Måneskin

On March 6 they won the coveted Sanremo Music Festival shaking the Ariston Theatre with a powerful rock song. And next May 22, Måneskin will represent Italy in the grand final of the Eurovision 2021 with a slightly different version of their gold record hit “Zitti e buoni”.

Reading the original lyrics of their entry, it was clear that some changes for Eurovision needed to be made. In “Zitti e buoni”, in fact, there are a couple of very explicit references and as the Eurovision rules state:

“No lyrics, speeches, gestures of a political or similar nature shall be permitted during the ESC. No swearing or other unacceptable language shall be allowed in the lyrics or in the performances of the songs.”

Måneskin – Zitti e buoni (Eurovision Version)

As reported by the Italian source Eurofestival News, there are in particular four changes that can be recognised compared to the original version. Two changes are to the lyrics, and the other two are cuts in order to make the song fit within Eurovision’s three-minute maximum length.

  • About five seconds have been cut from the introduction;
  • The verse “Vi conviene toccarvi i coglioni” (You’d better touch your nuts) — an expression that in the Italian language refers to a widespread superstitious gesture — has been changed to “Vi conviene non fare più errori” (You better not make any more mistakes);
  • One of the two riffs of the transition to the second verse has been removed (about four seconds);
  • The verse “Non sa di che ca**o parla” (They don’t know what the f**k they’re talking about) has been cleaned up and transformed into “Non sa di che cosa parla” (They don’t know what they’re talking about).

However, no changes have been made to the arrangements of “Zitti e buoni”.

This in spite of the fact that since their victory at the Sanremo Festival hundreds of comments on social platforms asked Måneskin to bring to the Eurovision stage a version that included parts of the orchestral arrangements, in particular the violins. This arrangement was created by the conductor Enrico Melozzi especially for the band’s live performance with the Sanremo orchestra.

What do you think about Måneskin’s clean version of “Zitti e buoni” for Eurovision? Do you like the changes made to the song? Let us know in the comment section below!

The situation in North Macedonia has turned real ugly for Vasil . They are considering withdrawing from the contest and also Vasil will not likely be ever able to represent the country if they do withdraw. I don’t understand why Vasil has to face this backlash? Did he specifically insist on having that artwork included in the music video ? If he didn’t , that’s the only explanation he needs to provide. If he is the reason the specific artwork was included only then should he be made answerable. I don’t like the situation. Not making any comments on the… Read more »

There’s a lot of Macedonian nationalism (do recall the certain name feud I won’t bring up) and I’m guessing the hardcore nationalists are so worked up about a representative not being a 100% full-blooded Macedonian that they’re lashing out. Didn’t say anything about the truckload of foreign help they’ve had in the past, but all of a sudden, here we are. If Cyprus isn’t gonna cave to the Christian lunatics, North Macedonia shouldn’t cave to the far-right nationalists.

It’s more complicated than that. They found out that Vaisl holds dual citizenship (North Macedonia and Bulgaria). To some North Macedonians, holding Bulgarian citizenship is seen as a treacherous act. Bulgaria basically gives citizenship to any Slavic North Macedonian that requests it because they see North Macedonians as being Bulgarians, so giving them citizenship strengthens their cause that North Macedonians = Bulgarians. Balkan nationalistic drama, basically.

Some people are really criticizing a lot of songs with Slovenia, Cyprus and now north Macedonia the only one I’m okay with is Belarus because their song literally was picked because it supported the Belarusian dictator

Except this I’d say Vasil is clearly gay and in a country like North Macedonia most of the people are homophobic. I’m not surprised by this situation. I guess the whole Bulgarian flag thing is just an excuse so both the people and the broadcaster can disqualify him

You clearly didn’t read the whole petition. if you did, you’d have read the part about ITV too. And, no she didn’t just “support Azerbaijan”. She’s a nationalist trash and if Europeans want to dance under her tune then that’s on them.

So we should just embrace her hatred towards Armenians only because it is legal to behead an Armenian in Azerbaijan and get away with it? You make absolutely no sense. Ya’ll were very loud to disqualify the Belarussian ARTISTS because they “supported” Lukashenko’s propaganda, but here’s an ARTIST supporting Aliev’s propaganda, spreading hateful messages against another EBU member country and people and ya’ll go to her defense. Efendi needs to be disqualified and ITV needs to be disqualified because they are in direct breach of EBU rules.

