Straight or gay or in between, last year the “Cleopatra” singer proved she’s a queen. And now, Azeri pop superstar Efendi has teased her new song for Eurovision 2021.

The singer released the teaser through the official Eurovision social media accounts, teasing that the full song is coming soon.

Efendi teases Eurovision 2021 song

Azerbaijan have remained somewhat tight-lipped about their plans for Eurovision 2021. But finally, we’ve got a teaser.

The video shows little more than Efendi’s silhouette, statuesque in golden light. She’s wearing her hair in a snatched-back ponytail. Also, we see a brief flash of a frame from the “Cleopatra” music video. Could this be the iconic sequel we’ve been waiting for?

The end of the video then reveals the song will be coming soon. It also flashes the lyrics “Game of Desire”, which may likely feature in the song.

Edit 17:25 GMT: While a previous version of this article stated that the song would also be called “Game of Desire”, this has not been officially confirmed. In 2019, Chingiz’s Eurovision entry was called “Truth”, despite the teaser using the words “She Is A Killer”.

Back in February, Efendi revealed the titles of six songs that had made it onto Azerbaijan’s Eurovision 2021 shortlist. The songs in contention for the Rotterdam ticket were:

  • “Breathing You”
  • “Manifesto”
  • “Mata Hari”
  • “Owe You Pretty”
  • “Ratata”
  • “When I Am Gone”

Efendi at Eurovision 2021

In January 2021, Ictimai TV opened submissions to find Efendi’s song for Rotterdam. The broadcaster received more than 150 songs. From those, a handful of tracks were placed on a shortlist and critiqued by an expert panel.

Ictimai TV originally selected Efendi to represent Azerbaijan at Eurovision 2020. Her song “Cleopatra”, a tribute to the Ancient Egyptian ruler of the same name, made waves with fans. Shortly after the cancellation of the 2020 contest, the Azeri broadcaster confirmed Efendi would return in 2021.

What do you think of the song teaser? Are you excited to hear Efendi’s song? Let us know in the comments below.

Her live vocals aren’t the best, so no doubt she will have use for backtrack.

Where the hell did you hear her live vocals? If you are talking about Cleopatra, she has never sung it live

She actually did, she sang it on the “Eurovision Home Concert”! I don’t think she had much bad vocals, but the backing singers sure were singing most of the main parts of the track. But I don’t know if Lekver was referring to that performance, but it’s the only one she did live.

The teaser looks promising even though it’s too short (that’s what she said). I love Efendi’s voice, and her feminist messages through her songs. I’m pretty sure this song is about Mata Hari, another strong historical female figure. I have heard from an insider that this one is even better than Cleopatra, and it’s definitely going for the trophy, but I’d like to hear the song myself first. BTW, it’s very odd how lately any slightly positive or even neutral comment about Azerbaijan gets downrated immediately on Wiwi. Seems like AMPTV found a good use for the money that they’re… Read more »

Exactly what I were thinking. Efendi’s awesome and deserves to get recognition for her talent and to be supported. This is a music competition and the artists deserve our respect. With the exception of the Lukashenko band, of course. I’ll be rooting for Samira, like she deserves!

Games of desire?

Then I’m pretty sure the song title is Mata Hari. Mata Hari was an exotic dancer and spy.

Who said the title is “Game of desire”? Chingiz’s song was called “Truth” and not “She is a killer”, as was mentioned in his snippet.

There’s no doubt that Efendi has a great production team behind her, for things like music videos and teasers. My concern is for her live performance. Cleopatra became much slower on the occasions she performed it live.

The song is most likely not called Game of Desire, but this is rather a reference to the persona she will be referring to.

Btw, the song will be released on Monday, the 15th of March.

As for the teaser, I can already tell it’s going to be a fantastic entry.

If you’re going to make these kind of assertions, you need to be certain and provide some evidence. This is serious stuff and “I’m pretty sure” doesn’t cut it. It’s unfair and inappropriate.

