Melodifestivalen 2020 continues on Saturday night with the second semi-final in Gothenburg. But we could have a clue as to who the show’s successes will be. Melodifestivalklubben’s audience poll, conducted at tonight’s jury rehearsal, has Méndez & Alvaro Estrella and Anna Bergendahl as the audience’s top two favourites, suggesting they’ll be the ones heading direkt till final on Saturday night.

Melodifestivalklubben — the Swedish chapter of the OGAE fan network — polled 697 audience members at the Scandinavium tonight’s rehearsal. They were asked “What was your favourite tonight?”

The semi-final audience was mostly families with children, while Méndez & Alvaro Estrella and Paul Rey were the two fake qualifiers who got to perform their song for the second time.

Leading the results was Méndez & Alvaro Estrella. The returning act and frequent Eurovision backing singer picked up 178 votes for their song, just over one-quarter of the total vote.

Coming in second was Eurovision comeback queen Anna Bergendahl. She received 131 votes, giving her 18.8%, suggesting she will may do better than 2019 and be heading directly to the grand final this time.

In third place — and possibly heading to andra chansen — was Dotter. Her song “Bulletproof” impressed audience members enough to pick up 129 votes — 18.5% of the overall vote. This suggests she will do better than her 2018 result and have a shot at the final via the second chance round. However, Dotter was received just two votes less than Anna Bergendahl, so a direkt till final position could be hers on the night.

In fourth place was Paul Rey. His song “Talking in my Sleep” picked up 117 votes, giving him a decent 16.8% of the overall vote. He could be the other act heading to andra chansen.

At the bottom of the poll was Klara Hammarström who had 63 votes (9%) for “Nobody”, Linda Bengtzing with 55 votes (7.9%) for “Alla mina sorger” and last-minute replacement Jan Johansen with 24 votes (3.4%) for “Miraklernas tid”.

Melodifestivalklubben audience poll results – Melodifestivalen 2020 semi-final 2 Gothenburg

  1. Méndez & Alvaro Estrella – “Vamos amigos” (178 votes – 25.5%)
  2. Anna Bergendahl – “Kingdom Come” (131 votes – 18.8%)
  3. Dotter – “Bulletproof” (129 votes – 18.5%)
  4. Paul Rey – “Talking In My Sleep” (117 votes – 16.8%)
  5. Klara Hammarström – “Nobody” (63 votes – 9%)
  6. Linda Bengtzing – “Alla mina sorger” (55 votes – 7.9%)
  7. Jan Johansen – “Miraklernas tid” (24 votes – 3.4%)

Of course, with such a small sample size, there’s no way of telling if this audience poll will play out correctly.

While previous predictions have been accurate, the audience poll hasn’t always got it right. In 2018 the poll infamously placed Felix Sandman second-to-last in his heat. Of course, he went on to finish runner-up to Benjamin Ingrosso while also spending several weeks atop the Swedish charts.

Last week’s poll had Felix Sandman as the most popular act in his semi, however on the night, he was one of the two andra chansen acts. While Robin Bengtsson went from being fourth in the poll to one of the two direct qualifiers in the semi-final.

Nonetheless — it’s a spot of fun and has proven generally correct in the past.

What do you think? Does the audience poll predict semi-final success for Méndez & Alvaro and Anna? Tell us your thoughts below!

Ha, ha. Leo har lite sant faktist. Har just börjat dansa salsa och Bachata förra veckan för jag var sååå less att det är så trist och tunga nyheter hela tiden.
Lustigt att så många upprörs.

Dotter will not pass the semifinal and Mendez will go to Andra Chansen along with Klara or even Linda Bengtzing… while Anna and Paul are going DTF.
That’s what I’m thinking.

Possible, but I hope not. I would love to see her move to AC DtF.

