He’ll compete in the 70th edition of Italy’s Sanremo Music Festival with “Viceversa”. And ahead of this year’s opening show on Tuesday 4 February, our readers can’t wait to discover what Francesco Gabbani has to offer.

Following his bombastic exploits in 2017 with “Occidentali’s Karma”, our readers have voted him as the contestant they are most excited for in Italy’s national selection for Eurovision 2020.

Francesco Gabbani is the Sanremo 2020 act our readers are most excited for

We launched our poll one week ago, on January 26, and have counted a total of 1,380 votes since then. Francesco Gabbani won the day with 317 votes — or nearly 23% of all those cast.

Ahead of his second attempt at snatching the Sanremo Campioni crown, he told Rolling Stone Italia what his song will be like.

“I sing the dynamics of love, not exclusively as a couple. The song explains how much we need each other. Viceversa expresses my most sincere part. I don’t go to the Festival to amaze, but with the desire to sing my song without any kind of superstructure.”

Sanremo 2020: Other favourites

In second place is Elodie, who last appeared in Sanremo 2017 with the heartfelt “Tutta colpa mia”. She finished eighth, and later achieved a platinum certification for the song.

It seems that appearance really whet our readers’ appetite, as they handed her 201 votes — around 15% — proving that her momentum hasn’t slowed.

The only other act to earn more than 100 votes is “twerking queen” Elettra Lamborghini, a television personality and influencer who gained notoriety after appearing in a number of international reality shows. She earned 134 votes — or just under 10%.

Sanremo returnee Raphael Gualazzi and X Factor Italy winner Anastasio round out the top five, nabbing more than 6% of the vote each.

Gualazzi won the Sanremo Newcomers section in 2011. He went on to secure Italy an impressive comeback at Eurovision, reaching second place in Düsseldorf with “Madness of Love”.

Rapper Anastasio makes his Sanremo debut this year.

I don’t think he’ll go to ESC if he wins

When will we be able to hear the songs? Like before they perform or only after they have? Like I can’t really pick a favorite until I’ve heard the song… Francesco was amazing in 2017 but I can’t honestly say I’m excited for him till I hear his song this year.

Francesco Gabbani doing a Bilan just the year after Sergey tried would amuse me immensely

But the question is if he would do Eurovision again?

All acts that participate in the Sanremo Festival have to agree to go to Eurovision now else they cannot enter. So he must be up for it!

No Boozyfloozy, it’s not like that. Singers still have the right to refuse esc in case of Sanremo victory. They enter Sanremo to do Sanremo. Only from this year, Rai has asked them to decide if they’re up to enter Eurovision no later than Sanremo finale. So that on the first press conference the winner can say if they go or don’t go for sure to esc. In this way it won’t be like last year when Mahmood won but didn’t immediately said yes , causing a mediatic uproar, because he had yet to inform himself about esc.

Honestly, can’t wait for Levante and Pinguini.
The fact Anastasio is currently the favourite for the win according to the bookies is killing my enthusiasm just a little bit, but I guess he would refuse his esc spot even if he won sooo whatever.

Weren’t you against Elettra given that she appears to be more of a celebrity than a proper musician? Unless her song is really good

People should be excited for Levante.