Good that you call a singer snake who is representing a participating country in a song contest which is actually supposed to be non-political, witout even knowing her. As for Efendi, do you have any proofs? Or let’s say why don’t you also react to Iveta and Srbuk who have literally insulted all the Turkish and Azerbaijani people on their instagram posts?! Why do you always act one-sided and pretend Armenians are the innocent side here? Just look at the comments under Efendi’s teaser… there are already more than 500 dislikes and more and more Armenian comments, insulting either Efendi… Read more »

Don’t give me the whatsboutism. If Iveta and Srbuk insulted Turks and Azeris in general, that’s shameful, but they aren’t participating this year. My problem with the comment (which, in fairness was only something I saw someone else say) was that she sounded like a bloodthirsty warmongerer. It sounded a lot like “the ends justify the means”. Regardless, a country that started a war of conquest shouldn’t be at Eurovision

What a load of nonsense.

You’ve essentially demonstrated that your assertions are baseless and nothing more than hearsay. And your suggestion about countries at Eurovision would leave only Switzerland and San Marino as participants.

Do you realise Eurovision was set up as a space of healing for people to come together and talk about music? Armenia and Azerbaijan sharing a stage is a valuable part of the peaceful cultural exchange that makes Eurovision so unique.

If we were talking about invading or conquering another country’s territory, I would have definitely agreed with you, but if you “conquer” territory that is already internationally considered as part of your territory and you stop illegal occupation, there is absolutely no reason why that country shouldn’t be at Eurovision. Also, Srbuk and Iveta may not participate this year, but that doesn’t justify their behaviour. Plus, if you want to refer to present representatives, I would kindly remind you that Athena also supported an illegally occupied territory that is internationally considered part of another Country. This is basically if Sergey,… Read more »

Call it how you want, but you guys launched an offensive war. The international community considered Nagorno-Karabakh part of Azerbaijan, but it’s not like they supported you going to war to reclaim it. If Ukraine went to war with Russia to take back Crimea, they wouldn’t deserve to participate at Eurovision. You went against what the UN wanted for this dispute. Also, I’m sure that every Russian representative supported annexing Crimea, as did every Azeri representative support the NK annexation, but Efendi went beyond the norm

Thank you for pointing that out. You’re completely correct. And I can say that because I have a Master diploma in European and International Law. I’m afraid that the haters probably don’t know much about geography, history or law.

Marion

Reply to  KRM

I guess the reacting trolls are not happy that the Azeri’s want back a part of their country that was annexed, stolen nearly. Wouldn’t you want your land back? Anyone would. And yes, people taking others’ land can be seen as terrorists and are the same as any other terrorists. It’s a pity Athena’s not participating, but Efendi’s not responsible for that. If these trolls would stop hating on Efendi, they could take the time to appreciate the artist! Or otherwise, please don’t bother with Eurovision if you don’t like music.

Evidently there’s no basis to say it’s real. It’s a shame they can’t focus on the music. Armenia and Azerbaijan being able to share a stage at Eurovision is what makes the Contest so special imo.

we should all remember that the “illegal occupation” you are talking about is actually ethnic armenian lands from before azerbaijan was even a nationality. It wasn’t a country breaking off, it is a country committing cultural genocide infront of the whole world.

Have you heard of international law? According to international law, the illegally established so called state (before establishing it, they ethnically cleansed all Azerbaijanis) is a t-rrorist and unlawful regime. Talysh people live mainly in the southern part of Azerbaijan and Lazgis in the northern part of Azerbaijan, but they never try to ethnically cleanse Azerbaijanis living there and we live together peacefully. That’s how a multicultural state must be. So please, stop saying ethnic Armenians live there as ethnic Azerbaijanis also used to live there and ethnic Armenians living there does not change anything.

Before the occupation, there were 0.1% of the ethnic Armenian population in 7 districts. Continue to tell tales about ethnic Armenian territories. They staged a massacre, staged ethnic cleansing, and then shout about ethnic Armenian lands. Liars.

I am from India. Random foreign rulers conquered land not belonging to India when they took control of India. Now that’s part of India. By ethnicity some of them do belong to a different heritage line , but now all of them are Indians and I wouldn’t want them to break off . If however the people living in that part are being treated as secondary citizens , then they have a right to rebel. But I wouldn’t appreciate any third country , even if they identify with them by heritage to interfere in this.
