dansk-melodi-grand-prix-2020-denmark-eurovision

Calling all vikings and people who sit on oversized chairs. Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020 is upon us and Denmark will choose its entry for Rotterdam this Saturday 7 March. It’s also a special occasion for Denmark — this is the 50th edition of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has flown into Copenhagen to review the ten acts and try to spot a potential Eurovision contender.

Natalie

1. Ben & Tan – “Yes”

It’s always great to hear something a little bit acoustic and raw at Eurovision. This is some very high quality folk pop. It’s got so much energy and the repeated chorus by the strings makes everything much more special. It just never really gets boring to me. From the first line to the paired-back ending, it’s all enchanting.

2. Jasmin Rose feat. RoxorLoops – “Human”
3. Maja & De Sarte Sjæle – “Den eneste goth i Vejle”
4. Isam B – “Bølger”
5. Emil – “Ville ønske jeg havde kendt dig”

Robyn

1. Maja & De Sarte Sjæle – “Den eneste goth i Vejle”

Look, I can’t not put this song as number one. “Den eneste goth i Vejle” represents me. It perfectly captures the feeling of being a teen goth, spending time alone in your bedroom listening to music from UK indie legends of the 1980s. It’s a decadently melancholic feeling, the perfect soundtrack for spending warm summer days indoors. I have no idea what this song is doing in the Danish Eurovision selection, but I’m very happy that it’s here.

2. Ben & Tan – “Yes”
3. Jamie Talbot – “Bye Bye Heaven”
4. Benjamin Kissi – “Faith”
5. Isam B – “Bølger”

Florian

1. Jasmin Rose feat. RoxorLoops – “Human”

This song is taking an unexpected road. Rather than building up to a contemporary pop drop, this takes an epic turn to a somewhat mysterious hook. Their voices blend together really well and create a very strong cut here. Sonically, this stands out among its competitors and the only way they could go wrong this is the staging, really.

2. Kenny Duerlund – “Forget It All”
3. Ben & Tan – “Yes”
4. Maja & De Sarte Sjæle – “Den eneste goth i Vejle”
5. Sander Sanchez – “Screens”

Barnabas

1. Maja & De Sarte Sjæle – “Den eneste goth i Vejle”

This is an easy call for me. Since the Danish selection isn’t really known for its diversity, this moody indie track really created its own atmosphere as I listened through the songs. It probably won’t win it all, but heck, it really stands out, in a positive way.

2. Sys Bjerre – “Honestly”
3. Benjamin Kissi – “Faith”
4. Sander Sanchez – “Screens”
5. Ben & Tan – “Yes”

Åri

1. Jamie Talbot – “Bye Bye Heaven”

Sometimes all you need is a track that doesn’t try too hard. Jamie Talbot delivers without pushing anything explosive or grandiose down your throat. “Bye Bye Heaven” is a sweet and simplistic song, which generally is something I would love to have more of in Eurovision. After last Saturday’s results had me exasperated, I’m proud to say I’d be happy with my entire top five as the DMGP winners.

2. Kenny Duerlund – “Forget It All”
3. Jasmin Rose feat. RoxorLoops – “Human”
4. Sys Bjerre – “Honestly”
5. Maja & De Sarte Sjæle – “Den eneste goth i Vejle”

Calvin

1. Kenny Duerlund – “Forget It All”

I’m very thankful that this song qualified. Kenny Duerlund gives us a contemporary radio pop song. Obviously, this song doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s an absolutely solid track with a nice rise towards the end. With a vocal performance on point and fitting staging, this one might surprise thanks to its mainstream appeal and likeability.

2. Ben & Tan – “Yes”
3. Benjamin Kissi – “Faith”
4. Sys Bjerre – “Honestly”
5. Jasmin Rose feat. RoxorLoops – “Human”

Antranig

1. Jasmin Rose feat. RoxorLoops – “Human”

I’ve never struggled to choose my favourite as much as this. There is absolutely nothing to separate “Human” and “Yes” for me — either of them would make a fantastic choice for Denmark. “Human” is slightly better melodically but “Yes” has a more memorable hook. I suppose it will all come down to which one is performed better live in Copenhagen. You have two chances to get this right, Denmark.

2. Ben & Tan – “Yes”
3. Kenny Duerlund – “Forget It All”
4. Emil – “Ville ønske jeg havde kendt dig”
5. Benjamin Kissi – “Faith”

What do you think? Which song should win Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020? Let us know in the comments below.

Glad to see “Den eneste goth i Vejle” in your tops. I don’t think it will win cause it’s Denmark but the song is so cool and nostalgic. The melody, the riff, the soft voice, … Love it.

I have to think of it all the time when I’m in the bus or the subway. I wonder why….

DR has confirmed that the show will take place, but no audience will be allowed into the arena due to covid-19 🙁

Am I the only one who likes “Suddenly” the most?

For me it’s between Yes & Human. It will depend on their live performance.

There have just been a press release: The Melodi Grand Prix will be without a live audience in the Arena because of Corona.

I always enjoy watching the Nordic finals but this one leaves me a little cold. Best of luck Denmark.

When I was asking for an advice on which NF to listen to first, Sabrina said that some of the Danish songs don’t require much attention. I conclude that she was indeed right. Most of these songs are pleasant. Actually, not one is aggressively bad. At the same time, there are no real standouts either. I don’t expect Copenhagen 2021. My personal favorite is Emil. I find his song very sweet and the lyrics heartwarming. I don’t expect him to win, though. My second favorite and expected winner is Say Yes. It’s a nice and energetic song I’d like to… Read more »

Though I feel Denmark took a step on the right direction (they kept their cute and warm usual vibe, but adding more personality to the entries), it’s not like any of these songs are much complex and require deeper appreciation. They are what they are, they’re very straight-forward and for some of them this is actually a good thing (including the frontrunners, “Yes” and “Human”). “Yes” and ““Den eneste goth i Vejle” would make me happy.

So glad I’m not the only one who prefers “Den eneste goth i Vejle”. Thanks Robyn and Barnabas! You share my thoughts exactly 🙂

same here, love that track. It makes me long for the summer. It’s a “music first” option.

I’m also glad to see it getting some love from the Wiwijury. But I always knew Robyn would support this one. 🙂

Human would give them their best chance in the actual contest…and it’s in the pimp slot. It might just squeak through.

There’s no song that I love but there’s things to like about Jasmin, Kenny, Maja, Benjamin and Sander.
As a result, I think qualification will be difficult for Denmark this year but this is a decent selection. Just wish there was an obvious standout!
