Grüezi and hallo from Zurich! Switzerland’s song for Eurovision 2021 has officially been selected. Broadcaster SRF and Gjon’s Tears have revealed more details about the song for Rotterdam and how they found it.
Fans are rightly excited. Mr John and his tears were among the biggest favourites for Eurovision 2021. The Swiss singer surprised everyone with his emotional entry “Répondez-moi”, which served Switzerland away from the dance-pop banger “She Got Me” that took Luca Hänni near the top. But given the hype Switzerland generated two years running, it’s clear SRF can shine in any genre.
Following the cancellation of Eurovision 2020, it wasn’t exactly surprising that SRF decided to send Gjon’s Tears to Eurovision in 2021. But one thing did change dramatically: the process of finding a song.

Gjon’s Tears has selected his Eurovision 2021 song
In a video shared by the broadcaster, Gjon reveals that it felt weird to be the winner right from the start. In 2020 he was entering the internal selection for the chance to sing for Switzerland. But this time around he knew from the start of the process that it was him. He had the right to decide on his own who the songwriters and producers he’d work with would be.
In the video we learn that 13 songs were written and produced at a songwriting camp not only in Switzerland but also in different studios all around Europe. Head of Delegation Reto Peritz confirms that those songs were judged through the two jury system we already know: 20 international music experts and 100 people who can be seen as Eurovision experts voted and gave their opinions about every single song. They also had the opportunity to give Gjon some advice on what he and his teams could do better. They didn’t come to play!
Gjon then shot video performances for all of the songs, which were then judged again. In the end, the best combination of song and performance convinced both juries. Gjon seems to be very happy with the outcome.
In the interview Gjon confirms how unusual and even strange it felt for him to give his personal and much-loved songs to strangers, as the songs’ fate was in their hands. Normally his family and friends are the only people to judge his songs in the beginning. But this time, everything was decided by fans and experts he doesn’t even now.
That being said, Gjon stated that the outcome couldn’t have been better. He and HoD Reto are more than happy – and confident – with the selected song. Reto even says that this entry will definitely stand out in Rotterdam, that it fits Gjon extremely well and that it could do very well at next year’s competition. Could it even be a candidate for the victory?
It’s not known if the 2021 entry by Gjon’s Tears will again be sung in French, which genre it plays in or when exactly it will be revealed. But SRF gave us at least one nugget of info: we’ll get to hear the song in the spring. Since Switzerland is known for its long and cold winters, this probably means we can expect the song to be released in March 2021.

Great that Gjon’s Tears has so much love on Wiwibloggs. The 2020 song was my personal favourite, so i’m anxious about the 2021 entry.
I have such high hopes that my internal expectation management system probably should come into action. His 2020 song was a top 5 song imho. So very curious whether he can come up with simular quality. Fingers crossed.

I’m curious about his song because the Swiss entry was my favorite in 2020.
I feel like we should stop comparing this years’ songs to 2020. It feels wrong. It sets an unfair standard. We don’t know how the songs actually would have placed. It’s sad for everyone involved and it just doesn’t feel right. I rather try to forget this pooptruck of a year and the things we missed.

If they’re releasing song as late as March it better be good as it is, since after that you really can’t change anything

If you wait releasing it you can see what others chose. Probably i would have a few good song up my sleave and just tell everybody i chose just to keep the fire burning.
Yes that’s true, but in this case the song has already been chosen so I doubt they have a backup song to go with

Repondez-moi was my winner last year and one of the best Eurovision songs I have ever listened. Gjon is an amazing artist so I believe his new song will also be amazing. He has a lot of talent and I believe that he can be considered a favourite for the win. Expectations are high let’s see what he has come up with 🙂
I think the best one would be lyrical, mystical and with lyrics in French and Albanian. I think Respondez-moi was frank and professional, and would have navigated its poor running order slot (putting it immediately after Iceland in the mid point wasn’t a good sign), but would have been seen as an Arcade rehash, hence I thought it would be a top 10 entry, with an obvious 12 from Albania, but not anywhere near a winner. I think he could be a wild card for definite if there’s a religious vibe to it.
I’m scared for this because I loved Répondez moi so much (it was my favourite last year) that there’s a huge chance it could not be as amazing and I’ll always think of what could’ve been. Let’s hope it is as good because if so Switzerland can win. ?
This is the problem of the ESC 2021. Every single internally reselected artist will reveal his/her song in March. So we will get to listen about like 30 songs in 10 days.
Let’s all wish that what you are saying will be the only problem we have to face in this year’s edition

Israels nf for Eden will take place in 25th January.
Samanta will reveal her song in January.
Spains nf for Blas will take place in January-February.
And there are some national finals that their final will take in February.
I think around 20-25 songs will be revealed in March which is always like that in every year.
All that you mention are true. But there’re only five national finals (so far) to take place in February (or January). They are France, Finland, Norway, Croatia and Lithuania. Those 5 plus the acts you mentioned are the only countries to confirm that they will announce their song before March. 5 + 3 = 8. 41-8 = 33. Let’s say that the national final to choose Hurricane’s song will be held in February too (not confirmed).
