Dora 2021 Nina Kraljic Bernarda Bruno Albina Damir Kedzo

She was the fan favourite to win Dora 2021 with her ethno-ballad “Rijeka”. But 13 February, Eurovision 2016 singer Nina Kraljić lost out to the eventual televote and jury winner Albina and “Tick-Tock”.

Ursula Tolj responds to Nina Kraljić’s Dora 2021 claims

During the live TV broadcast, the singer seemed disinterested as she was seen sipping wine and staring at her phone during the points reveal. And after the show, the “Lighthouse” hitmaker made a series of sharp comments on her Facebook page.

Kraljić claimed that her fans encountered televote irregularities during the show, which supposedly prevented Nina from winning Dora. On top of that, the information has surfaced that her in-ears played “Tick-Tock” for 10 minutes during the final rehearsal, suggesting that the now-selected Eurovision 2021 entry might have been favoured by the organisers from the off.

Croatia’s Head of Delegation and Dora’s editor Ursula Tolj was fast to dismiss the claims, telling portal that:

“We sought an explanation from the telephone operator, and we were told that the requests at the increased volume of calls caused a certain load on the telephone system, but within the framework of normal behaviour. Translated: at certain moments it was not possible to cast a vote, but the blockade was not on a certain line but also on all lines at times of system overload,”

Ursula also noted how Nina Kraljić sent her two private emails concerning the issues:

“As far as I was able to understand, she thinks we let her compete at Dora so that we could then work together against her. She couldn’t explain to me why we would do such a thing, at least I couldn’t understand why Nina Kraljić thought so. And it’s not that I haven’t read those emails carefully. Did Nina complain about something during Dora? Yes, there were some minor issues with her hairstyle and makeup which, however, she doesn’t mention now, and we solved that on the go. Did Nina ever object to me at one point during the competition that I favour Albina or mentioned that I set up the competition, the answer is: No! She also didn’t complain that she was the first to perform, but now I see that she also thinks it has ‘damaged’ her”.

“Albina received 8,297 votes in ten minutes. To illustrate, the runner-up Nina Kraljić received 5,320 votes. Albina received 78 points from the jury and Nina 69. Judge for yourself if we can talk about a close victory, and as far as the winner is concerned, the fact that we all made a good choice is evidenced by the fact that ‘Tick-Tock’ is in trend not just here but in several countries outside Croatia. And I, as the editor of Dora and the head of our Eurovision delegation, am happy about that “.

Dora 2021 full televote results

Head of Delegation denies claims from Bernarda Brunović’s sister

Ursula also found herself facing accusations from Bernarda Brunović’s sister who claimed her sister’s team was on Ursula’s so-called black-list:

‘I am aware, of course, that immense ambition, a strong desire to win and a great ego can lead people straight into the abyss, but I think that even when falling into that abyss, some measure of morality and good taste should be maintained. Instead, in the last few days we have been witnessing the emotional performances of some dissatisfied competitors who have not been able to congratulate the better ones, but, behold, they have the guts to tell huge lies’.

Albina on Nina Kraljić snub after winning Dora 2021

Croatia’s head of delegation probably also referred to when Nina refused to congratulate Albina on her win. Speaking to Slobodna Dalmacija, Albina held no grudges: “I’m not disappointed that Nina didn’t congratulate me, I want to surround myself with positive people as before, that’s the only thing that matters to me. Everyone else congratulated me, she is just one drop in the ocean”.

This isn’t the first time Nina complained about her experience with HRT. Responding to her followers’ comments, Nina reflected on her Eurovision 2016 journey, stating how she”was thrown in as a little sacrificial lamb and forced to bring Croatia back to the final with no money and resources”, while other acts who failed to qualify with a bigger budget, namely Franka, never faced critiques like her.

In the lead up to Dora, Kraljić also discussed her career from the first beginnings via a weekly blog, and most of the content focused on HRT not allowing her artistic freedom at Eurovision. The majority of criticism came for her dress. As an example of that, Nina used an event where a cashier mocked her Eurovision dress in front of the queue, something Nina found very irritating. She also came out as bisexual in another blog. In one of her last posts before leaving social networks, Nina voved never to work with HRT again.

Damir Kedzo’s absence from Dora

Nina isn’t the only one feuding with the broadcaster. Traditionally, the reigning Dora champion gets to open the show with their winning entry. However, the Dora 2020 victor Damir Kedžo was notably absent from the show. Instead, viewers were treated to a postcard-esque report on Opatija, the host city, layered by the studio version of Damir’s “Divlji Vjetre”.

