Frida Green Silence Melodifestivalen 2021

Nothing stops Mello! Last weekend, Sweden’s Melodifestivalen 2021 kicked off with a bang. And now, seven more acts will compete for a spot in the Melfest final for a chance to win the Swedish Eurovision ticket. Amongst the semi-final two contenders is Melfest debutant Frida Green with her track “The Silence”.

Melodifestivalen 2021: Frida Green — “The Silence”

Frida Green will perform “The Silence” fourth during the second semi-final of Melodifestivalen 2021. The 28-year-old singer is making her Melfest debut this year, but she’s no stranger to competition. In 2018, she reached the final of Talang — the Swedish version of Got Talent. She’s also very well known in the Southern Swedish region of Österlen for her performances at local events like funerals and baptisms.

Frida might be a fresh face at Melfest, but she’s in good company. “The Silence” features the songwriting talents of Melfest veterans David Lindgren Zacharias, Bobby Ljunggren, Joy Deb, and Melfest fan favourite, “Kingdom Come” singer Anna Bergendahl. Bobby Ljunggren has penned a whopping 55 entries and five Melfest winners, including Carola’s “Invincible” and Charlotte Perrelli’s “Hero”. Meanwhile, Joy Deb has a Eurovision victory under his belt — he’s one of the songwriters behind Måns Zelmerlöw’s 2015 winning track “Heroes”. As well, this marks the first time Anna Bergendahl will take part at Melfest as a songwriter only.

What do the “The Silence” lyrics mean?

Frida Green’s song is a pop track with country elements with hip-hop beats and gospel backing. The track is about finding strength within “The Silence”. In moments of despair, “when you can’t take no more”, hope shines through and guides you like “a whisper in the wind”. It’s about finding the strength within to turn a bad situation into something good, like lemons into lemonade — or “dust make diamonds”.

“The song is like an energy source,” Frida says. “it fills you up, it’s very grand”.

“The Silence” lyrics – Frida Green (Melfest 2021)

I can’t promise I won’t let you down
I can’t say that it’ll all be fine

But little by little, time will work its magic
And when the light shines through,
it shines just for you

In the silence
There’s a guidance
When you can’t take no more
A whisper in the wind – it’s calling

In the silence
Dust make diamonds
When you can’t take no more
A whisper in the wind – it’s calling now
A whisper in the wind – it’s calling

And this feeling that you’re never good enough
Won’t go away if you give up

But little by little, life will work its magic
And when the clouds finally part,
they part just for you

In the silence
There’s a guidance
When you can’t take no more
A whisper in the wind – it’s calling

In the silence
Dust make diamonds
When you can’t take no more
A whisper in the wind – it’s calling

Just when you let it go
That’s when you know what it was worth to you
Just when you let it go,
only then
So, don’t let it go

In the silence
There’s a guidance
When you can’t take no more
A whisper in the wind – it’s calling

In the silence
Dust make diamonds
When you can’t take no more
A whisper in the wind – it’s calling now

A whisper in the wind – it’s calling
now

It’s a rejected song from Anna Bergendahl’s last EP

It’s funny how in the past, my own lyrics were criticised for being all grammatically awkward, contradictory and unfocused. Then I read something like “The Silence” and think: If Anna Bergendahl can write lyrics like that, then so can I. Critics are sometimes annoying for no reason.
