The stage for Eurovision France: C’est vous qui décidez was circular. And within that circle we felt the heat of fire, the thrust of dance and the emotion of chanson. Twelve acts sang, but at the end of it all fan favourite Barbara Pravi emerged victorious with her touching ballad “Voilà”. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who wants to hit the stage and share her songs with the world. Well France has spoken et voilà: The Eurovision stage is officially yours.

After the performances, the public voted for their favourites. Seven songs advanced automatically based on the televote alone. They were:

Casanova – Tutti
Cephaz – On A Mangé Le Soleil
21 Juin Le Duo – Peux-Tu Me Dire?
Amui – Maeva
Barbara Pravi – Voilà
Poney X – Amour Fou
An eighth song was then open to be saved by the jury — a so-called “euro-ticket”. That went to LMK with “Magique”.

Loved it even though when you re french and over 30 you heard it a million times during the 90 in pascals sevran s weekly show. I was hoping for surprise and revolutionary propositions, I m just worried it does not exactly pass the « 10 min after the recap which song can you sing along right now ». The sobral effect would mean people would vote for emotions instead of party…after more than a year of lockdown. Yyyeeppp . Maybe i m a debbie downer.

What’s wrong with tradition? One can have tradition and radical innovation in the same contest. Both are good. BTW, the latter very rarely makes it in the top 10, if you care about the placing.
That was my least favorite song of the bunch but I admit her victory was fair: spot-on vocals, intriguing camera work and overall artistry and production values made it a clear winner. On the other hand, this has zero chances at winning the ESC. Lots of chirping in French equals few public votes. But good luck I guess.

Most people watch eurovision from a television anyway so how exactly does the absence of a crowd make the whole contest “useless”?

OMG!!! Wow wow wow! I am mesmerized!!! Finally has France something for which it can really be proud of. With this song only has 2021 already become a million times better musically than 2020. Instant top 10 of this century for me. I am really happy for this little marvel. I wish France to win this year. That’s settled. (And the that staging… OMG!!!!)
It’s very artsy and old school. I can see why people like it but this isn’t for me since I’m a fan of more simple and catchier melodies. The lyrics are indeed beautiful and powerful but the song as a whole didn’t make me feel any strong emotion. Even though I don’t like this very much I’m glad people are already finding songs they like so strongly this early on.
Juries are not supposed to completely agree with the televote – if they did, it would defeat the whole purpose of their existence. They are there to reward quality, not popularity.

Understanding French, I get why it won, the lyrics are beautiful and her voice is amazing. With that being said, I don’t think this is THE winner. The big majority won’t understand the meaning behind it and if I just listen to the song without focussing on the lyrics, it gets too repetitive for me (which annoys me, sorry ?). Overall, I’dd give it a 8/10, but take away the understanding of French and it becomes a 6.5/10.

I loved that song and think it should have won! In comparison to Voila, Tous les deux is also better imo.
Well, four years ago we had another winner that sang in a language that only a few in Europe understand. And there are many that understand French. Also it is about the musicality of the language, which is unbeatable when sung like Barbara does

I’m not saying a non-english language song can’t do well, I’m just stating that, in my opinion, the strength of this song lies with the meaning of the lyrics and not the musical aspect of the language. Sobral’s song was indeed super impactful on all levels, regardless of language and lyrics. I just don’t see that aspect mirrored in Voila like you do. But nonetheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if France end up on the (high) left side of the scoreboard in May. It just hasn’t got what I look for in a winning song.

It would be a scandal if juries ignore France this year. Yes, i know there will be 30+ new songs to consider as the competition but i honestly think France has the whole package this year. Well if it is old- fashioned as you say then why would it win? When has an old-fashioned song won yet alone reached top 10? Winners bring something new and original to the contest, not sounding like songs that could have won in a previous decade.

I loved the staging of Voila and agree with Duncan Laurence’s comments in staging at ESC.
I agree, I don’t speak French that well, but what I picked up, it seemed like a Barbara love-in. Her staging and camerawork was miles better than the other contestants and the whole scores straight after the songs I’ve already commented on below. I really hate the feeling that you are being manipulated….
TV is a form of manipulated entertainment anyhow; I won’t bore people with the technical details. But perhaps there could have been more equality in the staging for the acts; this I agree with. The jury, however, were completely transparent- nothing wrong there perhaps?

