Spain‘s anticipated song-selection gala is taking shape as new details arise. The two songs Blas Cantó will compete with at the Eurovision gala will be released on 10 February. On the same date, the public voting period will also begin.

The news was revealed by a casual post by broadcaster RTVE. Posted after midnight and in the form of an advertisement on their website, RTVE announced that Spain’s voting will start on February 10th.

Blas Cantó has also confirmed that both competing songs will be released on the same date.

In late January, RTVE confirmed the rumours about a Eurovision gala and three days later, Spain’s HoD revealed that everyone, and from everywhere, can vote.

Destino Eurovision: Spain’s song selection gala for Eurovision 2021

Another detail has come out of the promo video. Spain’s Eurovision gala will be named Destino Eurovision. If it sounds familiar to you, that’s probably because the name is the same previously used for pre-selections in 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2013.

And while the voting is due to start on February 10, the broadcaster is yet to confirm the date of the national final itself.

What songs will Blas Cantó sing at Destino Eurovision?

Viewers will have a simple choice, picking their favourite of just two songs that Blas Cantó will present at Destino Eurovision.

Both songs, as Blas Cantó reaffirmed to RTVE, are distinct from each other. One song is very catchy, while the other competing piece is full of both sensitivity and power.

Blas said,  “I think any of both songs will do well in Eurovision. I love both songs and both show my duality as an artist: strength and sensitivity. Of course, I will defend the song the audience decides.”

Blas also shared that, among the two participating songs, there were eight more potential pieces. Some songs were cut because of their lack of competitiveness, while others sounded too radio-friendly. As Blas explained, “We chose two because these two gather everything we are expecting from me in the contest. But also, for their production and staging designs.”

Spain’s song-selection Gala: what we know so far

Rather than RTVE making one big announcement about Spain’s Eurovision gala for 2021, details have been released from different sources in dribs and drabs. But this is everything we know so far.

  • National final show’s name: Destino Eurovision 2021
  • Online voting process to start on February 10th
  • International audiences can vote in Spain’s selection
  • Both participating songs will be released on February 10th
  • The audience vote will solely decide the winning song – there will be no jury vote
  • Spain is focusing on three different staging plans: the Destino Eurovision gala show, backup staging if Eurovision is remote-produced, and the staging if Eurovision goes ahead in at Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam. Marvin Dietmann (Austria ESC 2014 stage director) is Spain’s stage director for Rotterdam 2021.
  • Date of the gala and its rules: TBA

Are you excited that the voting is set to start soon? When do you think the gala should take place? And do you agree with the communication system of RTVE? Let us know in the comment section below!

If “Universo” is anything to go by, I am not holding out much hope. I don’t like his voice, the same can be said about Eden of Israel

Many Spaniards don’t think Blas will do a great job in Eurovision. I mean, given the results of Manel Navarro, Alfred & Amaia and Miki, sending another generic teen pop singer is foolish. If “Universo” ranked low in the betting odds, choosing him again is a waste.

Eurodrama’s coming! 😀 but that’s part of Eurovision season, right? I think this year will be better than last year for Blas, though. He learnt the leason: no experiments; stick to what you do best. Good luck!

Well technically the “jury”/broadcaster already narrowed it down to two songs. But yeah I’m excited to see what Blas brings to the table.

I mean, it’s not like that in a National Final the public get to choose between 537 “applications” 😀
