Update at 25:55 GMT on November 23: Wiwibloggs have reached out to Hurricane’s PR rep who told us, “Yes, we confirm at Eurovision 2021.” So the below is CONFIRMED!
Serbian media are reporting that Hurricane has been given the return ticket to Rotterdam. The three-piece girl group will reportedly be Serbia‘s act at Eurovision 2021. But at this stage, it’s not clear how their song will be selected.
OGAE Serbia reports that Hurricane’s management has confirmed the news, however they note that broadcaster RTS has not yet officially made an announcement.
But word has also come from RTS’s Editor-in-Chief of Entertainment Olivera Kovačević. Speaking to news site 24 Sedam, she confirmed Hurricane’s selection and revealed more about their song selection process:
“Hurricane will represent Serbia next year if Eurovision is held as announced. The song they will perform with will be chosen separately. They will not perform with this year’s song, but we will especially choose the song with which they will present themselves at Eurovision.”
The news site asked Hurricane member — and Eurovision 2016 solo act — Sanja Vučić for her reaction. She initially said she hadn’t heard anything about it, explaining “I am not sure whether we will represent Serbia, or I am just very uninformed.”
But when told about Kovačević’s comment, Sanja reportedly looked delighted but would only say “I’m really looking forward to it! But now I can’t say anything more on that topic, because I don’t know any details yet.”
Hurricane’s journey to Eurovision 2021
Girl group Hurricane were originally selected to represent Serbia at Eurovision 2020 when they won national final Beovizija 2020 with the song “Hasta la vista”. But sadly, with the cancellation of Eurovision 2020, their dream was put on hold.
Two members of the group have already been to Eurovision. Sanja Vučić represented Serbia at Eurovision 2016 with her song “Goodbye (Shelter)”. The year before, Ksenija Knežević sang backing vocals for her father, the popular Montenegrin singer Knez.
But now it appears that Sanja, Ksenija and third member Ivana Nikolić will make it to Eurovision.
It isn’t clear how Hurricane’s song for Rotterdam will be selected. The song could simply be internally selected, or RTS might hold a national final to choose the song, similar to what Israel is doing to select Eden Alene’s song.
What do you think? What sort of song should Hurricane take to Eurovision 2021? How should they select their song for Rotterdam? Tell us your thoughts below!
Okay ONE GOOD THING to happen in 2020 I’m so excited
Happy they are coming back even after Serbia kinda wore off me in a week.. but bows the chance to make their songs better and I know they are capable of that!
I am not a fan of Hurricane but I am happy for them that they will have a second chance to represent Serbia in Rotterdam next year. I hope for a better song than “Hasta la vista” because I didn’t like the song.
Great news, I’m so excited to see them do a bombastic performance!!!
For me, it’s two from my top 3 as well, while only 1 out of my bottom 3. Hasta la vista barely managed to escape that group on my list. 😉
Tibor and Colin, what were your top 3 and bottom 3? Never ranked the entries, wouldn’t be ready to pick a top out of the blue (it would probably be between Diodato, Jeangu, The Roop and Victoria), but Hurricane would narrowly escape from the bottom 3, because France, Estonia and Cyprus really disappointed me with their choices. And they were fun to watch and dance with at least, even if the song was weak.
My top 3 are Switzerland, Italy and Romania. Bulgaria and Netherlands are both in my top 10 and Lithuania is my 11th. 🙂
My bottom 3 are San Marino, Cyprus and France. Estonia is in my bottom 10, tho. Serbia is in my bottom 5, also escaping bottom 3 for the sheer fact it actually does what it intends to do pretty well. It’s not for me, though.
Switzerland is on my top 10 too and when I stopped working on my ranking Romania was fighting with Australia for the last spot (mainly because both national final performances weren’t as good as the studio versions in my opinion). So, our lists were probably pretty close. Not just on the top, but also on the bottom. San Marino’s song was kinda like Serbia, but it didn’t put me in a good mood like Hurricane’s. “Hasta la Vista” had great “hair whipping vibe”, which may not win contests, but works for parties.
Yes, Tibor, our lists would be quite different. I like Benny too, but he would be around 15th. Aksel’s song was growing on me, but I don’t think it would be enough to get him on the first half of the table. And VAL’s did absolutely nothing for me, but I haven’t listened to it a lot (before the contest was cancelled, I was reviewing my top 20). On the other hand, I suppose our bottom 10 (and also Colin’s) would be extremely similar (your take on Victoria would be a huge exception of course). I must ironically congratulate the… Read more »
Congrats! I wasn’t the biggest fan of Hasta la vista (it’s in my bottom 5 for 2020). Still, these girls are an actual group, not an assembly made only for occasion, and they know what they are doing on stage. I can see them making something energetic and striking, whether it’s up my personal alley or not.
Happy to see another act coming back. Hasta La Vista was a big bop and I believe that they’ll do an amazing job next year. Now only: Armenia, Ireland, Macedonia, Poland, Russia and UK (I personally think that everyone there will be chosen except James)
I think James will be chosen, alongside the rest, hence the UK’s silence. He revealed he made submissions with Iain James (who I have wanted to write our entry for many years) and Ed Drewitt, and the coordinator of the BBC’s documentary on him, which saw all 40 other acts give video messages, implied that James’ submissions meant first refusal. All 6 will (I personally feel that if Athena was a native Yerevani rather than from the diaspora, she’d have been named as soon as the show was cancelled, but the will from both sides for her to represent is… Read more »
Did he actually confirm the submission? I haven’t seen that. I think it’s 50/50 for James, Lesley and Vasil… But I think Athena, Little Big and Alicja are coming back.
*It was implied, though not confirmed. I would accept him not singing if him, Ed and Iain write the song for someone else. Iain co-wrote not only Running Scared and Love Kills, but also some of my fave songs of all time like Wings and Read All About It. I also would expect the lack of fanfare and speculation to count in his favour, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it is him or not only when the song is unveiled, given how secretive we are. I personally dislike secrecy, but maybe it could be for the greater good… *I… Read more »
Personally never found them that great.I found it to hysterical, aggressive even. More a fan-favourite than a good song.
But good luck to them agian, and to the fans I guess
I was going to agree, but I see that you got many minuses, so I’d better not do it.
I would like fans to decide the song, particularly as Hurricane come across as versatile and they are very multilingual, so fans should decide if the song is in English or Serbian, or both.
I liked Hasta La Vista, and it was full of bombast, Serbia’s best since Beauty Never Lies and worth a top 15 place.
Why would fans want a song in English ?
Hurricane have released plenty of songs in English, and many of their fans probably like them. And a bilingual song would make sense.
So if RTS editor in chief said that, then it’s done. Hurricane definitely for Serbia.
No doubt the three released singles are testing the water in some form.
That is rather speculative news, but perhaps understandable given the circumstances. Best wishes to Hurricane. (The group, not the weather phenomenon.)
Now Little Big left to be selected and all is good
And Athena
I think Armenia will withdraw sadly
Why? I mean the war with Azerbaijan has finished and at the end of the day Azerbaijan had direct war with Artsakh, not Armenia. If Bosnia could participate during bloody war, I don’t know why Armenia where war wasn’t going on couldn’t.
Armenia was fighting with Artsakh, so Azerbaijan was directly in war with them. Armenia has martial law and protests at the moment and it doesn’t look like those will calm down. At the end of the day, Armenia gets to choose and if they want to sort themselves out before participating then so be it. Remember, Eurovision is not a priority for a lot of broadcasters, let alone one that was just in a war
They’re a proper group with a back catalogue of success before their ESC selection. I have no worries about them presenting a great song if they are to be selected.
