With two successful shows behind it — the second live episode collected 9,693,000 viewers and an audience share of 53.3%, the best result since 1995! — Sanremo 2020 moved on to the third night.
The 24 competing artists performed one of the songs entered in the previous 69 editions of the Italian Festival. Almost all the Campioni were accompanied by a guest performer. Among the artists were former Eurovision acts Francesca Michielin, Nina Zilli and Fausto Leali.
The cover night has become a regular feature of Sanremo over the years, but this year is crucial for the fate of the singers. Unlike previous editions, these special performances — voted on by only the members of the orchestra — will contribute to the final ranking.

Among the special guests of the third live show — hosted by Amadeus with the support of Albanian presenter Alketa Vejsiu and Argentine model Georgina Rodriguez — were Tiziano Ferro, who sang “In mezzo a questo inverno” and “Amici per errore”, and Oscar-winning actor and director Roberto Benigni.
Also on stage were British singer-songwriters Lewis Capaldi and MIKA. The former performed “Someone you loved” and “Before you go”, the latter sang “Jealousy”, “Happy ending” and a cover of “Amore che vieni, amore che vai” by Fabrizio De Andrè.

During the evening there was also an unexpected surprise. Seven superstars of Italian pop music — Alessandra Amoroso, Elisa, Giorgia, Fiorella Mannoia, Emma Marrone, Gianna Nannini and Laura Pausini — took the stage to premiere a prestigious project.
The seven artists will be on stage together on September 19th at the Arena Campovolo in Reggio Emilia for the concert Una, Nessuna e Centomila, a charity event to raise funds for the centres that care for female victims of violence.

How will the Sanremo winner be picked?
Voting during the five evenings will occur through different combinations of four methods:
- Public televoting, carried out via landline, mobile phone, the contest’s official mobile app, and online voting.
- Press jury voting, expressed by accredited journalists that followed the competition from the Roof Hall at the Ariston Theatre.
- A demoscopic poll, composed by 300 music fans who voted from their homes via an electronic voting system managed by global market research and a consulting firm Ipsos.
- Orchestra voting, resulting from points assigned by musicians and singers of the Sanremo Music Festival Orchestra.
The four voting systems will have a percentage weight so distributed:
- First and Second Evening: 100% demoscopic poll
- Third Evening: 100% orchestra voting
- Fourth Evening: 100% press jury voting
- Fifth Evening: 34% public televoting; 33% press jury voting; 33% demoscopic poll
In the final part of the fifth evening, a new rank indicating the first three acts — determined by the percentage of votes obtained in that evening’s vote and those obtained in previous evenings — will be drawn up.

Italy Spotify Update
#1 Pinguini (over 400k streams)
#3 Elettra
#4 Gabbani
#5 Levante
#6 Rancore
#10 Junior
Achille stays strong at #2. Elodie #7. Diodato #13
Mention to Fasma at #9 who has a fantastic song competing at giovani.
It really looks Pinguini vs Gabbani right now but whoever gets that 3rd spot in the superfinal might still do it like Mahmood last year. So exciting.
I’m feeling Pinguini are stronger than we might think. They might have a real chance of winning this. Press will probably love them as well.
Yeah, those guys are charming their way into the top 3. And depending on who they fight with in the final round, they may have a big chance, because they seem to be an act with very low rejection.
I think the press will try to favor the rappers the most. I guess it’d be good if they place them mid-table. I see they’re getting good votes on the papers, but not exceptional
So glad Tosca and our talented Silvia won the night. Very proud
M¥SS KETA… YOUTUBE HER.
Elodie and Achille ranking so low makes no sense at all. They should at least landed in the top 10. The orchestra was clearly trying to destroy their chances… The Italian audiences will be really mad this saturday, and the will have a point.
they deserved to be low
Elodie picked the wrong song, some may have been put off by her trying to do Eros Ramazzotti.
Riccardo Zanotti handing a bouquet of flowers to Cristiano Ronaldo sitting in the audience while singing Rolls Royce >>>>>>
Tosca was absolutely beautiful, I loved Gualazzi and Diodato. overall it was a vey entertaining covers night, even though I’ve read way too many complaints about the rappers performances. What did people expect them to do? They’re rappers, not Andrea Bocelli.
Penguini and Gabbani were best of the night. Especially when Penguini started singing Achille Lauro’s ‘Rolls Royce’ xD
When Riccardo (Pinguini’s singer) was singing to the violinist, the violinist pretty much looked like he just fell in love with him xD me too dude
I loved that! I mean, what better way to earn the orchestra’s vote, right??
Elodie and Montaigne cancel each other, France wins.
Those songs don’t even sound similar
Diodato’s cover was my favorite today. But I can’t wait to listen to him sing Fai Rumore again.
Does Elodie still have a chance to win after this? I dont really understand how Sanremo works?
I don’t know. I’ve looked at stuff explaining voting/points in sanremo and they have a complex system. Kind of sounds like televote on the 5th night matters very little in the grand scheme of things. At least to my understanding…
For the final ranking with all the 24 acts: 1) 12.5 % the combined ranking (demoscopic juries) of the first two evenings (released yesterday) 2) 12.5 % the ranking from this evening (orchestra) 3) 25 % the ranking of tomorrow night (Press vote) 4) 50 % Final night, where televote counts for 34%, demoscopic juries 33% and press poll 33% So in the end: Press: 41.5% Demoscopic juries: 29% Televoting: 17% Orchestra: 12.5% So I guess that the results from tomorrow will be really near to the final ones, since the press has big power compared to the other votinf… Read more »
Man…so I was right. Televoting counts for very little.
Also, …why does orchestra voting exist? The orchestra votes on a night where the acts are performing songs that aren’t even their own…I don’t get why that should count when it has nothing to do with the competing song.
I would like to know about it too. Do the orchestra judge only the performance at the night they vote, or do they vote for the previous nights too?
This year is a new director, and that’s how he wants to do it. Last director gave the public vote 40% weight and they voted every night. I’ve been watching Sanremo for five years, and this is the first time I’ve seen the orchestra vote.
Last year la Salla Stampa (the press jury) was really angry because they didn’t liked Mahmood. Also they wanted Loredana Bertè on the grand final, and started screaming her name. I think this system is a way of avoiding troubles with the press, giving them more power than any other voters.
Loredana Bertè was freaking horrible in 2019. She was not so much singing as screeching. *I* can sing better than that, and I couldn’t carry a tune if it weighed a gram and was strapped to my back.
Is there any way to find the combined results of the 3 first nights? Or do they keep it secret?
if you think that’s complicated you should look into the Italian election law under which the most-recent parliamentary election (March 2018) was held. Not that its predecessors were any less complicated.
Yes, she does. This ranking is only part of the final result (12.5%). If she manges to be in top 3 in tbe comined ranking on the final list, she can still win, beaceuse there will be another round of voting for the first three acts (like in Eesti Laul)
Do all rounds of voting account for the same percentage? I’ve been looking stuff on this up and I am so lost…
…televote actually does not count for very much, right?
This year, no. In previous years the public voted all nights. This year they have minimized the public vote.
Well, that’s some serious BS. So basically it’s all in the hands of….just a handful of people.
Handful of rich, old boomers essentially
Well that sucks…I don’t care for half the acts you listed…
