She’s the chanteuse who will represent France at Eurovision 2021. But in amongst everything else, Barbara Pravi remains a strong feminist. The French star has routinely celebrated International Women’s Day every year by releasing a dedicated song. This year, Pravi has released the new EP Les prières (Prayers), which contains six musical prayers that evoke independence and gentleness.

Barbara Pravi celebrates International Women’s Day

March 8th is International Women’s Day, a date that is particularly close to Barbara Pravi’s heart. Since 2018, she has dedicated herself to delivering new musical content in honour of women. It is also an opportunity for her to speak out about subjects of prime importance to women, such as domestic violence or the pugnacious stereotypes attributed to the female gender.

In 2020, the “Voilà” singer put her feelings into the single “Chair”. The track mixes spoken word and song to discuss the topic of abortion – a medical procedure to which the singer went through herself at the age of 17.

For 2021, the singer offers a different format. Les prières features six texts in music celebrating nature. Both mystical and intriguing, the melody of these prayers are led either by a piano or exclusively by voices acting as instruments. In “Prière au printemps” (Spring Prayer), for example, we can hear audio of Barbara singing from when she was a child.

Never short of talent, Barbara also devoted herself to designing the cover art.

By creating everything surrounding this EP – from songs to cover art – herself, it was a way for Barbara Pravi to escape and enter a calm and tender state of mind. It also allowed the Eurovision 2021 star time to discover more about her pure and organic musical universe, as she explains on Instagram:

“This year for the International Women’s Rights Day, on March 8, which I carry so much in me, I will not take a big walk surrounded by friendly and conquering figures, I rather propose another facet of what freedom and strength means to me: 6 songs, 6 prayers made alone, 6 texts that have the taste of independence, calm, escape and tenderness. Softness, love, prayers for others, for oneself, for everything that surrounds us, and even for what we don’t see.”

Les prières is based on deep and poetic texts – a pure product of the heritage of French song. It’s a format that does not detract from the usual world of Barbara’s music.

Barbara Pravi’s Eurovision journey continues

In addition to releasing Les prières, Barbara is also continuing her preparations for Eurovision 2021. The “Voilà” singer recently told French radio station RTL more about what her performance at the contest in Rotterdam will look like.

It will be similar to the one we saw during the national selection C’est vous qui décidez. Barbara says she intends to have control over what will be seen on the screen so that the performance is truly authentic to her:

“I won’t disguise anything to make this show! The performance I’m going to give in Rotterdam will be the same as at the selections, only better I hope. I will wear black. I was asked to wear white, I said no. I’ll wear black. Because for me, the colour of “Voilà”, the colour of humility, is black. I want to be me, I won’t be changed.”