It now appears that his management and the state broadcaster couldn’t reach an agreement. To be more precise, Kedzo wanted to perform his winning song and his latest collaboration with Serbia’s 2017 singer Tijana Bogicevic (read our review here), but instead received the cold shoulder.

“I think that when some reasonable agreement cannot be reached then it is best to stay home sometime in life. So many things, which were ugly to say the least, happened in 2020 in all that collaboration that I simply decided to preserve some of my dignity as a man and a performer. But there is really no bitterness in me”, he emphasized speaking to tportal.

I just do not understand how the superpower of the 90s ended up like this. None of the songs in Dora this year were comparable to Sveta Ljubav, Neka mi Svene or Marija Magdalena. I think HRT should have a think about how to attract top talent into Dora . Maybe match local songwriters with foreign ones. Or approaching Croatian music industry directly, incentivizing in house collaboration. I dont know, just brainstorming.

I don’t think that nothing can ever compare to the 90s. It was different times and different styles. Croatia was in 2000s and especially in 2010s slow to adapt and kept sending boring ballads that were out of touch. I think that now with Tolj as a new head of delegation we have a freah view on eurovision and we will start getting back to being a constant in finals. As for your other point, Albina had a foreign songwriter as well as croatian so I think that also showed the public that Croatia can go in a new direction… Read more »

I thought that Nina’s song was by far the best from the studio cut, but it didn’t quite match it when sung live. Much more effort seemed to be thrown at Albina’s song, even though I personally thought it was the weaker of the two songs.
I also thought that Nina’s vocals were easily as strong as Albina’s, if not stronger.
Anyway, the decision has been made, so let’s move on. Off topic, but does anyone else think of Sweden’s Wiktoria when watching her performance.

Nina’s stage felt empty (don’t know if she is to blame) and the song didn’t grip you as much as the studio version.
Bernarda moved a little strangely on the beats of her song, to the point that it was off-putting.
Albina absolutely deserved the win, considering the whole package.

Have in mind that Bernarda is blind, so she mainly expresses herself through her vocals. 🙂

It’s a complicated situation, while people love straight and easy answers. So, they jump to bandwaggon of #TeamNina or #TeamHRT. Unless we can verify it was or wasn’t staged, it’s definitely up in the air. HRT certainly did give a push to Albina (along with Mia and Tony) over Nina, but some, like Eric and Ella, got even weaker running order numbers. It happens in almost every NF, not only Dora. However, with fair voting process, some defy that odds. Nina almost did too. She came 2nd, not 10th. I get that both her and Bernarda were projected to end-up… Read more »

I don’t care about all the in-house drama. But to be honest, Albina’s song will struggle to qualify. There’s nothing original or outstanding in it, it’s just a silly pop song in English with dire lyrics. It pretends to be cool and ‘current’ but it’s just ordinary. So, bye bye Croatia, I’m afraid you won’t be in the final this year.

Well, for now, Tick Tock is really popular on the Official Eurovision Youtube Channel with over 924K views (probably reach a million by the end of the week), so it’s clearly gaining some degree of popularity early on. It may not be your taste, but let Croatia have this moment.

as someone who finds Tik Tok very basic cringe pop–these are some very Bitter Bettys who need to get over that Albina won fair and square…I can see the appeal in Tik Tok–she looked like a pop star and it looked polished and Croatia hardly sends modern pop songs, so I can see how it all looked fresh…Nina had the best song but here I thought her fashion sense was her worst quality trait, but apparently her ability to accept loss gracefully is

I admit in terms of vocals and song potential Nina is the best option since the first semi is a bloodbath but seeing her stage presentation made me wonder, why does she and or her team behind that lack of creativity? Nothing new just as identical to what she did on “Lighthouse” and it was years years ago, seems she’s trying to win Barbara Dex awards again for worst dress and not Eurovision (sigh). And that’s why Albina deserve this chance to represent her Country.

People need to get over themselves. Nothing worse than a sore loser and stories like these certainly won’t make people vote for them in the future again. Can’t say I blame them. As for the perfomances, Tick Tock wasn’t my absolute favorite before the show (it was my #5), but the performance Albina delivered was just simply amazing and no comparison to other people mentioned in this article, although of course this is a subjective matter.

Oh god, the drama comes mainly from Nina and no one else. About Bernarda: Nice song and voice but why is it so hard to believe that the viewers did not like it? I am not surprised that it is not a song that Croatians would vote for. It\s a song that reminds me of other songs participating in the Swiss national final lol. Nina: she’s a sore loser, sorry! Complaining about everything as if HRT made a deal that she would win. Didn’t she go to Eurovision by being internally selected by HRT? Why did she expect to win… Read more »

Albina’s song and performance were stunning, and Nina’s song, with all due respect, was an experimental crap. I used to like Nina as a younger gay brother, but her being such a bad loser has had a repellent effect on me and I cannot stand her any more. Her styling was far from being stylish – it was disgusting and decadent. Bugger off!

