Ermal Meta, Orietta Berti

Although ratings continue to be disappointing — the second live episode collected 7,586,000 viewers and an audience share of 42.1% — Sanremo 2021 moved on to the third night.

The 26 competing artists performed a cover of a song of their choice, not necessarily related to the history of the Italian festival. Almost all the Campioni were accompanied by a guest performer.

Among the artists were many former Sanremo entrants: Michele Bravi, Pinguini Tattici Nucleari, Nesli, The Kolors, Manuel Agnelli, Neffa, Daniele Silvestri, Neri per Caso and Donatella Rettore.

The cover night has become a regular feature of Sanremo over the years, but this year is crucial for the fate of the singers. Just like last year, these special performances — voted on by only the members of the orchestra — will contribute to the final ranking.

The band opened the live show singing “4/3/1943” by Lucio Dalla and “Meraviglioso” by Domenico Modugno, and later sang a medley of their singles “Contatto” and “La cura del tempo”, while the extravagant artist performed his track “Penelope” together with Emma Marrone (ESC 2014) and actress Monica Guerritore.

How will the Sanremo winner be picked?

Voting during the five evenings will occur through different combinations of four methods:

  • Public televoting, carried out via landline, mobile phone, the contest’s official mobile app, and online voting.
  • Press jury voting, expressed by accredited journalists that followed the competition from the Roof Hall at the Ariston Theatre.
  • demoscopic poll, composed by 300 music fans who voted from their homes via an electronic voting system managed by global market research and a consulting firm Ipsos.
  • Orchestra voting, resulting from points assigned by musicians and singers of the Sanremo Music Festival Orchestra.

The four voting systems will have a percentage weight so distributed:

  • First and Second Evening: 100% demoscopic poll
  • Third Evening: 100% orchestra voting
  • Fourth Evening: 100% press jury voting
  • Fifth Evening: 100% public televoting

In the final part of the fifth evening, a new rank indicating the first three acts — determined by the percentage of votes obtained in this evening’s vote and those obtained in previous evenings — will be drawn up.

  • Superfinal: 34% public televoting; 33% press jury voting; 33% demoscopic poll

We shouldn’t sleep on Willie Peyote. His song is catchy, infectious, smart and has content. Jury are going to vote for it tonight for all those reasons.
And it did debut pretty well on Spotify. He could really be in that Superfinal.

Irama and Ermal impressed me but Annalisa has it all: voice, looks, stage presence. I don’t think it’s up on YouTube yet but she posted a clip of the video for Dieci shot in a bus or tram, the movements looked great. Already getting staging ideas for her for Eurovision!

I could see Annalisa being the middle ground between the juries and the televote. So far, it seems less likely that Ermal will do that well with the televote, as well as Irama, not to mention Francesca & Fedez, winning the juries. However, at this stage, anything is possible. These are all quality songs as well.

The studio version of Dieci is a tiny bit more uptempo than what we heard on Tuesday (which was also lovely!). I hope she gets a chance to represent Italy!

I am not sure about what is going to happen, really. In my opinion, Ermal has the most let’s say… Sanremo tailored song? It is winning music from start to finish so, I understand why he is up there with the demoscopica, and the orchestra. The festival also tends to favour both traditional “standard” Italian songs, and respected and experienced artists so … he has options to be in the final TOP3. Still, does it mean he will win? Not necessarily. The televote is normally a total contrast, and it favours contemporary music so, there are still various contestants that… Read more »

Maneskin still gives me Mahmood vibes despite having totally different genres. Mahmood came also like 15th or something in his first night and came top 6 in the 3rd night.

This all happens way too fast for me to have some sort of stable ranking or rating. I haven’t even watched most of the official videos yet. By my impression on the first two nights, I still think that Sanremo offers a lot of genre diversity and quality. Ermal really delivered a great song and I’m not surprised that the jury liked it. Annalisa’s song is equally elegant and lovely. Another classic song which is severely underrated is Orietta’s. That gave me that good old-fashioned operatic vibes. At the same time, modern and frenetic song by Madame was also underrated.… Read more »

Why the ratings are going down? I don’t follow Sanremo so I don’t know, is it because it’s coming later in the year than it normally does? I’m just curious, that’s all!

I’ve seen some people speculate that it’s because they chose a lot of lesser known artists this year and sadly, I think it makes sense.

Several reasons: different time of the year, contemporaneity with football league matches (1st time since several years), missing public in the theatre, etc…

Madame is my favourite this year but she’s definitely not winning so I’m hoping for my second favourite Willie Peyote. I think he’ll get a big boost by the press tonight (he was an early favourite by the press with Colapesce e Dimartino and he’s still getting good reviews after his first performance) but I’m afraid of the televote. I really don’t want Ermal or Annalisa to win this year, their songs are not that special and there are a lot of more interesting songs this year

I hoped that after the third evening the ranking would change in the better. But everything got even worse. My favorites Irama and Francesca/Fedez are 5th and out of Top 10 respectively. It’s really disappointing. Seems like Annalisa and Ermal are cementing two spots in final 3. And it’s all about the last third place. Of course, everything can still change because the press voting and public have huge weight. I think Irama still has good changes to get into Top 3. But for Francesca it’s very important to get high press results, as I think they can do very… Read more »

1st and 2nd night (so all the 26 aristis’ songs) Demoscopic Jury 100%
at the end of the 2nd night there’s the first complete ranking
3rd night Orchestra jury 100% on the cover performance
at the end of the 3rd night there’s the jury ranking first, then it’s summed to the previous one, so a third ranking is out (50% demoscopic 50% orchestra)
4th night Press voting, it’s a separate award .
5th night Audience televoting is added to the previous ranking.
At this point the first three artists will be televoted again.

