Sugar, Eurovision 2021

So far the public only knows the name of the song and some clues about the direction it will take. Now Moldova’s Natalia Gordienko has shared the date when her Eurovision 2021 entry “Sugar” will be released — and she has some big plans ahead.

Natalia — that’s Natalisa if you follow her on Insta — will premiere her music video on March 4, at 6pm (CET). However, she won’t stop there, as a simple YouTube Premiere is not enough for this ambitious artist. With the annual national selection O Melodie Pentru Europa on hiatus, Natalia is planning a big reveal with a red carpet event and presentation, coming to you live from Moscow.

The magic will unfold in the splendid Crave Theatre right in the heart of Moscow. On its website, the theatre bills itself as a “fresh interpretation” of a cabaret theatre that serves “a little French flair in the cultural life of the capital.” Well sugar our croissants and call us happy — it’s the perfect place to hold such an event!

And here’s the best part: we can all join her! Natalia will share the show on YouTube, so be sure to subscribe to her channel. She won’t be alone. Our sources tell us it will be a star-studded affair with several Eurovision alums in attendance. Given the Dream Team’s deep friendships with the likes of Sergey Lazarev and Ani Lorak, we’d like to think they’ll make a turn on the red carpet.

As you may remember, Natalia shared the song title and the cover art of her Eurovision entry 2021 a couple of weeks ago. It will be called “Sugar” and seems to go in a completely different direction than her entry last year “Prison”. Fittingly, she shared a message with her fans on Valentines Day about her song: “Life is short — break the rules, say goodbye quickly, laugh uncontrollably, kiss slowly and love sincerely. Happy Valentine’s Day! And get ready to welcome spring with a lot of SUGAR in your life!”

Natalia Gordienko will deliver a dance song at Eurovision 2021

But what will “Sugar” sound like? No teaser or snippet has been released so far. But we have some clues where this sweet sensation may take us.

As with any sugar rush, Natalia’s will make you bounce. Our girl is leaving the dramatic sounds of “Prison” in the parole office and will take us to the dance floor with her new-found freedom. This has been clear since last September, when she and her Dream Team shared snaps from the studio.

As you can see in the clip above, originally uploaded by creative director and collaborator Ilias Kokotos, composer Dimitris Kontopoulos is bobbing and bouncing — this ain’t no ballad! We’re taking this as a very good sign. Moldova does well when it leans upbeat and quirky, as seen through its best finishes on the scoreboard: SunStroke Project’s “Hey, Mamma!” (third place, 2017) and Zdob si Zdub’s “Boonika bate doba” (sixth place, 2005). Natalia’s devoted fans will remember she’s great with wild and outré, as seen in the sensual number “Loca” from Eurovision 2006.

Are you ready for the sugar rush from Moldova? What are you expecting from “Sugar”? Tell us in the comments below!

If I get what you mean, then it means that The Netherlands also has a lot of “Sugar”. Correct me if I am wrong.

She is so lucky that last year’s show was cancelled, Moldova would have not made it to the final.

I loled when i saw that the event will take place in Moscow instead of Moldova/Chisinau. It’s quite obvious that this is a Russia-driven entry and there are no surprises that the jury will give 12pts to Russia. Kirkorov is so powerful.

I am not sure TRM had a lot to choose here. Sorry for being so delusional. My theory is, they are more like a platform for participating in a globally watched music show. It is just a music project in the end.

I dunno. “My Lucky Day” is one of the few Kirkorov songs I actually enjoyed because it was so out-of-character compared to his other entries, and the staging took Evangelinos’ tendency for the over-the-top and actually used it in service of something comedic, which was a novel and clever idea (I’ll take it over a million men in boxes). “Prison” was shaping up to be just another Kirkorov concoction, so I’m hoping this’ll be a little more enjoyably silly.

It would be nice if it was live-streamed from Chisinau though…I don’t mind the foreign songwriting at all but the debut performance of the song should be in the representing country.

First half of Semi 2 could be a blood bath of poppy bops–Natalia/Hurricane/Stefania are likely competing for the same votes…and Vincent and Benny are also going for that radio-pop audience…and then there’s Dadi…it’ll be interesting…it’s bound to be high energy first half of a semi…it does seem like Estonia going more modern ballad can only help them stand out

As much as i dislike the outdated Dream Team i can’t wait to hear Natalia’s entry… She’s just so likeable and arty, something Victoria is lacking in

that promotional shoot DOES look like katy perry’s candyfornia ! katy’s my favorite singer, so i won’t complain at all if natalia rips a page or two off her pop perfection book.

Off topic but I wish that some of you could understand comments under Eurowizja TVP posts on Facebook. It’s comedy gold. ‘Wakey, wakey. Did you get a good sleep?’, ‘You’re moving [with your preparations] like a fat goat swimming in tar.’ Fans are not happy. March around the corner and not a peep from Poland.

Why am I getting a bad feeling about this? I loved Prison for its class and sophistication. I really don’t like cabaret, please don’t make it a cabaret song.

Hmmm just a thought because Russia is deathly quiet, perhaps they are pulling out and putting all their support behind Moldova? 😮

So because Billie eilish makes dark pop Victoria can’t do that and also Elena tsagrinou can’t make 2010s inspired music because Lady Gaga did that… And now it’s bad that she used sweets in her concept because Katy Perry did that… Show some respect for all the artist’s and stop comparing them with others…. If you don’t like something you don’t have to insult the artist’s… Just don’t vote for it…

Say it OUT LOUD! I don’t know what people have during this period, it’s like they’re just here to hate on everything! Which annoys me so much, because Eurovision should be the place to celebrate and enjoy, not something for spreading hate and insults. Artists have feelings too. These people shouldn’t be called Eurovision fans, because they aren’t for real.

There is a difference between quoting, referencing and taking inspiration from an artist’s work…

Moscow?? Would have preferred if she worked with Moldovan songwriters and producers, and presented the song in Moldova seeing as she is representing MOLDOVA. I feel like Moldova is just used as a puppet for Philip Kirkorov as it’s his easiest option to get to esc and sit in the green room at Eurovision which will boost his ego even further!!!

Remember when San Marino held their national final in the UK with contestants who had never set foot in San Marino. And after they picked the song, they decided to call it an anti-bullying anthem and as part of a PR move, and in order to get a tax break they donated some money to a UK charity (since the production house was UK-based) and not a San Marino one?