Couple of things to unpack here: Nina’s reaction to the whole thing was completely unprofessional and unwarranted. The most frustrating thing for me was that she keeps going on about freedom of speech and how she’s entitled to her opinion, yet when facing criticism (especially on her now deleted Facebook page) she tells people that if they don’t like something they should just leave and not comment. Her whole demeanour on the evening of Dora was despicable and you could tell her team of dancers were visibly uncomfortable throughout the whole thing. She didn’t learn anything from her past mistakes… Read more »

I didn’t recognize any visible proof in this article. Everything is based on “she said-he said” angle. Don’t get me wrong, I am not defending HRT and if there is any issue here the mess must be cleared and explained. Still, the reason why the jury exist is that you can not relied on technology (ok sometimes it’s reasonable, sometimes beacuse is handle by humans hand and that potentially can be used in wrong way), but Albina won in both cases: by the jury and televotes votes. So, if even we cancled the televoting votes, she is still the winner.… Read more »

Probably, we have to keep in mind the tight budgets of many broadcasters. Just like in Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania, I think record labels with considerable networks and financial and artistic resources play a big role here. Albina is backed by Universal Music which is probably an attractive partner for a venture like the Eurovision Song Contest.
What difference the backing of a big record label makes, we could already witness with The Roop’s comeback this year.

actually that proves Max’s post wrong, that an act backed by a major label does not guarantee the first place.

Also, Nina’s Lighthouse entry was released by Universal. I think Universal Music Serbia has signed many artists in Croatia.

Yes, that’s true, of course. However I think, these kinds of partnerships might be taken into consideration. Another perspective on that is, big publishing labels have been playing a bigger part in many national selections and can have severe influence on who gets to sing what kind of song, has a powerful creative team for a great stage show or the promotion capacities needed to become familiar with the audience before the contest. …and has subsequently more or less potential to win a national final. In 2016, Nina was internally selected with a song (and album) backed by Universal Music… Read more »

My point with The Roop was less their voting numbers, but rather the quality and promotion of their song production and music video which made a far more expensive impression to me than their previous efforts. Their enormous run for vitory last year might have alarmed Warner Music Finland to catch up and invest in the band which seems to be on to something big in Europe.

This is what I thought as well, but seeing what Nina wore on Saturday in Dora, I don’t think it’s the designer’s fault. It seems like the designer only followed Nina’s style. This Dora outfit wasn’t much different than her ESC dress. Big dress with feathers, corset-like features… Besides, her ESC designer worked with Rita Ora, Lizzo, Cardi B…so he was good for them, but not for Nina Kralji??… Interesting.

Nina’s attitude was the biggest disappointment of Dora 2021. Unfortunately this will be remembered forever and there’s no going back. This is why people say to think before you say something, never react with impulse. As known, every single line had issues, and it was due high volume of calls. Totally logical. Even Albina had same issues. Even with calls recieved Albina’s triumph was undeniable – almost half more tele votes than Nina. And honestly – the best song indeed won. I was so disappointed with Nina’s attitude on Saturday night, she basically threw a big temper tantrum and wasn’t kind enough to congratulate Albina, like she’s already represented Croatia in ESC before so why be salty and act careless?

So basically, Nina, Bernarda, Damir and all of us who couldn’t vote are liars and Ursula and HRT did everything right? Lol, NO. 1. Damir Kedzo’s team actually said that HRT rejected *him* even though he still wanted to work with them. 2. Nina Kraljic was rude and obnoxious but she is right about some things. I found it a weird choice to put Rijeka first. It just *is* harder to win when you open the show, and Rijeka was both a fan favourite and first in the betting odds – it deserved at least an advantageous starting position. That’s not to excuse Nina’s behaviour or her rather weak arguments now, but the song deserved better.

I’ve just listened to Rijeka three times on loop again and I still do not understand how the audience did not go for it, it’s *so* good in my opinion. I’m probably blinded at this point.

Not commenting on the validity of the complaints but regardless, Ursula needed to be more diplomatic and careful with her language when dealing with disappointed competitors if she hopes to be a successful HoD. Taking a sarcastic tone and calling entrants liars and not being as good as the winners isn’t exactly encouraging these popular acts to return for future editions.