Of course, everything is manipulated to a lesser or greater extent – perhaps my main gripe is that this manipulation was not done more effectively as it really spoils my enjoyment when it is in plain view. Very curious about the reaction of the eurovision fans. Cause I haven’t forgot the reactions about Hooverphonic’s Release me. If some of you called that song “boring”, than what do you call this? This is a complete other level of how boring a song can be.
This is far more expressive and emotional than Release Me, perhaps partly due to the performer, and undoubtedly lands far more impact on the listener.

This song has absolutely nothing to do with Release Me. Her energy on stage is electrifying and the quality of the song is miles away
I respect your opinion. I’m a big Hooverphonic fan, and even I didn’t liked the song, still don’t, actually. But a lot of people said that Release me was boring, so I wanted to know how the same people think about this. That’s all. Besides I forgot another great song. Tous les deux de Seemone. Wich I think is way better than Voilà, but that’s personal.
I didn’t like it that much previously but the performance is astonishing. It kind of reminds of Patricia Kaas’ “Et s’il fallait le faire” with a modern staging. It has the French identity. The staging is similar to Arcade’s one but that isn’t bad at all as I don’t think the general public remembers it and it has some more twists. It even looks Eurovision ready.
So while my fav was Poney X. I think France should be proud. They might get a place around the top 10-15.
I am really wondering how did Philippine finished 8th or lower in televote? Isn’t she supposedly the most famous singer there? And isn’t the song supposedly popular on streaming services? Even if we count that many others have even stronger performances, the logic in almost any other NF would say that she’d still reach top five. There have been many popular singers with worse performances and weaker songs who got good scores for fame alone.
Honestly, Philippine is not that well known in France. She made a duet that worked well with Gavin James, but as a singer, alone, she is not very identified. Because sorry to say it, but singers like Philippine, there are numerous in France. And I would say that overall this year all the contestants were about the same level of notoriety. There are one or two who made The voice, but this is the same, former contestants of The Voice … There are numerous.
I based this opinion only on statements of some French people who said that she is the most famous singer at the time and that betting odds put her second next to Barbara.
No, she’s not the most famous singer. If you ask random people in France, they will not know who she is. Her songs have been added to Spotify playlists which means higher number of streams but that doesn’t make her famous.
Her song was tipped as favourite because it was modern and catchy. However, the audience of France 2 is not very young, hence she probably missed the popular vote, just like Pony X did not win the televoting (they would have won it if the show had a higher demo in viewership).
You think that Pony X would win the televote with the younger audiences? For me, it sounds like a 90s club song. If modernity was the pre-requisite, I think that LMK would have it in a bag. Still, the jury had to save her, indicating that traditional / vintage / comeback sounds are now more appreciated in France. At least among the demographics who watched the show.

In a way, it reminds me of the 1983’s French selection. It was Guy Bonnet who won and went to represent France with “Vivre”, a great “typically French” song (and will finish 8 in Munich). But during the French selection, the audience had voted enormously for La Compagnie Creole with “Vive le douanier Rousseau”. That didn’t stop this song from working outside Eurovision, and la Compagnie Créole even sang in front of Obama.
Yes, I didn’t like the way they treated Amui. Music should always be for the people, not 10 people who think they know better than the public.

I also happen to be an idiot who has written lots of unsuccessful music, haha. Amui were my 5th favourites last night. “Maeva” was a lot of fun and got me dancing, so it wasn’t all just about the music. 🙂

