All will become known at 20:35 CET on Saturday 5 December. That’s when Estonian TV is set to release the 24 songs competing in the 13th edition of Eesti Laul. But while we wait for the 2021 entries to drop, we can reveal the one act which has left our readers giddy with anticipation — Jüri Pootsmann!
Jüri Pootsmann is the Eesti Laul 2021 act you are most excited for before the songs are released
Almost three weeks ago, shortly after the line-up for Estonia’s Eurovision 2021 selection was revealed, we asked a very important question — Which Eesti Laul 2021 act are you the most excited for?
Hundreds of you let your voices be heard by voting in our poll. And after counting 1,819 votes, we can confirm that Jüri Pootsmann is the act that’s left y’all gagging. The “Play” crooner hoovered up support, capturing 276 votes — that’s 20.67% of all votes cast.
The Eurovision 2016 star previously revealed that his 2021 entry, “Magus melanhoolia”, was several years in the making. It “stood on the shelf for quite a long time”. The song is a ballad with a “strange twist”. Jüri adds that he can’t put the number in a box, describing it as beautiful and slow, yet also hard. It touches upon themes of self-awareness and pride.
Not far behind is the reigning Eesti champion Uku Suviste. The “What Is Love” singer picked up 302 votes or 16.6% of all votes cast.
Uku confirmed that “The Lucky One” will once again revolve around the topic of love. However, this time around, he says that he’s approached things differently. While he doesn’t want to give too much away, he teases that this time he is “talking about something that broke, but there is such a positive outlook for things”.
Earlier, Eesti Laul producers revealed that Uku did not have to use his free pass to make the semi-finals. Apparently his song went through the selection process and advanced on its own merit. The show’s boss even said that he thinks Uku’s entry is stronger in 2021 than in 2020.
The top three is completed by Eurovision 2014’s Tanja. The “Amazing” popstar took attracted 235 votes or 12.92% of all votes cast.

Eesti Laul keeps running on worn tyres. Unbelieveable! A great artist like Janek submitted his masterpiece “gemini” to eesti laul in 2016 and 2017 and it got rejected. This year I’ve heard 2 of his songs that got rejected but they were just masterpiece and would have definitely made Eurovision’s top 5! Unbelieveable! Eesti Laul jury doesn’t want Estonia to win. Look him up on sporify – Janek – Gemini
Uku has nice song! In my opinion it’s his best attempt in last three years and this song is much better than last year’s one. It doesn’t differ so much than What Love Is, but some details and differences make it sound much better.
I also like Jüri’s song very much from what I heard from snippet, but I still can’t find the full version of the song :/
the tempo is the same , this is smart because it really suits his voice.
But the production is far more contemporary and current.
The Lucky One definitely sounds like a step up from What Love Is. I wish Uku luck to win again. Is it good enough to qualify to the final in May 2021? Depends on the quality of other Semi final 2 entries from both returning and new artists. Yes, there’s the risk someone else might win for Estonia other than Uku, but we’ll have to see.
Uku has this is in the bag.
It is interesting how the same artist had in 2020 and entry that was so dated and old fashion and in 2021 he brings such a contemporary, modern sound managing to show his powerful vocals.
What love is was a lot better imo. I don’t get why so many eurofans are such suckers for cheap uptempo song.
What Love Is is a cliched, dated, blase, boring, mess. If it was more uptempo I wouldn’t have liked it any more. It was a bad song and mark my words would have been last in the semi. Period.
What makes his new song better? It sounds so cheap.
Can you guys just agree that both of them are not good?
Yes lol.
Seems like a nice person though.
Sorry but his new song is not uptempo and its not cheap. Did you listen to another song?
Koit is the only good song in eesti laul but it is really good.
Jüri song is too short.
I can’t find full songs, only snippets, but the best is by FAR Jüri. Such a step up from Play. I also appreciate that Uku also stepped up with a better song. Sissi stepped down from the wonderful ‘Strong’ however, and Koit’s effort isn’t bad. Wingman feels decent as well. Will need to listen to them when they all come out in full but Jüri’s is almost certainly my winner.
Uku song for me might be better than last year, but it’s still not that good..cliche lyrics and might fit better the contest 15 years ago.. But any way it will win probably.
I like What love is better than The lucky one tbh.
15 years ago???? Uku song is so 2021. It follows the pop retro trend that is number 1 all around the world. What are you talking about.
Don’t have to be mad lol.. That’s my opinion
the top four being all four previous estonian representatives, eurofans are so predictable
not you dragging eurofans when you are a eurofan yourself….
Uku’s entry is much better than “What Love is”, even though it shouldn’t have been that difficult to serve something qualitatively stronger.
I think he has potential to win Eesti Laul again.
They are online already
From what I’ve heard so far, Koit Toome’s song is very nice
”What Is Love” Baby don’t hurt me!
Almost every year I’m upset by the result of the Estonian final.
So many great entries were left behind,
but who knows maybe this year will be different.
i’m putting my hope on 2021 being another year for a good estonian song (since, you know, those estonian entries in 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018)
2010, 2011,2014,2016,2017,2019 were also
I agree. Estonia is one of the countries which most often had a good song in the last decade. They were often in my top 10 and never in my bottom 5.
I absolutely *love* Play, but also some of Juri’s other work in Estonian. I really hope to hear another excellent song from him. 🙂
I am also very curious about Uku, Tanja and Koit. I don’t think that What Love Is is necessarily a bad song, but it was too saccharine and typical to make any impact.
Excited for tomorrow!
Ew. Really? Found him so monotone in 2016. Really deserved last place in the semi. Was so boring. Hopefully this song will be better.
i know right… i wasn’t surprised at all when he came last in his semi but somehow ppl were convinced he’d qualify?
I love the Estonian selection, Mick Pedaja’s Seis will forever be one of my all time favourite songs, and it’s such a beautiful language! sounds like elves speaking
So far I’m rooting for Jüri, i loved his last entry and I’m sure he will deliver again! Greetings from sweden
It’s tomorrow! Oh wowww
All music videos of the songs participating in the semi-finals will go to the website https://jupiter.err.ee/ late Saturday evening, after ETV has introduced the songs in a one-hour program. The songs will also go to the homepage of Eesti Laul.
She did, this time it’s a Christmassy (and a bit psychedelic) cover of ‘Amar Pelos Dois”.

Yeah, that video is really artistic, and also, dare I say it, political. I both adore it and loathe it at the same time. Senhit continues to astonish me with every release, what an incredible artist.
Just want to hear Estonian again! Such a beautiful language that Estonia should admire more (same for Finland with Finnish)
I just know Jüri’s song is gonna shook us all, I want him to win so bad. Though also very excited about Gram-of-fun, Heleza, Karl Killing and Egert.
does any Estonian know if Estonians plan to select and vote for Uku again or are they kind open to whatever is the best? 🙂
They always tend to vote for the most mediocre one in the bunch.
Our older women will probably vote for Uku yes
I hope the votes split up between Uku and Koit hahah 🙂
I didn’t like Play all that much but I’ve followed Jüri since then and his work has been phenomenal, especially Täna. Very excited for Magus Melanhoolia.
