Melodifestivalen 2021: Paul Rey “The Missing Piece”

Paul Rey will sing “The Missing Piece” in the first semi-final of Melodifestivalen 2021. This year marks Paul’s second appearance at the Swedish selection show, following his debut in 2020. With “Talking In My Sleep”, Paul made it through to the second chance round — Andra Chansen — where he narrowly defeated Malou Pritz and secured a spot in the final. Eventually, Paul finished the competition in sixth place.

Paul Rey co-wrote “The Missing Piece” alongside Laurell Barker and Frederik Sonefors. Last year, Paul collaborated with Laurell when the duo penned “Surface” for Ellen Benediktson and Simon Peyron. You’ll remember that Laurell became the first ever female songwriter to simultaneously have three entries in the Eurovision grand final — “She Got Me”, “Sister” and “Bigger Than Us” — in 2019.

Meanwhile, Frederik has collaborated with two Eurovision winners. He co-wrote “Fire In The Rain” for 2015 Melfest and Eurovision champion Måns Zelmerlöw, and also wrote “Rainmaker” — the official anthem of Eurovision 2014 — for Danish winner Emmelie de Forest.

What do the “The Missing Piece” lyrics mean?

“The Missing Piece” is an easy-listening modern pop ballad, akin to the folk-pop stylings of Ed Sheeran. “The song is like a journey,” Paul says. “It starts intimately and steadily grows. I hope everyone will want to join me for this beautiful journey.”

The track is about letting your guard down for a person you feel you can put your full trust and faith in. Paul opens the track sounding lost and empty as he compares himself to a “puzzle no one could understand”, waiting to find “the missing piece”. But now he’s calm and at peace with whatever the future brings, as he sings “ain’t no guarantees but if I’m here with you and if you’re here with me then I got all I need”.

“The Missing Piece” lyrics — Paul Rey (Melfest 2021)

I’ve been a puzzle
No one could understand
But that ain’t a struggle
Now my heart is in your hands

I’m done with being the strongest
Baby it’s the smallest
Things you do that make that picture so big
I fall for you the hardest
Cause you are the perfect fit

So stay with me
And we’ll take the road to where it leads
Ain’t no guarantees but if
I’m here with you and if you’re here with me
Then I got
All I need

I’ll break and bleed
Yeah this life can put me on my knees
But that don’t matter to me cause if
I’m here with you and if you’re here with me
Then I got
Oh I got
The missing piece

Oooooh

I’ve been a jigsaw
No one could take me down
But babe you’re a big shot
Got me all figured out

I’m done with being the strongest
Baby it’s the smallest
Things you do that make that picture so big
I fall for you the hardest
Cause you are the perfect fit

So stay with me
And we’ll take the road to where it leads
Ain’t no guarantees but if
I’m here with you and if you’re here with me
Then I got
All I need

I’ll break and bleed
Yeah this life can put me on my knees
But that don’t matter to me cause if
I’m here with you and if you’re here with me
Then I got
Oh I got
The missing piece

Oooooh
The missing piece
Ooooh

Yeah if I’m here with you and if you’re here with me…
Then I got
Oh I got
The missing piece

You lift me up, up, off the ground
Oooh
My heart was lost but now it’s found
No I won’t let you down

So stay with me
And we’ll take the road to where it leads
Ain’t no guarantees but if
I’m here with you and if you’re here with me
Then I got
Oh I got
The missing piece

The lyrics sound as if they’re written by somebody just becoming familiar with the English language so I’m not going to be too harsh. To put it kindly, they’re not good. 😉