Something good came out of this. I listened to some of their other music . And well it is not glam rock according to me. Glam should be more provocative and over the top. This is more like Italian melodic rock. And fashion. A mix of David Bowie and Armani. So much fashion. This song for eurovision is not their best. They should have sent something more typical and less rough . However I like their music so i would not mind them winning

On a semi-related note, can someone explain on what criteria it’s decided who is competing in the ”main” contest and who falls under ”newcomers”. I’m just asking because some main contest competitors, including the members of Maneskin, Madame and Random, are both younger than some ”newcomers” by several years and have started their careers around the same time or later. Also, none of them have previously competed in Sanremo. I know there must be a catch somewhere, but I don’t know exactly where. Thanks in advance. 🙂

Newcomers are, as the word says, newcomers. They are not widely known and they’re just trying to start their career.

In the Big cathegory you get artists who already have started getting big numbers. Many of the younger artists these year, like Madame and Random, may not be really known to the general public but Amadeus has stated that their success was “certified” by their really big numbers on streaming platforms and they are “big” for the younger audience.

Colin

So, it’s about the scale of their previous success? Because Wikipedia says that Madame has started her career in 2018, while Gaudiano and Folcast have started theirs in 2016. They have to achieve a certain ”status” on platforms or radio? Or, as Jonas has suggested, release a full album? That makes sense in a way. Thanks, both of you. 🙂

The applications for “big” and “newcomers” are separate, you don’t just apply for Sanremo and get put in one of the two categories. Theoretically everyone can apply for the main contest, realistically you need to be famous to be selected (and have a worthy song of course). Whether you are famous enough is decided by the artistic director (Amadeus in the last couple years) together with a team of consultants called “musical commission” and the general rule is that if you are famous enough to go to Sanremo you know it. Some of the criterias they might use are: Album… Read more »

Soldi has “te ne fotti” in the lyrics, so “you don’t care”, the verb is quite vulgar and I’ve seen it translated with a “you don’t give a f**k” in English, but actually, “you don’t give a f**k” would be “non te ne fotte un c***o” in Italian, the verb “fottersene” is not as bad.

“Zitti e buoni” uses the words “c***o” and “c******i” which are actual swearwords.

Doesn’t it mean “I’m getting out of here”?

Je me casse is slang for “I’m leaving” or “I’m out of here” but it’s definitely not swearing

Google translates it as ”I break”. Does it have a double meaning perhaps? If so, maybe they are letting it slide for not being explicit. Italian word ”ca**o” is pretty explicit. Not that I would personally mind in this particular context, but it unequivocally means one thing.

It’s still a vulgar way of speaking. You will never hear anyone in public speech/TV saying that. The right way to say it is “Je m’en vais”

“Je me casse” is more colloquial than vulgar. It is not insulting, blasphemous or anything else. The French music scene is much more vulgar than that. But I agree this is not a really beautiful way of expressing something. I would have prefer “Je me tire” even if it is not really better.

i hope it’s soon. i love eden but set me free is currently my 31st place… israel needs the type of revamp that they gave to made of stars to be able to crack my top 20

I feared the changes to make the song for Eurovision would deteriorate the song. There are differences with the original but they are hardly perceptible. Now this is how you do a revamp!

Good luck Maneskin! You deserve the trophy.

Talk about double standards here. Love this song.

I think that there is a significant difference between using a cuss word to make a point or to feel edgy and using it as a hate speech or towards someone. I personally wouldn’t censor the first type, but I perfectly understand why EBU doesn’t want to dance around that thin edge. These differences are totally minor and it’s still 99% the same song. A great one at that.

I agree that Sanremo and Melfest provide more artistic freedoms when it comes to casual cussing. Maybe EBU should think about allowing a limited number of mild cuss words in future editions. But the key is that the rules would be made bulletproof against hate speeches. That nobody could slip racial / gender / orientation slurs in it and claim it’s an artistic freedom.

This lasha-tumbay technique has been tested back then in 2007 (and I’m all for it).

Sounds as perfect as the original version! If Italy doesn’t finish top 5 this year then Eurovision audience really doesn’t like rock. This is one of the best rock songs in Eurovision history.
