Portugal’s RTP just closed its doors on the semi-finals of Festival da Canção 2020. Tonight, the second semi-final took place. Eight songs battled for the last four spots in the grand final and the results are in.

A combination of jury and televote determined that Jimmy PTomás Luzia, Kady and Elisa Rodrigues will grace the final stage in the city of Elvas, next week.

Portugal’s Festival da Canção 2020 semi-final two results

The second semi-final took place in Lisbon’s RTP headquarters. 50% of the result came from a professional jury that included Eurovision 2019 star Conan Osiris. The remaining 50% from televote. The qualifiers were announced in random order.

One thing we learned from last week is that being one of the early favourites does not guarantee you a spot in the final – cough cough Blasted. So tonight we were in for quite a number of unexpected surprises. This week, wiwibloggs poll winners Dubio feat. +351 were left at the gates of the grand final.

After an intense qualifiers announcement, the four acts joining last weeks qualifiers are Jimmy P with “Abensonhado”, Tomás Luzia with “Mais real que o amor”, Kady with “Diz Só” and Elisa Rodrigues with “Não voltes mais”.

Kady – “Diz Só” live at semi-final two of Festival da Canção 2020

Elisa Rodrigues – “Não voltes mais” live at semi-final two of Festival da Canção 2020

Unfortunately, it’s the end of the line for Dubio feat. +351, Luiz Caracol & Gus Liberdade, Judas and Cláudio Frank

Portugal’s Festival da Canção 2020 Grand Final Acts

Tonight’s semi-final concluded the search for the eight finalists that will perform in Elvas on March 7. The running order is yet to be determined.

  • Elisa – “Medo de sentir”
  • Elisa Rodrigues – “Não voltes mais”
  • Filipe Sambado – “Gerbera amarela do Sul”
  • Jimmy P – “Abensonhado”
  • Kady – “Diz só”

Too bad Cegueira didnt go to the final. At least Movimento is there.

None of these would be a competitive entry. The winner will come from the 1st SF.

For me, this year, wiwi is cancelled. 🙁
I love you guys but reacting to only 3 songs from the 1st semi (what was clearly an effort in disguise), posting only 2 interviews… What is happening? At least a reaction to the recaps or something. You might not have the time, you might not be interested in FdC, but as an Eurovision fan, I want to know more about semis and finals from other countries as well. I’m truly sad. I know that melfest brings you clicks but as a bona fide esc website I expected more. :/

Stretching their legs like a yoga class in this kind of song, you really think it suits the song? (to the people who disliked my honest comment!)

Wasn’t a fan of the audio version but Jimmy P really had me on this semi, it’s a big risk and he would probably not do well but I can totally picture this in the Eurovision stage! Plus he probably has more resources to invest on staging comparing to the others. Barbara and Jimmy P are certainly the front runners to win the final, closely followed by Elisa but she needs to polish her performance a lot if you don’t feel it, it doesn’t work! Kady was good but her song has limited potencial I would bet in a fourth… Read more »

I love the way Portuguese friends pronounce “Diz Só”, it’s different from the Brazilian way. It’s cute.

Not a big fan of any of these sorry, I always thought this was the weaker semi. I can’t see any of these translating well across Europe.

Personally I would go with Movimento, we need more lively songs, and this is definitely one. And please not Passé Partout, I think I might actually cry in horror if that one gets through.

Be prepared to cry. It’s going to win. And the lively songs will come from the internals. Stop obsessing over up tempo songs.

Overall boring semifinal. I don’t have a strong opinion on the qualifiers. Diz Só is a nice song and it was a solid performance. Não Voltes Mais is not an outstanding song, even with the ethnic sounds. Elisa was the best singer of the night and her performance made her go through. Abensonhado…. well… its rap… I guess it stands out just for that reason. The song has meaningful lyrics but has no melody whatsoever. The other qualifier makes me fall asleep. Cegueira is the best song, but performing first ruined their chances as the performance wasn’t that strong. Maybe… Read more »

The real shocker for me was Judas not passing. I mean… what a performance! Dancing the way he did without once getting off-key… Never seen in the FdC! And the song came really alive on stage. Such a shame. I am super happy with Jimmy P and Kady. Their life performances were great. Finally someone got some thought into the staging, but without being “weird” about it. ( don’t get me wrong, I loved Sambado’s or last year’s Surma or Conan’s staging, they just weren’t appealing for the masses)

Judas did a great performance. The problem is the song. Its way too repetitive.

I agree that the chorus was too repetitive lyrically and musically and I guess this is what killed the song. But that beat… it’s just great,

Surprised Tomás made it through. I would’ve went with Luiz and Gus but it wasn’t like something really good missed out. The half-decent songs in this SF got through and the better songs in SF1 got through.
Should be an excellent final.

Bernardo, please ask RTP why they stage these songs like they are auditions instead of being a real television programme. I see videos of The Voice Portugal on youtube with amateurs that look like they are more professionally done than these performances. It’s so shocking. It’s horrible to see the audience look so bored on camera…who puts the audience behind the performers?! it makes no sense. They should get whoever produces The Voice Portugal to do Festival da Cancao

Jimmy, Kady and Elisa were much more convincing than the rest in this semi. Some of the other artists seemed nervous. Don’t know how Portuguese viewers feel about rap, but maybe Jimmy can be a surprise in the final (though I still prefer the songs of the 1st semi). Too bad “Cegueira” hasn’t made it, but the performance wasn’t good. Hope to hear more from Dubio and +351 (found out during the show that they’re too separate bands that joined forces, one of the guys in one band is the brother of one of the guys in the other).

Nothing I liked in either semi, totally dire unlistenable tripe. They ruined any chance they had.

There has been rap before. The first time was in 1995 with the UK, which was a great song actually for the time

Rap Is difficult to present ina way it still has bounce and rhythm and texture that someone can enjoy who doesn’t speak your language. Jimmy P if selected is literally asking to come dead last. It doesn’t even have a nice backing track to enjoy.

Big Bro thank which didn’t win in the UK in 2007 was rap done well. If bloody John Barrowman wasn’t so enthusiastic about Scooch history could have been very different.

Sad for Dubio ft. +351 🙁 But then I kinda expected, we needed more power on that live show, and not so dark.. It felt kinda lost. Still, they should have took the spot of Tomás Luzia, nice guy with great voice, but too shy and nervous for this. The rest of the finalists I’ve already predicted them. So far, for the final: 1. Elisa or Bárbara; 3. Throes;

I’m so sad to see that Dubio feat. +351 were eliminated. Well now, I’m definitely rooting for Medo de Sentir, even though I’m pretty sure it’s going to be Passe-partout..
