Since winning Vidbir 2020 with “Solovey”, Go_A have put in a lot of effort in creating their Eurovision 2021 song, including an online songwriting camp. In an interview to Fakty, the band’s frontwoman Kateryna Pavlenko revealed that the group is finalising their entry.
Go_A finalise their Eurovision 2021 entry
Kateryna revealed that there were several “variants”. Nevertheless, the group feels that one particular story is the best in their eyes. Speaking to Fakty, the singer says:
“I won’t say about what the song is, we will wait until the release. I can tell you one thing: again, the folklore of a certain region will put the song [into context]. To me, it seems that we managed to hook the theme that will be interesting for the listeners.”
With “Solovey”, the Ukrainian band dealt with classic themes of the Carpathian region of Ukraine, including the hills, the rues and the groves.
Kateryna also tells Fakty that she thinks that the song will be presented “somewhere in February”. However, she added that the group was going to hurry to make this specific deadline to finalise to project.
The competition is not something the group is too worried about either, as the Go_A lead singer acknowledges:
“We, to be honest, don’t look at participants of other countries as competitors. There are performers, that interest us and with whom we wanted to get acquainted. We really like the participants from Iceland and Switzerland, but we don’t treat them like rivals.
I understand, that in Ukraine, [people] perceive Eurovision as a competition, which you HAVE to win. But we look at it as a possibility to get to know a large amount of interesting people and show one’s artisty for a large audience.”

The Go_A frontwoman thinks that artists should believe in what they sing. Next to that, Kateryna says that it helps her that Go_A write and performe their own music and know what they want to achieve. In addition, she states that a “moral preparation” is important as well due to the immense mental pressure that the contest can bring.
On the question of why Go_A should win Eurovision 2021 for Ukraine, Kateryna answered:
“In the first place, it would be a great story. And it started well, after all, when we won Vidbir in Ukraine, it was very unexpected and cool.
We are going to Eurovision with a specific mission. We absolutely want sing there in the Ukrainian language, to honour Ukrainian folklore and to show, that everything Ukrainian is cool, interesting and is there to love. Not to continue to think that the Ukrainian language, the song and folklore, is something second-rate and has no meaning. We want to increase the focus on our culture and roots, after all it is very important. We aspire to broadcast our love to all the other Ukrainian people.”

Wow. Really love Katya’s answers to the questions. She’s a smart cookie. It shows that you can be incredibly proud of your Ukrainian heritage and want to showcase it, but not at the expense of others or in pursuit of scoring political points. Good music is good entertainment. Great for Go_A.
Also really pleasant to hear her speak so highly of the other participants at Eurovision! That’s a good sign. They are going to be a great act.
I think the broadcaster knows how badly they stuffed up in 2019 and how they easily blew a top 3 finish (nothing was beating Duncan and Mahmood) and so GO_A don’t have to ascribe to the same political pressure as their predecessors.
