The semi-finals are over.

But four spots in the Melodifestivalen 2020 final lineup remain open.

And they’ll be decided by the four duels of Andra Chansen next weekend in Eskilstuna.

Broadcaster SVT has just announced the pairings for the duels.

They are as follows:

Andra Chansen 2020 Duels

Duel 1:

Anis don Demina – “Vem e som oss”
Ellen Benediktson & Simon Peyron – “Surface”

Duel 2:

Malou Prytz – “Ballerina”
Paul Rey – “Talking In My Sleep”

Duel 3:

Felix Sandman – “Boys with Emotions”
Frida Öhrn – “We Are One”

Duel 4:

Mendez feat. Alvaro Estrella – “Vamos amigos”
Drängarna – “Piga och dräng”

The duels are direct head-to-heads and the winner will advance to the final.

Who will win each duel?

Producers pair acts for the duels using two rules.

The first is that acts from the same semi-final do not compete against one another. The second is that an act that placed third in a semi-final is paired against an act that came fourth in another.

With the pairings, you can infer who is likely to win each duel.

For starters Anis don Demina looks set to top Duel 1. He’s wracked up over 700k streams since his song was released and hit the Top 5 on Sweden’s Spotify chart.

Upbeat Swedish party songs such have also typically performed well at the Andra Chansen stage. Acts like Samir &a Viktor and Panetoz have advanced from the duels with songs in a similar style to Anis. By contrast “Surface” is a more subdued number. Ellen and Simon have great chemistry, but the staging was quite dark and moody, which may compare unfavourably against “Vem e Som Oss”.

Duel 2 may be a more even pairing. That’s because Paul and Malou are neck-and-neck in terms of Spotify streams. Their songs are also different styles: Paul has a subdued but modern ballad, Malou a Sia-style foot-stomper. Keeping in mind the fact third and fourth placed acts are put together, things may slightly be in Paul’s favour, as it seems more likely he is the third-placer of the two acts. But this is not a foregone conclusion.

There’s little doubt however, that Felix Sandman will win Duel 3. He has wracked up over a million streams and is one of the biggest names in the competition. Frida Öhrn has a profile too, but her staging is almost non-existent, and she’s unfortunate enough to find herself up against one of this year’s slickest stage shows.

The final duel is difficult to read. Méndez advanced from this stage of the competition in 2018, but he had a far stronger song then too. Drängarna have a marginal lead on Spotify – around 40k streams – but are also singing in Swedish which can provoke different reactions at Andra Chansen. It has been four years since a Swedish-language song advanced from this stage of the competition.

Acts will also make tweaks to performances before they take the stage. In particular acts that have had longer since their semi-finals have had more time to innovate on their original performances.

Come on, I want Felix to win whole Melodifestivalen 2020! Support him Sweden and show him some love. This is a top 10 Eurovision song in Rotterdam.

Why is this? Duels between Felix and Frida, Malou and Paul are obviously much better than the other two. Do they really want some fillers in the finals, so they think they have to eliminate more good songs before that? When I make my top 28, of course that one part of the pair will have to be placed higher, but I don’t see a big gap in quality in any of these pairings. That makes for an unpredictable show, I guess, but just as much for a more apathetic reaction afterwards. Hmm…

it is amazing that if not for Anis, Sweden might not have a single song in Swedish in the final…that would be a first…in the lasts few years, they have been down to 2 songs in Swedish

funny how France is having a heart attack for having Swedes do a bilingual song for them, and the Swedes don’t bat an eyelash by the lack of Swedish language songs in the final

I really wish Malou & Paul weren’t put up against each other, they were 2 of my favourites, I think that’s the hardest duel to predict, I think could easily go either way. Looking at first, I thought Felix was lock in for the final, but now I’m not so sure he is, I was a little surprised to see Frida go to Andra Chansen, so maybe she could potentially be the one to take him out. If I had to choose 4 to go through from here, I would choose Ellen & Simon, Malou, Frida & Drangarna. This is… Read more »

Well, this is unfair. Both Felix and Frida deserve the final, meanwhile Mendez and Drangarna should get together to watch it on tv.

….Can someone tell me what the point of Andra Chansen is? I’m not trying to insult it or anything, but I just don’t see a point in doing it. They’re just competing to invite back songs that have already been pretty much decided aren’t good enough to win anyway. Like, it’s already been decided in the semi finals that these songs aren’t good enough…

Has a song that’s been in Andra Chansen ever won the grand final before?

There is no point. The entry that did win in 2013 was horrible. So it must be for commercial reasons.

The reason is for keeping it interesting. Before there was only 2 songs advancing from the second chance. But now there are 4 songs. Why not let 3 songs advance directly to the final? Because we want tension in the show. They are still in the competition but not guaranteed a spot in the final. And since some years ago they release all songs from a heat that has not yet gone directly to final. This means we have time to learn to like the songs that were maybe not the best ones. Some songs of course needs some more… Read more »

I sense they want to avoid too many female singers in the final to compete against Dotter/Anna. Frida would definitely steel some points there from Anna as she is a far better singer.

In a way I’m OK with this duels as they usually don’t deliver winners, but could prevent a song to win. If Felix and Paul also qualify, the chances of Robin and Victor will decrease.

the song is low on spotify tho, just like malou’s song one week ago, i don’t think radio payola will convince swedes to vote for him. it’ll be a tight race.

I think duel 4 and 2 are the hardest to predict.. cause all 4 are worthy finalists.
I can easily see Sandman and Benediktsson win their heats. Now I want Paul Rey but think Frida Örn is more accesable. And I guess Drängarna over Mendez

Judging from the duels we can see how they placed in their semi-finals. I believe it was like this:

Duel 1: Anis don Demina 3rd VS Ellen Benediktson & Simon Peyron 4th
Duel 2: Malou Prytz 3rd VS Paul Rey 4th
Duel 3: Felix Sandman 4th VS Frida Öhrn 3rd
Duel 4: Mendez feat. Alvaro Estrella 3rd VS Drängarna 4th

Keeping my fingers tightly crossed for Ellen & Simon next Saturday who totally killed it tonight, if they were to lose their duel against ADM I fell it’d be the biggest andra chansen robbery at Mello in years.

Malou vs Paul will be quite close, Felix will easily walk over Frida(a shame cause she was sweet tonight)

I knew Mendez & Alvaro would be pitted against Drängarna!

Unfortunately I can see ADM beating Ellen & Simon and yes, it would be a robbery. Knowing swedish people and how AC usually works it will most likely happen

I think Ellen and Simon can do it if the age group thing works but Anis’ song is the most successful in the charts there (from AC) so Idk.
It will be close I guess

Don’t get the point of ‘Andra Chansen?; they didn’t win their semi’s so what are their chances to win the final? Did it ever happen the a song from ?Andra Chansen? went on to win the final??

The problem with the semi-finals is that only the Swedish public decides who goes further, with no jury involved. Juries can make a huge difference in the final placement, especially that they’re international. Take Ace Wilder for example in 2014 – she placed 2nd in her semifinal and could have even been 3rd (so an Andra Chansen duelist), but the international juries absolutely loved her.

The point is to get a second chance. It is usually for songs that aren’t immediate but needs some warming up too. To get to know them. True AC rarely wins but they can do well in final. Alcazar went to AC in 2003 and got that year’s biggest MF hit. And Sean Banan in 2012 didn’t make it to final from AC in 2012 but still got massive airplay and streaming sales..