Well, it’s clearly explained in the article. Four different juries equally weighted which in the end express at the best the Italian musical taste. It’s not a case that since Italy’s comeback in ESC, it has always reached top10 (7th-3rd-6th-5th-2nd) when the winner of Sanremo has participated.

I actually like eight of the top ten so far but I think that is more about me just liking so many of the Sanremo entries this year. I know everything can change but I think Italy are going to end up with three good songs at the end of this.
It’s been a great festival so far!

If Ermal really needs to win Sanremo this year, then I hope he will be all nice, and gracious, and kingly about it, will just pick up that golden lion of his (or whatever they give to winners these days) and will disappear into hirozon for good claiming he’s had enough of Eurovision in his life and that a new generation deserves their shot (a meaningful wink at Irama will be appreciated at this stage). This little ditto of Ermal’s song is all nice, and refined, and classy, and overwhelmingly superior, but honestly it only goes well with a twenty-five… Read more »

The current top 5 would all be in my top 10, but I wish Maneskin, La Rappresentante di Lista and Madame to be doing much better. I’m afraid Fedez has been dragging Francesca down so far (he was better tonight, but his singing is not nearly as good as his rapping) and though the televote will certainly boost them, they’ll need to do well with the press to not risk their qualification to the final round. But nobody needs to panic yet, the press and televote can and will change a lot of things yet. Last year, in the end of… Read more »

This voting system is so confusing, so at this point all I need to know is: does this mean Irama is out? I’ve been listening to his song on repeat since yesterday, I would love to see him in Rotterdam and I’m sure he can bring back the trophy to Italy!

Sabrina

Irama is pretty much alive, the orchestra vote doesn’t have that much weight and he’ll probably do well with the televote. No idea how the press will vote though, they can be very unpredictable.

Ok the last night is purely televote then, and only the superfinal will use again demoscopic and press if I’m not wrong, so it means at this point we have already 50 % of the final ranking already decided.

Fra
Fra

By the way, the article is wrong about the weight distribution of the voting system. Differently from 2020, the 5th night will be 100% televote, making all the 4 ranks equally weighted. Then, only in the final part of the 5th night (when only the top3 will be ranked) the weight will be 33-33-34 as written in the article.

Actually, this ia wrong.
The averages are cumulative.
The first average is between Demoscopic ranking and The Orchestra one. Then what you got is another chart and you do the average bewteen this new ranking and the Press Poll one and so on…

At the end, before the super final, these are the weights for ecco voting panel

* Demoscopic jury: 12.5%
* Orchestra: 12.5%
* Press poll: 25%
* Televoting: 50%

If I remember correctly, that’s the system of some years ago (Carlo Conti’s festivals). This year (like last year) it is basically just the sum of each night, making all the ranks equally weighted. It is a bit of bureaucratese, but that part has not changed since last year when the ranks of all nights where just summed.

Ermal has killed it again, he is so talented, I’m sure he will be among the top 3 of this San Remo, for the others two, I don’t know because the voting system is complex here, so each acts is voted 4 times in 5 nights, demoscopic, orchestra, press, and the last night, it’s demoscopic, press, and televote, ok, but to make the final ranking before the superfinal do each evenings have the same weight ? I mean 25% demoscopic, 25% orchestra, 25% press, 25% demoscopic, press and televote combined?

No, there is a cumulative average

1) You get RANKING 1 fron the average between Demoscopic and Orchestra Voting

2) RANKING 2 is the average between Prrss Poll ranking and RANKING 1

3) The final ranking is the average between RANKING 2 and the public vote

So the panels are weighted this way

Demoscopic: 12.5%
Orchestra: 12.5%
Press: 25%
Televoting: 50%

Fra
Fra

Not really. The average is not cumulative. It’s a bit of bureaucratese but it has not changed from last year. For each night, the rules say: “…the average between the percentage of the current night and the oneS obtained in the previous nights will determine the rank…”. It means that: after Wednesday we have only Demoscopic -> Demoscopic 100% after Thursday (vote of Orchestra) -> the rank is made by Demo 50% + Orchestra 50% after Friday (vote of Press) -> the rank is made by Demo 33% + Orchestra 33% + Press 33% after Saturday (televote) -> the rank… Read more »

Sanremo confuses me so much. Why are they singing covers? How can you rank someone for Eurovision when they’re not even singing their song for Eurovision? If someone had a bad song, they could still rank high if they sang a good cover of a totally random song? Anyways, when’s the sanremo final? Annalisa’s song is a masterpiece and fully deserves to represent Italy at Eurovision.

I also don’t like that in the last two years the cover night contributes to the final ranking. However, in Sanremo they are NOT singing their song for ESC. Sanremo has NEVER been about ESC. It just happens that lately the winner has the opportunity to participate to ESC, if he/she agrees. I’m a huge fan of ESC, but here in Italy no one has ever considered Sanremo as a national final.

If annalisa beats ermal meta and fedez in the press vote, her chances of winning are good. If she loses to both of them, her chances of winning are null as theres no way shes beating either in the televote.

Sanremo is not a national final for Eurovision. Most acts entering Sanremo don’t even take into consideration the possibility of going to ESC which is why they can refuse to take part. The cover night is simply a part of the Sanremo competition.

I hate we already know the results as it gets too predictable and boring for Saturday.
Superfinal will probably be: Ermal and then There’s 3 names for 2 spots. Annalisa, Willie or Irama. Press will decide it tomorrow. Might be a close race.

Don’t sleep on Maneskin, Arisa, Lo stato Sociale, and even Orietta. The press seem to like Colapesce Dimartino, Fulminacci and la Rappresentante di lista, the public will probably go with Francesca Fedez, Ermal, Annalisa, Irama, they are among the most popular seeing the streams, but Gaia, Madame and Maneskin have been well received by the fans, so let’s see.