The classiest song won. Great voice and typically French. But this is not today’s music. Only LMK was in touch with today’s pop. I was sadly disappointed by the general level. Pony X and 21 juin le duo even made me cringe. Kiddie music. Okay for 8-12 year olds. Duncan Laurence, as an advocate of Music First, must have wondered what he was doing there. With his vote for LMK, he showed that there was at least one jury member who was not out of touch with today’s musical reality.
Why does it need to be ‘today’s music’ though? Timeless music exists. (Amar Pelos dois) The total package won. Great timeless song with phenomenal staging. It was the act that stands the most chance to give France a good end result in May.
In order to stay relevant, ESC should go along with the times. We don’t want ESC’s popularity restricted to old age homes and care centres, do we? That being said, I think Barbara was classy, the song was quintessentially French and her voice is great. I only think – as Duncan said – that for Eurovision’s sake, LMK would have been a better choice, as it is more appealing to young listeners and more representative of today’s pop.
But why exactly is Eurovision supposed to be a pop contest? It’s not an event for young listeners, it’s for everyone, and everyone, regardless of their age and taste in genres, can vote. Neither 2016 nor 2017 saw a “modern” song win, there’s much more to music than just production. Eurovision would be extremely boring if every single song sent there was a perfectly slick, pop song, and in the end, it’s supposedly all about inclusivity and showcasing themes rooted in various cultures.
The “times” don’t constitute what music stays relevant, it’s the people, and here people voted for “Voila”.

A song which is contemporary doesn’t guarantee succes at all. You can perfectly stand out and do well with a timeless quality and meaningful song such as Voila, in a sea of modern/contemporary (possibly generic) 2021 chart-friendly pop songs…it’s about the message and the full package, not whether it fits in the radio charts.

I stopped watching the show after she performed… I mean it is a gorgeous song but damn, the way juries dramatically hyped it before the rest had even presented their songs? Crying even and saying she was the winner? The way the staging was the only one with a bit of effort, screaming “National Final Performance”? I found it slightly unfair. I don’t even know why they did the entire show thing if they already knew who was going to win…

It wasn’t 50/50 system to be honest. There was a clear favouring to the jury votes. Giving televoting points according to rank not to the real public results (as a percentage of votes) is so wrong. There was hardly no way to pass the leader even if you won televoting with a huge margin (because you will receive only 100 points). I hope everyone understands what I’m talking about but if not you can check the Destination Eurovision system which in fact was 50/50. Have a good day!

The decision for the jury to rank the songs straight afterwards was also really bad. Practically everybody got a 6 other than Barbara who got a 9. It was a bit like they were saying to the viewers – everyone is trash other than Barbara so make sure you vote for her.

It was THE thing to improve from DE and they did it, and I’m happy with it. It will allow to avoid some situations à la Bilal. France 2’s audience is old and don’t know how to vote, we already knew that but we got the ultimate proof yesterday. Barbara is hardly urban and modern though is she? Indeed I would say she will be incredibly popular with an older, rather than younger, audience. This is my big worry with juries, you end up with the “worthy” winner – that the general public don’t really like.
I agree that this is unfair, even if yesterday it didn’t change anything because both juries and televote agreed. But I have to say that France 2´s voters have really weird taste, and if it weren’t for the juries, the modern songs would have all been out… so I have mixed feelings about it.

As opposed to 2020 this actually feels French and not Disney… more similar to Switzerlands very French song last year.
I’m also gettin eurovision 60s vibes… in a good way. This is the type of songs that made France the eurovision champion with 3 wins in 5 years back in the days, and French was the language that almost half of the countries sang in (France, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxemburg and Monaco were pretty much half of all the songs).
The question is if a good quality french chanson stands a chance also in todays eurovision. Remains to be seen.

It is an objective fact that the jury’s results do not look good in the context of the televote. I genuinely don’t want to fall out with you, I value your contributions on this website and I am genuinely sorry if my words have caused you hurt. They were caused by own hurt, but that is still not an excuse so I hope we can move on in a positive way and enjoys lots more interaction over the coming Eurovision season!
FWIW, you’re both clearly passionate Eurovision fans and more similar in the way you engage each other than you both seem to think. It’s not the first or second time you two have fiery back-and-forths here, hence my comment to take a step back or get a room/married! Don’t spend any more time worrying about it.

It’s very classy and very French, which is always a plus. But I don’t see a winner here yet, as may eurofans are claiming already. I guess we are all hungry for new eurovision songs, but it’s just the third entry. Too soon to claim victory.
