He was revealed as North Macedonia’s Eurovision 2020 act exactly one month ago. And on 14 February – Valentine’s Day – Vasil released the name of the song he will sing in Rotterdam — “You”.

Vasil will sing “YOU” for North Macedonia at Eurovision 2020

The flamboyant star broke the news via Instagram, initially teasing fans with a warning early on Friday. Then, shortly before 16:00 CET, the song title was revealed.

Tamara Todeveska’s Tel Aviv backing singer posted a shadowy white square, within which was contained the word “YOU”, in all caps. A stylised version of his name sits inside the “O”. Beneath lies the Eurovision logo complete with the Macdeonian flag.

The caption simply reads ” Y O U #OpenUp #TeamVasilG #Eurovision This year is all about … YOU.”

His stories also promote the song title reveal with one of his bare tattooed arms featuring prominently. Could this be a clue to the cover art, the music video, or even the staging?

Details regarding the song’s release have not yet been revealed. However, the state broadcaster has sent us details of the songwriting team.

The music is by Nevena Neskoska. She’s a Macedonian composer and producer who was born in the Macedonian city of Ohrid but raised in Chicago. Nevena studied songwriting at Berklee College of Music. Nevena also contributes to the song’s lyrics, along with Kalina Neskoska and Alice Schroeder.

Vasil Garvanliev — wiwibloggs interview

Last week, in between stops in Skopje and Canada, Vasil called round to our William’s for a spot of afternoon tea.

Once the camera is rolling, the singer reveals all. We learn how he transitioned from a child star in his native land to an emigrant that couldn’t speak English in the US.

But Vasil’s story is very much a Cinderella one. Despite missing out on prestigious scholarship opportunities due to visa issues, he managed to get going in Canada. And since then he hasn’t looked back.

Watch the full interview below.

What do you think of the song title? Are you excited to hear the entry? Let us know in the comments below.

Again with teasing! I’ve said this already but why can’t they just release the song? Who cares about the name or album art when I can’t hear it.

I have a very open mind about this. North Macedonia scored quite possibly the least-likely comeback short of San Marino last year (seven years of non-qualifications screeching to a halt with a jury vote win) and I’d like to see them build on that momentum. I think they finally figured out that no, the songs weren’t necessarily the problem (Dance Alone and Lost & Found probably could’ve qualified if certain things were fixed). The problem was either live vocals being off or really really bad staging torpedoing songs with great studio cuts. Proud solved both problems in one fell swoop,… Read more »

I still think its sad that both Let Me Love You and Nesto Sto Kje Ostane would have qualified if that stupid 10th-place-decided by jury rule was not implemented back then, since they both came tenth and would have guaranteed two more finals for North Macedonia any other year. But oh well, I’m really looking forward to Vasil’s song. Let’s hope North Macedonia can pull a Bulgaria and keep this momentum going!

Very good points. My only concern for this year is the staging. Vasil is a great singer, and North Macedonia could send great studio cuts even as FYROM (2017 being the best example of this), but the staging for Proud was minimal to non existent, which was great for the song, but that approach only works for ballads

Ok, I’ll try.

It’s a….good title? In fact, they’re three of the better letters in the alphabet. Think N.Macedonia’s onto a winner here. Everyone can relate to “you”. 😉

I read that the composers are members of far right parties in North Macedonia and i am afraid that the song will be lyrically controversial regarding the name dispute. Politics should stay out of the competition.

But isn’t Vasil an openly gay singer? How does that work? If they were far-right, wouldn’t they not want to work with him in the first place?

far right agenda varies. In North Macedonia their agenda is regarding “Macedonia” and nationalistic issues

If the lyrics included any content like that the EBU would disqualify it. Remember, Dustin the freaking Turkey had to change the lyrics to “Irlande Douze Points” because he said “Macedonia” instead of “FYR Macedonia.” North Macedonia themselves couldn’t get away with anything like that. They’re not dumb.

Here we go again for the 1000th time. When will people get that an ethnic song can be equal as generic as an pop song or an balkan ballad. I have heard similar songs to Italy, Latvia, Spain. So if you are going to have this generic talk all the time. Then all of those 3 are generic to. Then nothing is original.

Im tired of all this countries which are trying to build a hype..why not to present the whole package – song, music video, lyrics etc..what’s the point in presenting just a title??

Personally, I like a bit of hype – lots of artists and band release a song title and cover art in advance. However, it’s more tiresome when they drop subtle and rather useless hints for consecutive weeks, rather like Spain did this year.

You who put minuses here are so superficial.. Vasil is more like Jacques in a sense – capable of singing pop and opera, not that he is going to sing that awkward song Jacques did.. jesus, hold your horses… comparing him to Slavko is a bit disrespectful.. Slavko may be a good actor or entertainer, but not really a singer.. Vasil however .. well we know from the interview.. so, get sensible before clicking minus.. oh.. and Jacques also, except for that weird song is a fantastic singer, great vocal.. so i don’t see how this comparison gets minuses by… Read more »

I got so excited when I read the title of this article, and the “a Valentine’s gift” that followed the title, assuming it was the song release. Alas, it was just the song title! Girl, that ain’t a gift! That’s like your man telling you that he is going to give you a ring on Valentines day, and then he miscalls you from his phone on Valentine’s day! Ain’t nobody got time fo dat!

Ethnic songs are generic to. i have heard 1000 ethnic songs so they are generic because they all sound the same. Everytime you call something generic. I will tell you that a pop song is as much generic as an ethnic song.

It makes sense when you consider that the Head of Delegation has made it explicitly clear that no, they aren’t in it to win it, they just want to do well and bring more awareness to their little country because it’s too damn small to actually host Eurovision if they won. Also, i questioned a broadcaster-sanctioned account selling San Marino 2021 condoms.

You know what? San Marino should do themselves a favor and ask one of the contestants from Sanremo 2020 if they’d like to represent them. That in itself would be awesome. And as an Italian, they got my full permission, lol.