I can’t believe Sweden likes Méndez’s music. He feels like a parody of latin music. And this song could’ve been made by fourth graders after their first class of spanish. The lyrics are so cringy, even for a reggaeton song.

this semi is rubbish – only anna has an ok song but the dancers are ugly (these dancingshit has destroyed already ace wilder in 2014 and some other singers).
oh i forget the cool lightshow from dotter.
it is very busy saturday evening – i prefer watching ukraine, latvia and sanremo.

Would be a great result were it to happen. Of course, the audience poll was wrong last week so I’m not getting my hopes up.

It’s Samir and Victor. And at least their songs are fun and catchy. Mendez & Alvaro’s song is just basic reggaeton.

Give me more honest Bops to enjoy (like S&V or Mendez do) and less pretentious or serious boring songs.

You arent supposed to take them seriously either. It’s about having fun and partying. Not everything is about being serious

Méndez & Alvaro Estrella first… seriously? It is just a mediocre latin song. We could do better. But I’m sure if Spain sends a latin song, or this same song, everyone would be mad. And of course, we wouldn’t receive a point from Sweden…

Mendez’ song sounds very Swedish in its production. It’s like when Enrique Iglesias (Spanish) had Redone (Sweden) producing his tracks.
And we still haven’t sent a decent latin hit sadly. If we do so, I’m pretty sure Europe and Sweden would vote for Spain.

Hey, you underestimate all mothers and grannies that are so fed up whith the dark February whith just rain. We need some colours and Latino party in Sweden this time of the year, and we don’t care if there should be some false notes.

The people who vote on songs that are bad and singers that sing false should not vote at all. Its good that you are not that many:) so its no problem.

The thing with the new voting system in mello Is that more votes don’t necessarily translate to more points !!!

I don’t see Anna not going to the Final
And this poll shows Paul and Dotter pretty close to her heels
And Alvaro/Mendez aren’t that certain to be in the final
He went via Andra Chansen last time around right ??

Klara/Linda can still steal a place !! Most likely replacing Dotter if she doesn’t sound very vocally sound cause her posture is weird but the staging is good

I thought for sure Anna would be first in the audience poll but in a way I’m not entirely surprised regarding Mendez. He seems to be well liked in Sweden and I quite enjoy his song. I’m also really happy to see Dotter do well in the audience poll (a close 3rd behind Anna – by only 2 votes). I’d be happy if this audience poll ends up being the final result. Fun fact – the audience poll of 2018 for the semi where both Dotter and Mendez participated in had Mendez at FIRST and Dotter in 3rd! Eerily similar… Read more »

Interesting. And I would also like to add that one of the reasons why the audience poll isn’t always correct is that you get a whole other experience live in the arena than watching infront of a screen. That’s why Felix won the audience poll last week I think. Beats get heavier and you get carried away. And songs that want to bring you intimacy get lost, like Paul Rey this week.. Just some other factors too.

well Swedes are really bad at spotting good Latino music, they think it is like the ones Mendez sings and think that is some kind of exotic music or something, i just want to hide my face in a pillow seeing the lyrics of his song…not even JESC songs are that bad lyric wise…and the song is very basic to be honest

I must admit… I have no clue about the lyric . Ha… ha .. you have a point.. Give me just some latino or joy from the mamas that make me wanna move … and the vote is suddenly cheep i the grey february in Sweden.

Yes, bring some really good latino songs to ESC – and you can probably count on many televotes from Sweden.

Just the way I predicted that the Swedish audiences would vote tomorrow.
We will see if it will be like this, but as I have wrote earlier. Mendez wasn’t singing that good last time, but stilll. We, the swedes loved the Latino rythem an all the party feeling which all the colours. And I think Anna has a song that most swedes like better than the song last year-although I don’t agree myself

I find Anna’s song quite dated imo. But it’s energetic and makes you happy at least. I like it more than most songs from SF 1. And if Keino could win the most televotes in last years esc with that dated and cheeesy song then I’m pretty hopeful that there is still a place for songs like Anna’s too.

I’m also happy for Alvaro. He deserves some spotlight
