Songs by Eurovision artists in 2020: Team Wiwi’s top tracks (20 to 11)

Incredibly (and perhaps thankfully), 2020 is almost over. And that means one thing — the return of our annual Top Tracks countdown!

As usual, the team from wiwibloggs have voted for their favourite new songs released in 2020 by Eurovision stars. Songs which were selected for Eurovision or competed in national finals were excluded (they’ve been analysed to death in our jury reviews). Artists must have competed at Eurovision as part of the main act to be eligible (but those who were selected for 2020 were also included in the voting).

After reviewing more than 1,000 songs over the course of the year, we finally settled on our top 50. And now we’re ready to share it with y’all. We’ll publish ten tracks daily until New Year’s Eve as we wrap up the year.

20. Blanche – “Fences”

What we said: The Eurovision 2017 singer has dropped another song from her debut album Empire for us to enjoy. “Fences” sees Blanche turn the BPM up a bit and is perhaps her most danceable track to date (at least in the chorus). But, it’s still well within her moody-pop repertoire. A drum beat underlines the song, while electronic instrumentation is added into the chorus to create dynamism. (Jonathan)

19. Mikolas Josef – “Lalalalalalalalalala”

What we said: On September 1 he publicly revealed his battle with anxiety, saying social media had left him feeling like “a wasteland” inside. And now, Mikolas Josef has returned to the spotlight after a nearly year-long hiatus to drop the infectious new single “Lalalalalalalalalala” (that’s la x 10 in case you’re counting). Writing on Instagram ahead of the release, he thanked fans for their ongoing support over the past year — a period during which he dropped his record label and coped with anxiety en route to rebuilding himself. 18. Anna Bergendahl – “Thelma and Louise”

What we said: After placing third at Melodifestivalen 2020, Anna Bergendahl has finally released her “Kingdom Come” follow-up single. “Thelma and Louise” uses a deft blend of country and pop music, creating a modern folk anthem. The song takes inspiration from the 1991 feminist outlaw film Thelma & Louise, with Anna telling her partner in crime “Let’s give them one hell of a story”. It’s a wild ride and brings an epic sound — we hope Anna has the opportunity to perform it live soon! (Robyn)

17. Franka – “Prvi osjećaj”

What we said: At Eurovision 2018 she kept things classy with the stripped-back “Crazy”. Now though, Franka is returning to her popstar roots with “Prvi osjećaj” (First Feeling). “IT’S SHOWTIME”, she announced on Instagram upon the music video’s release. And a show is exactly what Franka gives us. The glitzy video coupled with infectious pop beats is like a siren call to the dance floor. In this summer of gloom, the Croatian hitmaker urges us to embrace the rhythm and move. (Padraig)

16. Sergey Lazarev – “Я не могу молчать”

What we said: Summer is the time of the year when people feel able to let go and have fun. And that’s exactly what Russia’s Sergey Lazarev is doing with his new single “Я не могу молчать” (“I cannot be silent”). After a series of more serious songs, the two-time Eurovision bronze medallist is turning up the BPM and getting ready to party. There’s an abundance of energy in “Я не могу молчать” that quickly flows through the speakers and into the listener; it’s a track that will get everyone up and moving. Speaking about the feeling behind the song on Instagram, Lazarev commented: “This song is for all lovers! Love is a feeling familiar to everyone! When in love, I want to shout about it all over the world !!! Let this song be the song of your summer!” (Jonathan)

15. LOBODA & Pharaoh – “Boom Boom”

What we said: “Every time I start working on a new track, I know what effect I want to achieve! Being different is my priority. Be unpredictable and unexpected.”, LOBODA said upon the release of her new single “Boom Boom”. And Ukraine’s Eurovision 2009 star has certainly done just that. “Boom Boom” moves away from the dance-pop music that brought LOBODA widespread acclaim and towards an almost Little Big style of quirky rave-pop – oh, and there’s a rap break courtesy of Russian artist Pharaoh to mix things up even more. The accompanying music video comes with an 18+ age warning. 14. NAVIBAND – “Iншымi”

What we said: Thanks to Eurovision 2020’s cancellation, NAVIBAND remain the only act to take the Belarusian language to the song contest stage. And while they still sing in their native tongue, the duo’s sound has shifted since 2017 and “Story Of My Life”. “Iншымi” (Others) is an appropriate song for the times we live in. In several posts, NAVIBAND write “We wake up others”. (Padraig)

13. Little Big – “Hypnodancer”

What we said: As we’ve come to expect from Little Big, “Hypnodancer” is a fun upbeat track that will get your foot tapping along from the very first second that it starts playing. The song utilises a mixture of electronic and percussion beats. These come together to create an insanely catchy hook that will easily get stuck in the listener’s head – all the ingredients for what you might call a true bop. In the video, Little Big portray a set of criminals who go around stealing money from various casinos. They utilise Prusikin’s hypnotic dance moves to distract the other casino players before sliding away with their cash. In a fun Easter egg related to their Eurovision 2020 entry, the cards being used during each casino game are none other than Uno cards. (Jonathan)

12. Ben & Tan – “Summer Nights”

What we said: Much like “Yes”, “Summer Nights” is easy listening yet memorable. The song is quite simple lyrically, making it easy to follow along and enjoy. An anthemic instrumental hook drives the song through to the bridge and Ben & Tan’s voices combine for an enchanting final chorus. (Antranig)

11. Tamta (feat. Stephane Legar) – “Yala”

What we said: The word “Yala” can mean a lot of things — come on, let’s go and hurry up to name but a few. But when you pair it with the musical stylings of Queen Tamta, it most definitely means party. Cyprus’ Eurovision 2019 star, who still has our love on “Replay”, has collaborated with Israeli singer, dancer and model Stephane Legar for the track, which comes from her recently released EP Awake. With its blaring sax, Middle Eastern sounds and Stephane’s non-stop swagger, the song is a call to get out and live your life — not tomorrow, but right now. As Tamta sings: “We walk like animals, don’t need no money, we worry about nothing else, just wanna party, so come along let’s go…” (William)
