Melodifestivalen 2021: Alvaro Estrella “Baila Baila”

This will be the 40-year-old’s third time participating as a lead artist at Melodifestivalen. Back in 2014, he competed with the song “Bedroom” but unfortunately failed get out of his semi-final, finishing sixth. He did however have more luck last year. In 2020, he teamed up alongside DJ, singer and producer Mendez on the fun Latin hit “Vamos Amigos”. The pair reached the final through the second chance round, finishing in 11th place with 40 points. Alvaro is also a prolific Eurovision backing vocalist. Over the years he has provided support to the likes of Eric Saade (2011), Segey Lazarev (2016) and Alexander Rybak (2018).

What do the “Baila Baila” lyrics mean

“Baila Baila” or “Dance Dance” in English, is a reggaetón party song sung mostly in English with a few Spanish lyrics thrown in for good measure. The lyrics are about dancing like devils with your one desire, even when the sun goes down.

You can see it now. In the Ibiza heat with a cool cocktail in hand with beautiful sweaty bodies getting it on to “Baila Baila” on the beach. Who needs central heating when you have Alvaro warming up a cold Annexet studio and bringing the party to Stockholm?

Alvaro elaborates with SVT: “The viewers can expect a scintillating Latino party with warmth and love as the focus, because I want to bring the party home to you, the viewers. The song came to me from the songwriter Linnea Deb, who sent it over. I just said: ‘That’s the one’. It turned out so well, and I’m so stoked for you to hear it”.

Written and composed by: Linnea Deb, Jimmy ”Joker” Thörnfeldt and Anderz Wrethov.

Oh na na na
Oh na na na

You and me don’t stop for the red lights
Hear the cops come it’s all right
We be like devils on the floor
Oh na na na
Oh na na na

Baby you’re my one desire
Let’s set the night on fire
Don’t ever stop – come give me more
Oh na na na
Oh na na na

Ma ma ma ma mamasita
Come here come here sweet bonita
Dame dame tu cosita
Shhh

Viva love forever
You and me together
When the sun goes down we keep on baila baila
Viva love forever
You and me together
When the sun goes down we keep on baila baila

And we can dance away away away
Until the break of day
Away away
Yeah we can dance away
Away away
Oh baila baila

Oh na na na
Oh na na na

Drinks on me until the sundown
Til the morning we don’t shut down
We got everything we need
Oh na na na
Oh na na na

Come here and touch me slowly
Like I’m the one and only
I am with you and you’re with me
Oh na na na
Oh na na na

Ma ma ma ma mamasita
Come here come here sweet bonita
Dame dame tu cosita
Shhh

Viva love forever
You and me together
When the sun goes down we keep on baila baila
Viva love forever
You and me together
When the sun goes down we keep on baila baila

And we can dance away away away
Until the break of day
Away away
Yeah we can dance away
Away away
Oh baila baila

We can dance away
We can dance away

Viva love forever
You and me together
When the sun goes down we keep on baila baila
Viva love forever
You and me together
When the sun goes down we keep on baila baila

And we can dance away away away
Until the break of day
Away away
Yeah we can dance away
Away away
Oh baila baila

As a native Spanish speaker, this is the most cringey experience yo can get. Apart from his poor diction and his swedishly unrealistic take on Latin or Hispanic music, it’s clear that he’s not a fluent Spanish speaker at all when he’s saying things like “give me your little thing” or “mamasita” just like he was singing something that isn’t ridiculous. Please Sweden, don’t.
