song already like for example Saszan or Paula Czapla but they’re minority. If finalist doesn’t have one or TVP doesn’t like it, they are given songs from professional song writers (artists take part in the writing process which is confirmed by Kasia Dere?).
Natalie, songs are not given to finalists. The latter collaborate with writers and producers to create something fitting them as best as possible. As u said, there were some exceptions in which artists sent thzir own song to TVP before they were chosen. But it doesn’t matter actually. Everything will be focused on 3 final acts. I’d like to add that jury take into account personal contribution to covers concerning artists. It’s not only about performing like covered artists but en effort to show their charisma.
But can a good song be created in such a short amount of time? We’ve seen these kind of songs fail at the contest.
Semifinals were recorded on 19th – 20th of January. They have more than month to compose a song.
No, we saw them won – it was the same people who wrote polish JESC-winners songs that will be writing the song for the winner now.
All Semi-finals were recorded 2 weeks ago, so all finalists are “known” since then. There are still almost 3 weeks left until the grand final which will be broadcasted live. If the finalist didn’t have their own song, they have 5 weeks to create one. But they aren’t on their own. Those songs will be created in collaboration with professional teams from Universal Music Poland. This way contestants will have a song that they believe in and is connected with them in some way. Semi-finals of this format are to choose the voice and personality, and the grand final will… Read more »
To listen Kasia Deren and Dorota Osinska ” Niech zyje bal ”
The voice of poland
They wont keep this selection for next year. What matters is the package, eurovision is not The Voice.
I think that TVP will send Roksana Wegiel next year so they won’t keep it but it doesn’t mean that artists from Szansa na sukces won’t have a full package
You think she’d risk flop on adult ESC when she has thriving career here? Highly doubt it. If we’ll qualify and do somewhat well in final (like top15), then they will keep it for sure. If whoever they pick will fail to qualify, I can see them dropping it.
Sure! https://youtu.be/pE9cBfTWtzE
Kasia from sf1, Alicja from sf2, Albert from sf3 and it will be a perfect Final of Szansa na Sukces!
That’s basically everyone’s prediction
Nah I don’t think that Albert will win semifinal 3
He’s got the voice for a Beatles cover. Plus it’d be neat if he became the first person to represent two different countries at Eurovision back to back.
If you count the backing singers, SuRie and Cesar Sampson have already done it in 2018, Anna Vissi was pretty close too with two years of difference.
I mean, yeah. Technically speaking.
Yves Dessca won the Eurovision twice in a row for different countries – okay, as a songwriter, but it is a song contest after all.
Back in the days when France got away with sending three entries a year (if you count Monaco and Luxembourg)
Eveyone is worried about the songs but after songs in the Szansa na sukces final for JESC and amazing Superhero, I’m not worried. I think they will be much better then ones in Krajowe Elimanacje
JESC and ESC are different competitions. This kind of selection works well for younger singers who have yet to fully articulate their own artistic identity and so can benefit from a song being written for them, but for adult singers who should have their artistic identity already it leads to “one size fits all”/generic songs being written to suit any artist.
I don’t think Poland will be a trainwreck this year, but I don’t think this song will be all that special either.
I watched an interview with Kasia today and she stated the work is still in progress and she takes part in the process of creating a song along with songwriters. Let’s wait for the outcome, I’m positive the song can be at least decent! 🙂
In Szansa na Sukces finalists are already working on their ESC songs, as all episodes have been pre-recorded. Kasia said the song must « fit » her and her personality.
we had fully articulated Tulia’s artistic identity song last year…
And Sweden is doing amazingly well at ESC and imo they send songs which suit any artist
i dont think any artistst could sing Benjamins song and Johns. you need a big voice for Johns and a falsetto for Benjamins. so not anyone
still not that special, a lot of artists could easily do that
Amazing, underrated artist, With that voice she deserves to be more than just backing vocalist.
I was hoping for Patryk to win.
I realny like the timbre of his voice. But this performance was far from what he got us used to.
Maybe TVP will give him golden ticket to the final…
Anyway I am quite happy with the result.
He was weak. He never will be a singer. I hope that he has another proffession
Patryk was so, SO bad. His performance hurt my ears
Brawo Kasia
Big voice
Good luck Poland
Good luck Kasia
Wow Kasia!

Great Final of Szansa na Sukces will be with televoting
Yes
I don’t think that this is the best idea ever to pick ESC entry. It’s obvious that broadcaster values voice/talent over song/performance and it’s not like person who wins each year is the best singer. But then again, finally, after YEARS looks like Poland actually cares what they send. And I can respect that. You know, at least every year we’ll be sure that they’ll be slaying live whatever song they got (good or bad). Again, it’s not what I dream of but still that’s waay better than these “preselections” we had before if you ask me.
Kasia has great vocal, but I have one uncomfortable question: Will composers write a song for her talent?
It is also worth mentioning that Patryk Skoczynski was the runner-up in today’s semi-final, as he was the only one who got an honorable mention from the judges.
Emilia was The best!
She was weak. Her english was very bad.
Partryk Skoczynski is so hot!
o my goood, yeees!
I’d rather say cute if anything
Amelia’s performance was truly special and I supported her since Poland didn’t send something dreamy and ethereal for a very long time. But Kasia is a very solid performer, without a doubt she had the best vocals today, so it’s a deserved win to me. 🙂
Please add to this article that Kasia was actually Gromee’s backing vocalist in Lisbon so she’s not a stranger to Eurovision Stage
But Gromee is one of the judges, is he not? Is this fair?
This whole selection does not seem very fair :/ Many contestants have some connection to judges or to the broadcaster.
Most of them know each other either from Voice or somewhere else, so you can’t prevent these thoughts but I don’t think so. Even if he voted on her, there’s no doubt that she had the best performance anyway. And in case of draw, Michal had deciding vote today. Like, there will be girl who was in Michal’s team in the Voice next week (again, fan favourite), so if she wins, people will say it’s rigged anyway :/ That’s how it works.
Alicja is a fan favourite and she wasn’t in Micha?’s team
No, she was in Afromental’s team but Micha? was also a judge in that season
Oh my bad. But anyways, he knows her.
In 3rd episode Marzena Ryt is competing and she was in Michal’s team… So yeah, gonna be strange
But she is actually amazing vocally
She was clearly the best anyway.
Kasia Deren works in TVP too. She is a singer in Wheel of Fortune (daily game show)
I’m Polish and I’m honestly quite disappointed with the whole selection process. Kasia and other singers who performed in the first semi are definitely talented, but it’s not what Eurovision is about. We need a whole package, not just a good voice. No one really amazed me in today’s episode and no one seemed particularly charismatic to me. Anyway, the most important thing is the song and it must fit the singer, so let’s hope they have something good in store for the final.
Alicja Szemplinska should win the whole thing in my opinion 🙂
Alicja will be a winner. She’s young and she has a potential. Kasia Deren is 35 y.o and she never will be a star. She had a good voice but she hasn’t personality.
it’s true, if your career is being a backing vocalist at 35 you clearly are not a star material. I can’t stand that Deren lady, her vocal range may be impressive but she just shouted through her Abba song and came across as an uninteresting performer
